Star Wars 42 is the forty-second issue of the 2020 canon comic book series Star Wars. The issue was written by Charles Soule, illustrated by Steven Cummings, Wayne Faucher, and Rachelle Rosenberg, and published by Marvel Comics on January 10, 2024.

SITH RISING! LUKE SKYWALKER knows his destiny is leading him toward a confrontation with DARTH VADER. But Vader is a Dark Lord of THE SITH, and Luke is barely even a JEDI. To have any chance at survival, he must find a way to train himself in the battle techniques he will soon face. He must find…ANOTHER SITH!

Opening crawl[]

THE SITH AND THE SKYWALKER 
Before being pulled into the fight against
the evil scourge, Luke Skywalker was
continuing his Jedi training, seeking out
the secrets of the kyber crystals on the
planet Christophsis.

There, he met a young Fallanassi named
Gretta, who helped him find some of the
answers he needed.

But now Luke is ready to continue his
journey, and he'll need his new friend's help
once more….

Plot summary[]

The Fallanassi Gretta sits listening to music and creating art when she catches a silhouette in a reflection. She grabs her blaster pistol and fires at the intruder, only to find it is the Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker. The Jedi instinctively catches the bolt with the Force and causes it to fizzle out before it can hit him. The boy explains to Gretta that he had been searching for her and how his astromech droid R2-D2 helped him do so. He shows her the red kyber crystal he received from Dr. Cuata, which he previously had tried to heal to no avail. Gretta reiterates that her people have lost the knowledge of healing and is unlikely to be able to assist.

Gretta's auntie Feez, a fellow Fallanassi with only a small amount of force ability, enters to explain to Luke more about healing kyber crystals. She explains to him that the process requires extreme empathy for the pain poured into the crystal during its bleeding, requiring one to deeply understand that pain. This creates significant risk, as the individual will feel as though they are actually living the events which created the anguish and may forget themselves in the pain. With this knowledge, Luke prepares to leave.

Once the Jedi is out of the home, Feez and Gretta discuss the obsession for the Force one must have in order to walk the path of a Jedi and debate whether or not they should help Luke with the healing process.

Deciding to help Luke, Feez and Gretta set up a ritual with candles and incense, placing the crystal upon Luke's forehead. They tell Luke that the most support they can give is, if Luke can remember their faces or voices, to call for him, but he would need to follow them himself.

Within the crystal, Luke falls into the court of the Sith Gol, who tells Luke he is unwelcome. Luke ignites his lightsaber, only to find the numerous Sith in the crowd are armed as well. He attempts to Force push them back, but they retaliate with their own telekinesis to incapacitate the young Jedi.

Gol throws Luke into a prison cell and comments how he is unlike the Jedi he has seen in the past. One such Jedi, Gol comments, he forced to be his jester before the Jedi committed suicide. Luke attempts to convince the vision of the Sith to accept his help, only for Gol to retaliate by having his guards assault the Jedi.

Back in reality, Gretta starts to feel concern for Luke, only for Feez to throw aside her concern, feeling that she would be able to know if Luke needed help. She was unaware that Luke was being beaten, and that Gol's goal was to have the Jedi suffer forever.
