On the rebel ship, the Redemption, Captain Kes Dameron anxiously asks a technician for an update on his wife, Shara. He's told there are no signals from her, but Leia assures him she's alive. Kes shares with Leia that he was going to talk to a holorecording of his son, Poe, even though it's not really him. He says Poe has been a handful since birth, just like his mother. Leia asks how he met Shara.
Kes recounts meeting Shara seven years ago on Galator III. He was at a crestracing race, a dangerous sport where many drivers don't survive. He was particularly taken by a race with a "Death Chute," a bottleneck at the finish line wide enough for only one racer. Two racers were neck-and-neck until one lost their nerve at the last second. He was so impressed that he tracked down the winner, Shara Bey, a new driver without a reputation. When she asked why he picked her, he simply said he liked her name. She asked him to buy her a drink.
In return, Kes asks about Han Solo. Leia tells him a story about Han's hatred of the cold. When their base on a freezing planet had a heater failure, Leia had to evacuate everyone to their ships. Han complained that he didn't want stinking tauntauns on his ship, but when Leia was told by technicians that the heaters couldn't be fixed and they had to leave, Han revealed the Millennium Falcon had a spare part that might work.
Despite his protests, Han and Chewbacca worked to fix the reactor. Leia evacuated the base while they worked, but Han called her a short time later to say the reactor was stabilized. Leia tells Kes that she loves that about Han—despite being a "half-useless" smuggler who complains and jokes, he stayed because he believed in the cause. That, she says, is what makes him inspiring.
A signal from Shara[]
They are interrupted by a technician with news: they have received a signal from Lieutenant Bey using the new code protocols. Kes takes the call.
Aboard the Imperial Star Destroyer, Tarkin's Will, Shara is shown hiding. She's using a hacked astromech to communicate. She tells Kes that since she's stuck on the ship, she plans to get as much valuable intelligence as possible from their systems. She asks to speak to Leia, and tells Kes to "come get me soon."
Continuity[]
In one panel Leia Organa is referred to as a commander rather than her correct rank of general. In another panel Kes Dameron is referred to as a captain rather than sergeant.
