Star Wars: The Old Republic: Knights of the Eternal Throne is the sixth digital expansion for the BioWare MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic. Announced on July 15, 2016, the expansion was released on December 2, 2016, in celebration of the game's five-year anniversary. The story continues on from the previous expansion, Knights of the Fallen Empire, with the Outlander leading the Alliance against the forces of Empress Vaylin. Accompanied by three subscriber rewards, the expansion features two new gameplay features, Galactic Command and Uprisings, allowing the player to participate in new battles and expand their influence across the galaxy.

Plot summary[]

Knights of the Eternal Throne[]

Six to eight months after the Battle of Odessen, the Commander, a veteran of the Galactic War, leads the Alliance in a battle against Empress Vaylin as she begins her conquest of the galaxy. Facing some of the biggest threats they have ever encountered, the Outlander and their Alliance discover new worlds and undertake dangerous undercover missions in their fight to take control of the Eternal Throne.[2]

The War for Iokath[]

The Eternal Alliance, ruled by the Alliance Commander, has overthrown the Eternal Empire by claiming the Eternal Throne and defeating The Immortal Emperor. Now as de-facto ruler of the galaxy, the Commander attempts to claim the world of Iokath in hopes of claiming its superweapons only to uncover that both the Sith Empire and Galactic Republic are also attempting to achieve the same objective. With galactic war brewing on the horizon, a traitorous conspiracy has been revealed that threatens to alter the galaxy yet again.[5]

Crisis on Umbara[]

With the threat of a traitor within the Eternal Alliance after an attempt on the Alliance Commander, tensions have been high as the mole hunt continues. Lana Beniko has revealed to the Commander and Theron Shan of the traitor's location on Umbara trying to accumulate a source of adegan crystals. The trio head to Umbara to apprehend the traitor and uncover their plan.[6]

A Traitor Among the Chiss[]

Theron Shan is the traitor! The Alliance Commander has placed locating Theron at the highest priority, Aristocra Saganu of the Chiss Ascendancy has arrived on Odessen revealing Theron's location on the Chiss world of Copero and reveals his intent on apprehending both Theron and the Chiss traitors who shelter him while Theron attempts to locate a Chiss secret to help him topple the Alliance.[7]

The Nathema Conspiracy[]

The Alliance learns that Theron Shan has joined the Order of Zildrog to aid them in destroying the Alliance completely while receiving encoded transmissions from an unknown source on the Order's movement. Lana and the Commander, learn that Theron is the one sending the Alliance information as well as the Order's objective to awaken Zildrog on Nathema. No time to piece together, Lana and the Commander race to Nathema to stop the Order and deal with Theron Shan for the sake of the galaxy.[8]

Jedi Under Siege[]

The Eternal Alliance has faced a devastating blow after the mission to Nathema which led to the destruction of both the Eternal Fleet and the Gravestone. Now with the threats removed, the galactic war between the Empire and Republic looms on the horizon with the Empire conducting an assault on the Jedi world of Ossus where most of the Jedi, including Jedi Master and Council member Gnost-Dural, fled to after Zakuul's Conquest of the galaxy. The Alliance Commander plays an important role in deciding which faction to support which will ultimately have consequences in the overall conflict.[9]

Gameplay[]

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Knights of the Eternal Throne is the sixth digital expansion for Star Wars: The Old Republic. The expansion raises the level cap from 65 to 70 and introduces two new gameplay functionalities: Galactic Command and Uprisings. In Galactic Command, Level 70 players can grow their influence as they engage in battles with light and dark side enemies, or team up with up to three allies and battle the game's most notorious adversaries in Uprisings, unlocking rewards along the way.[2]

The story of Knights of the Eternal Throne is split into nine chapters, each the subject of a different battle in the Alliance's fight against the Eternal Empire.[2]

Development[]

Knights of the Eternal Throne was announced on July 15, 2016 during Electronic Arts' "Meet the Makers" panel at Celebration Europe. Slated for a release in fall 2016, the expansion was said to be in celebration of The Old Republic's five-year anniversary.[10]

On September 30 and October 6, 2016, two teaser trailers, titled "Chamber"[11] and "Shadow" respectively, were released, announcing a released date of October 7, 2016 for the expansion's upcoming cinematic.[12] The release of the cinematic trailer, titled Betrayed, came with it the release of new information on The Old Republic's official website regarding the upcoming expansion, including story details, information on the expansion's new gameplay functions, and a release date of December 2, 2016.[2]

As with previous expansions, Knights of the Eternal Throne was accompanied by a number of subscriber rewards. Becoming a premium player by October 25, 2016, allowed players to use a game token to recruit bounty hunter Shae Vizla as a companion, and becoming a premium player by November 27, 2016 allowed players to use the Rapid Recon Walker. Those who were premium players for the duration between these dates were entitled to three-days early access to the expansion.[2]
