Steven Roberts, better known as Steven Speirs (sometimes using first name Stephen or Steve), was the voice of Captain Roos Tarpals in Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace.


Steven Roberts was born February 22, 1965 in Wales. Beginning his acting career in 1989 with the series We Are Seven, Roberts—now by the name of Speirs—would go on to marry his first wife, Julia, whom gave him two children. In 1996, Speirs appeared in a mini-series and TV movie; he would continue acting in the following years next to stars such as Joseph Fiennes (Martha, Meet Frank, Daniel and Laurence, 1998) or Whoopi Goldberg (A Knight in Camelot, 1998). He also made guest appearances in several TV series.

In 1999, Speirs started his collaboration with Star Wars, acting in Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace as the Gungan Captain Roos Tarpals, who became a counterpart for Jar Jar Binks. He would also act in a TV series about the Scarlet Pimpernel and in the successful film Topsy-Turvy. Speirs continued with small roles in movies and TV series, returning to the science-fiction genre in two chapters of the new Doctor Who series in 2005. The following year, Speirs would act in the features Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and Eragon. In 2010, Speirs divorced his wife Julia and remarried in 2012 to Joanna, with whom he has two children.
