Star Wars: Legacy is a comic series written by John Ostrander, pencilled by Jan Duursema, and inked by Dan Parsons, with Brad Anderson also involved. It is set in the Legacy era, approximately 137 ABY with a brief introduction 130 ABY. It is produced by Dark Horse Comics and issue #0 was released June 7th, 2006. Its tagline was: "All new Sith Order! All new Empire! All new Skywalker!"

The guidebook sewed together numerous loose strings and fan favorites from the Expanded Universe, including the descendents of Baron Soontir Fel, Marvel races like the Nagai and Zeltrons, and a half dozen Sith lords named "Darth".

From the Official Site:

In the mid-1990s, Dark Horse blazed new trails into the ancient past of the Star Wars galaxy with their amazing Tales of the Jedi series. Now, their creative talents are journeying into the distant future of the Star Wars Galaxy, with Star Wars: Legacy.

Set more than a century after the events of Return of the Jedi, Legacy is set in a galaxy held in thrall by a resurgent Empire seeking to destroy the last of the Jedi. Even as their power is failing, the Jedi hold onto one final hope: the last remaining heir to the Skywalker legacy.

Fan reaction

Star Wars: Legacy has been met with both excitement and anticipation, and also disappointment. Fans of the new series like its appeal for blending previous stories and themes, and explaining what happened in the 100 years after the Yuuzhan Vong War, but the series will also question what is good and evil, turning the viewer upside down from what they normally expect.

Most disappointment has been a result of seemingly stereotypical characters (such as the revival of the Sith) and plotlines, however most of this was only from previews before the actual release of the series. Cade Skywalker has been the target of most of the criticism, because of his looks, the idea that he may not be able to save the Jedi Order, or that he is a Skywalker. Other arguments stem from the paranoia that Dark Horse appears to be deliberately destroying the Del Rey continuity.

Supporters of the comic point out that most criticism is superficial in nature, based on visual appearances and by those who have not read the comics yet. It is also pointed out that Del Rey destroyed much of the Bantam-era continuity with the New Jedi Order series. The comic's creative team, John Ostrander and Jan Duursema, were responsible for many of the stories in the widely-acclaimed Star Wars: Republic and Jedi comics (which on a whole received more consistently positive reviews than did the New Jedi Order books), and Ostrander read and enjoyed the New Jedi Order series which fans claim he is trying to destroy. Indeed, the impact of the Yuuzhan Vong war plays a much larger role in the Legacy comics than it does in the Legacy of the Force novels (surprising, considering that the latter takes place only ten years after the war, whereas the former takes place more than a century after).

There are several goofs throughout the first issues of the series.

  • Jariah Syn's eyes change from green to brown.
  • During a battle with Sith, Jedi lightsaber colors and their path colors alternate.
  • On page 19 of Star Wars Legacy 7: Broken, Part 6, it was intended that Deliah Blue and Cade spend the night together. However, a coloring mistake in the issue showed Marasiah Fel in place of Deliah. The creators have stated that the mistake will be corrected in the [trade paperback]].
