Template:Infobox CVG Star Wars: Battlefront is a third/first-person shooter (interchangeable) video game based around battles featured in the Star Wars movies. It was developed by Pandemic Studios and Lucas Arts, and released on September 20, 2004 for Xbox, PlayStation 2, and PC, the same day as the release of the Star Wars Trilogy DVD set. You can either play Battlefront online with up to 16 players, or offline with up to 2 players.

The game features four main factions from both the Prequel and the Classic trilogies. They are: the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems (Separatists) of the prequel era, and the Rebel Alliance and Galactic Empire of the classic trilogy. However, factions can only play their historical adversary; there can't be any Rebel vs. Separatist fights, for example. Within each unit, five different classes of characters become available. Four of the classes are fairly similar for each faction: a basic infantry soldier (a Super Battle Droid for the Separatists), a heavy weapons trooper with a rocket launcher, a pilot, and a sniper. The fifth class is different for each faction. The Imperials have the Dark Trooper, with a jetpack which enables short but high jumps. The Republic has the jet trooper, with a jetpack, which enables long but low jumps, and an EMP launcher. The Separatists have the droideka, which is very powerful and fast and comes with a personal shield, but can't use vehicles. The Rebels have the Wookiee smuggler, with extra health, time-bombs, a bowcaster, and a grenade launcher.

Jedi heroes are featured in the game: the Rebel Alliance gets Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader wields his lightsaber for the Empire, Mace Windu fights along with the Republic, and Count Dooku is with the Separatists. Jedi characters appear but are not playable; they may only be your allies in battle, under certain circumstances.

There are also non-playable characters (NPCs): Tusken Raiders roam the Dune Sea of Tatooine, Jawas patrol the streets of Mos Eisley, Ewoks inhabit the jungle of the forest moon of Endor, Gungans battle on the Naboo Plain, and Geonosians defend their territory on Geonosis. A later Xbox Live patch added the Tatooine: Jabba's Palace level, in which Gamorrean guards are the indigenous species. They attack both factions.

There is a playable X-Box demo on the Star Wars Trilogy bonus DVD. The demo gameplay is limited to a Battle of Endor level.

Playable vehicles and ships

In addition to the above, various blaster turrets and emplaced guns are available on various maps. These vehicles have many capabilities from the movies - a Republic Gunship can carry up to hold five people, and Rebel Snowspeeders are able to launch a tow cable out of the rear of the vehicle to trip up AT-ATs.

Sequels

The sequel, Star Wars: Battlefront II was released on November 1st, 2005 on the PS2, Xbox, PSP, and PC platforms.

Inconsistencies with Star Wars continuity

There are many major canonical inconsistencies in the Star Wars: Battlefront series.

A trained eye can easily spot dozens of errors and inconsistencies, perhaps even hundreds. Many of the errors are simply game mechanics though.

  • Clone troopers wear an armor colored according with their function. That means no issue with regular troopers, ARC troopers, and clone pilots, but affects the red and green-colored armor. It could be assumed that all jet troopers are sergeants and all snipers are captains, but that would imply an overpopulation of captains in the battles and there is also the fact of all NPC troopers obeying orders given by players regardless of their troop type. In the Star Wars movies, their color is by rank, not class.
  • All vehicles are drivable, which means that Hailfire droids, Homing Spider droids and droid starfighters don't move until another droid jumps inside to pilot it. The canon versions of the abovementioned vehicles have a mind of their own.
  • Imperial dark troopers (phase II appearance) are soldiers with power armor, they give orders and cry when they are hit as stormtroopers do. Also, dark troopers are seen in a battle prior to their development, the Battle of Yavin Base. In the real Star Wars Universe, they are only droids and explode when hit.
  • Snowspeeder tow cable turrets can fire not only cable but blaster bolts as well. However, Wedge's gunner shoots some blaster bolts just before he fires the cable in Episode V, so this may be right.
  • Vehicles like AT-ATs can be boarded instantly from ground level. As shown in Episode VI, they need special loading platforms to be boarded, and even then it is not a matter of moments from boarding to driving.
  • Droidekas are not present during the Battle of Grassy Plains.

Cut Content

There is cut vehicle content that has been left in the game. This includes:

Some reasons behind this may be issues of balance. Most likely, LucasArts did not want Episode III content revealed so early (one example is the Kashyyyk: Docks map (Kachirho) which, at the time, could not be identified).
