Opening crawl[]

Book VI, Part III
YODA'S SECRET WAR
It is a time of renewed hope for the Rebel Alliance as
heroic rebel soldiers strive to overthrow Imperial efforts
throughout the galaxy.

When rebel droid C-3PO gets captured by Scar Squadron, a
team of elite stormtroopers, R2-D2 takes off on a solo
rescue mission, stranding Luke in his X-wing. While
searching for R2-D2, Luke turns to the journal of Ben
Kenobi, which contains a story from the earlier days of
Master Yoda.

After a daring rescue, Yoda feels a calling in the Force
and follows it – to a planet inhabited only by child
warriors. The warriors lead the Jedi Master to a sacred
rock where they meditate to strengthen their "stonepower".
Jealous of Yoda's abilities with the Force, they send him
deep into the heart of the mountain to seek a mysterious
power....

Plot summary[]

Continuing his read of the Jedi text, Luke follows the story of Master Yoda, who climbs the mountain with his exhausted guide. The guide, marveling at Yoda’s tireless pace, explains that the mountain will soon “see him” before giving up and falling off the edge. Yoda continues his ascent alone, pained by the silence. He finds a cave at the top, which closes behind him, and begins to explore.

After days of meditation and travel, Yoda senses a presence and uses his lightsaber to defend against an attack. He discovers a group of adults—the missing parents—who confirm they are trapped but claim they don't want to leave. They say they found peace inside, safe from the unending war outside, and call their children "beasts" for continuing the fight. Yoda scolds them, saying that whatever the children have become is a result of their parents’ abandonment. He leaves, saddened that the children "deserved better teachers."

Yoda delves deeper into the mountain, following the Force in a quest for knowledge. He meets a young Force-sensitive child named Garro who has been exiled for refusing to kill in battle. Yoda asks the child to teach him "stonepower." The text's narrator, a Jedi, reflects on the lesson of humility and how he still struggles with it. He recalls calming two fighting men with the Force before being approached by a mysterious, hooded figure—an older Garro. The man warns the narrator that his power won’t last forever and to "never leave the caves."

The story concludes with the narrator stating that stories must be preserved so the lessons of the Jedi never grow old. Luke, seeing a symbol in the text that resembles a galaxy spiral, sets a new course for the Vagadarr system', believing this may be how he can save R2-D2 and C-3PO. The text then returns to Yoda, who is blindfolded and being taught to use "stonepower." He comes to realize that the stone isn't just alive in the Force—it's alive. Yoda finds the "heart of the mountain" but clarifies that the entire structure isn’t a mountain at all.
