- "Dare to enter the shadows!"
- ―Kenner commercial
The Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire toy line was released by Hasbro, under its Kenner subsidiary name, in 1996, featuring a variety of characters and vehicles from the Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire multimedia project. A separate Micro Machines Shadows Micro Machines was also released.
History[]
This small set of 5 action figures was released alongside the Power of the Force line for one year. They were based on characters from the Shadows of the Empire novel, video game and comic book series. This line included Chewbacca in a Snoova disguise, Princess Leia in Boushh disguise, Dash Rendar, Luke Skywalker in a red Coruscant Guard disguise,[3] and Prince Xizor.
The line included two-pack pairings of classic and original characters, like Xizor with Vader.[4]
The designs were primarily based on concept drawings by Mike Butkus. The swoop bikers of the project were based on concept drawings for the additional CGI scene of Mos Eisley in the Special Edition (that was concurrently in production), where the riders wear conical helmets; according to Tim Hall, Kenner decided to replace the "coneheads" with more menacing armor and helmets.[4]
The images on the packaging of this line changed from the normal red lightsaber glow look of Power of the Force to a purple lightsaber glow. And like the Power of the Force line, these figures were also released on hologram cards. Following the conclusion of the line, some of the figures and vehicles were integrated into the regular line. The collection also included Hasbro's first original vehicle not based on a vintage Kenner mold in the form of the Outrider, Dash Rendar's ship of choice. A second original vehicle, Xizor's Virago, was planned but never produced.
A figure of Guri holding a big weapon was designed but never produced.[4]
