Star Wars Adventures: Tales from Vader's Castle 3 is the third issue of the comic book miniseries Star Wars Adventures: Tales from Vader's Castle. The comic was written by Cavan Scott, illustrated by Derek Charm and Corin Howell, and published on October 17, 2018 by IDW Publishing.

Development[]

Back when Star Wars Adventures: Tales from Vader's Castle was first conceived, it was originally going to be set around the same time of the 2015 film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens. As such, this story started as one starring Poe Dameron. However, when plans changed to set it around the same time as the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Dameron was replaced by Han Solo.[4]

Cavan Scott's original intent for the issue was a story featuring the Nightsisters, but given that the story's placement on the timeline made that impossible, he opted to use Han Solo and Chewbacca as protagonists. One of Scott's inspirations for the story was Disney's 2013 hit animated film Frozen, as Scott's daughters loved such film.[5]

Continuity[]

At one point in the issue, Han Solo says that Chewbacca is 192 years old,[6] placing the story around the year 8 BBY.[7] However, the comic also references Solo and Chewbacca's mission to Ushruu from The Mighty Chewbacca in the Forest of Fear!, which featured the Alliance to Restore the Republic. Since the Rebel Alliance was not formed as of 8 BBY, it can be deduced that the "192 years old" line is incorrect.[8]

In responding a fan question about the matter, Lucasfilm Story Group's Matt Martin responded that respect to the Ushruu mission reference, it could be possible that Han and Chewie had more than one mission there, while Han wasn't really being exact about Chewie's age, adding that Han himself doesn't know even his own.[9]

  2. StarWars Cavan Scott on the Ghoulactic Horrors of Tales from the Death Star on StarWars.com (backup link) states that Star Wars Adventures: Tales from Vader's Castle takes place around the time of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the events of which are dated to 1 BBY by Star Wars: Timelines. As Star Wars Adventures: Return to Vader's Castle immediately follows Tales, both series must take place around that year.
  3. Star Wars Adventures: Tales from Vader's Castle 3 takes place after the Mission to Ushruu, which appears in The Mighty Chewbacca in the Forest of Fear!, but before the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, as Han Solo and Chewbacca are visibly older then. Star Wars: Timelines dates The Mighty Chewbacca in the Forest of Fear! to 1 BBY, and as only the events of Star War: Episode IV A New Hope take place during 0 BBY, Star Wars Adventures: Tales from Vader's Castle 3 must take place in 1 BBY.

And B. do you really think Han is being exact about Chewie's age there? Han doesn't even know his own age, you think he's doing the math for Chewie?" (backup link)
