Plot summary[]
The Spike on Shu-Torun was on the verge of exploding. Benthic, consumed by his desire to destroy the planet, declared he was willing to kill everyone to achieve his goal. Luke was confused by R2-D2's actions.
Meanwhile, at the Ancestral Retreat, the rebel team of Leia, Han, Meorti, Tunga, and C-3PO were trapped. Trios' troops were cutting their way in, and their escape route was blocked. Without a word, Tunga made a desperate dash for the ship. Leia told Meorti to call Chewbacca as Tunga, disguised as Leia, broadcast a message to the Empire.
Aboard his Star Destroyer, Kanchar intercepted Tunga's transmission, which claimed the rebels were meeting at the southern rim. Kanchar, thinking it was Leia, ordered all TIE Fighters to pursue. Tunga took off, creating a diversion that drew the fighters away before their ship was destroyed. Chewbacca then arrived in the Millennium Falcon, picked up the rebels, and flew away just as the Spike exploded.
The Partisans had disarmed the remaining stormtroopers and tied up Luke. The Falcon landed, and Han and Leia raced to save him. Leia, unarmed, walked toward Benthic and pleaded with him to listen. Benthic defended his plan, citing Alderaan and Jedha as sisters in pain and the Shu-Torun as complicit. He insisted their deaths would serve as a warning to others who followed the Empire. Leia countered that his actions were no different from Tarkin's and would make them just like the Empire. Her words resonated, and Benthic ordered the Partisans to stand down, freeing Luke and agreeing to follow the Princess' plan. They all boarded the Falcon.
The Disciples of Central Isopter watched in wonder as the explosion from the Spike lit up the sky behind the Falcon. Now pursued by TIE Fighters, Han told Leia and Luke their only chance was an extreme maneuver: flying directly into the collapsing borehole created by the Spike. They made a daring escape, with the TIE Fighters perishing in the core's intense heat. Kanchar was soon informed that Darth Vader had arrived and demanded a report.
Kanchar, unable to put a positive spin on the disaster, admitted his failure. Vader, however, told him they had already obtained what they needed from Shu-Torun. Kanchar vowed to hunt down the rebels, but Vader Force choked him, showing his displeasure.
Back on the Falcon, Benthic asked to be dropped off at Salobea in the Outer Rim. Before leaving, Han hinted they had met before when Benthic was a cloud rider, and asked what changed. Benthic replied, "The whole galaxy." The Falcon then approached the Home One rebel cruiser, and Meorti expressed her relief to be back. The Disciples of Central Isopter found the still-living Tunga on Shu-Torun. The story concludes with Leia telling Han and Luke that Mon Mothma has a new mission for them, with preliminary scans for new rebel bases, including one named Hoth.
