The rulebook for the first edition of Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game was published by West End Games in October 1987. It contains rules and guidelines for gamemasters and players, character templates, tips on how to design adventures and an example adventure called "Rebel Breakout."

This book, alongside The Star Wars Sourcebook, was later reissued by Fantasy Flight Games as part of Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game 30th Anniversary Edition, being recreated to be an exact replica of the original book.[2]

Continuity[]

The opening crawl presented in the opening pages of the book refers to Palpatine as the "President" of the Galactic Republic. This position would later instead become known as the Supreme Chancellor.

The glossed-page section "No Job is Over This Little Guy's Head" giving in-universe details for the R2 unit implies that the R2 unit, and by extension R2-D2, was newly developed by the time of the Galactic Civil War. However, in The Phantom Menace, released twelve years later but set decades before the original trilogy, R2-D2 not only was present, but also played a major role.

The events of "Rebel Breakout" were later adapted and serialized as a webstrip, Rookies: No Turning Back. The strip was written and illustrated by Pablo Hidalgo and published on Hyperspace: The Official Star Wars Fan Club, a section of the official Star Wars website in 2006.
