Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord is an upcoming animated show set during the Imperial Era. It will follow Maul as he rebuilds his criminal empire. The show was announced at Star Wars Celebration Japan, during a panel celebrating the 20th anniversary of Lucasfilm Animation.[1] According to Maul's voice actor Sam Witwer, the series takes place between the events of Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.[2]

Reports of a Maul-focused animated series first emerged in late 2021.[4] On April 18, 2025, at Star Wars Celebration Japan, Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord was officially announced at Lucasfilm Animation's panel.[1] The series is produced by Athena Yvette Portillo, the head writer is Matt Michnovetz[2] and it will star Sam Witwer.[1] According to Witwer, he was first brought in on the series by Dave Filoni about a year prior to the announcement.[2] A trailer was shown to those in attendance at the panel suggested the series, while broadly following the animation style pioneered by Star Wars: The Clone Wars, would have its own flourish.[5]
Footage of Maul was revealed within the twentieth anniversary of Lucasfilm Animation video.
The panel-exclusive trailer revealed the series would entail Maul striking against the criminal underworld as he rebuilds his power, confronting the Inquisitor First Brother and a Vurk Jedi, and taking on a new Twi'lek apprentice,[5] whom he believed would help him in his quest for vengeance after he received a Force vision.[6] The trailer also featured a small crew still serving Maul,[7] including the Mandalorian Rook Kast.[8] Footage of Maul from Shadow Lord was publicly showcased in a tribute video made to celebrate twenty years of Lucasfilm Animation.[9]
