The Stardream was a passenger liner that was active during the Cold War between the Galactic Republic and the reconstituted Sith Empire. In 3639 BBY, a routine journey from Ord Mantell went horribly wrong when one of the passengers' pet risp escaped and began infecting those aboard with the rakghoul plague. In a matter of 15 days, most of the passengers and crew were infected, and the ship's infected captain Magnus had locked himself inside the bridge, believing the crew was mutinying against him.

Diverted from its normal course, the Stardream crashed on the Outer Rim world of Tatooine. The ship broke up entering the atmosphere, scattering dozens of pieces of wreckage and escape pods across the planet, before crashing in the northern Dune Sea. The surviving passengers and crew transformed completely into rakghouls, and the infected who had launched the pods spread the plague across the planet, forcing both the Empire and the Republic to declare the planet a quarantine zone.

The rakghoul plague spreads from a crash survivor to native Jawas

A passenger liner, the Stardream was active during the Cold War between the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire. By 3639 BBY, the ship was captained by Magnus, and Lieutenant Pursal was in charge of the ship's flight logs.[1]

In 3639 BBY, the liner picked up 492 passengers from the war-torn world of Ord Mantell.[1] However, a passenger named Zama Brak—a self-described "privateer extraordinaire"—smuggled a risp hatchling aboard. The risp had been infected with the rakghoul plague on Ord Mantell by the insane Doctor Sannus Lorrick, the Tionese scientist who had released the virus on Kaon to gain revenge on the Tion Hegemony. The rist bit Brak not long after the ship departed Ord Mantell, and began to infect other passengers on Deck 2.[4]

By the fifth day of the voyage, several passengers had fallen ill with what the crew believed was food poisoning. However, by the seventh day the illness had spread across Civilian Decks 1 through 5, and the patients were barely controllable.[1] Captain Magnus, who had recognized the signs of the plague,[5] was infected himself two days later, and became paranoid when the doctors suggested that he rest. He accused the crew of mutiny and locked himself on the bridge, sending the Stardream off-course. By the twelfth day, the ship was lost in hyperspace and the infected passengers had begun to gather near the ship's core. The remaining crew, many of whom were infected already, attempted to stop Magnus and retake control of the ship.[1]

The crew failed, however, as the Stardream crashed-landed on the Outer Rim planet of Tatooine. As the liner broke up over the desert and slammed into the northern end of the Dune Sea, pieces of the wreckage were scattered across the nearby area. Dozens of escape pods were launched, but everyone inside was already infected.[3] Magnus and many other passengers and crew, now completely transformed into rakghouls, survived the crash and haunted the wreckage of the ship, attacking and infecting anyone in the area.[6]

Behind the scenes[]

The Stardream was created for Star Wars: The Old Republic, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game released by BioWare on December 20, 2011. It serves as the focus for the limited time World Event "Rakghoul Pandemic" on Tatooine available to both Imperial and Republic players from April 15 to April 24, 2012.[3] The World Event missions have players dealing with the consequences of the Stardream's crash, and the Daily Area mission "Wreck of the Stardream" involves players searching the wreckage of the liner.[6] While the event has ended ever since, the wreckage is still there, and some Jawas can even be seen investigating it.
