Plot summary[]

A disturbing malfunction[]

Aboard the Home One, the flagship of the Rebel Alliance, Lobot sleeps until his cybernetics suddenly short-circuit, causing him to jolt awake. Simultaneously, Admiral Ackbar is bewildered when the ship's shield batteries activate without his command. The technician on duty assures him that the change originated from his station, but he did not make the input. All eyes turn to the screen as the ship's internal systems initiate a battle alert.

Woken by the alarms, Lando rushes to find Lobot, hoping he can shed some light on the situation. He finds his friend acting erratically, and the ship's crew are struggling to understand why the ship is in the midst of a battle simulation. Lando grabs Lobot, yelling and shaking him, demanding to know if he's responsible. Realizing he has no choice, Lando damages Lobot's technology, and the crew confirms that the ship's systems are returning to normal. Ackbar orders a full investigation, determined to find the person responsible.

Lando transports Lobot to a medical bay where a droid scans him. The droid notes that Lobot experienced blunt-force trauma to his cranium and, as part of its standard assessment, has downloaded activity reports from Lobot's neural implants. The droid explains that the implants are Imperial military technology, originally designed to enhance battle calculations with organic instincts. Over time, these implants override the host's personality, severely limiting their communicative and emotional functions.

When pressed for more information, the medical droid explains that Lobot's implants were replaying old Imperial battles, repeating the actions taken by vessels during those engagements. The droid ominously adds that this is unlikely to happen again because Lobot is dying. It explains that if the implants aren't addressed, they will take over his autonomic nervous-system functions, causing him to stop breathing and his heart to stop beating.

A friend in need[]

Lando wipes the medical droid's memory and takes Lobot to a different location, determined to find him real help. Lando mentally recounts an experience he shared with Lobot on the planet Castell years ago. They are sitting at a table together, having just made a lot of money. Lando suggests that Lobot's implants are useful for calculating odds and winning bets. Lando notes that they made enough to pay back their debt to Papa Toren, but it would be smarter to use it to play high-stakes games with high-level Imperials, specifically mentioning an Imperial Governor named Moff Ssaria. Lando proposes charming the woman and stealing from her, but the plan goes sideways, and Lando and Lobot barely escape in a pod.

In another memory, just before the Imperial implants are applied, Lobot tells Lando to stop his games and find something to believe in besides himself. He urges Lando to use his skills, luck, and charm to do something good.

Back in the present, Lando places a helmet on Lobot's head, explaining that it should keep him from sending out any more signals. He tells a non-communicative Lobot that there's still hope because the "Talky droid" can help. Lando confesses that he can't ask the rebels for help since he sold the droid to Jabba the Hutt to pay off a debt.

Later, as Lando is being praised for his recent success on Coruscant, he finds C-3PO in the hangar bay. He asks the droid where Leia is, and C-3PO tells him she's in Bay 18 with a group of pilots.

Lando interrupts Leia's meeting, announcing that he needs to take the Millennium Falcon out for a bit but will be back soon. When asked why, Lando says he needs to help an old friend and points out that he doesn't need permission to use his own ship. Leia corrects him, stating that the Falcon is Han Solo's ship and an Alliance military asset. After a moment of consideration, Leia says she trusts him and gives him permission.

On the Falcon, Lando expresses his regret at having to deceive Leia.

Meanwhile, on Tatooine, Jabba the Hutt is furious at the "Talky droid," claiming it mistranslated a negotiation with the Black Sun, causing him to pay double what he should have. The droid is thrown into a dark interrogation room with other droids that have displeased Jabba. Jabba has ordered a torture session followed by a full memory wipe and reprogram.
