A subspecies,[1] or race,[2] was a taxonomic subdivision of a species.
Genetic diversity[]
Some populations of a single species were considered subspecies because of genetic diversity. The Zabraks, for example, had different genetics on different planets like the Iridonians from Iridonia and the Dathomirians from Peridea and Dathomir.
Physiological adaptations[]
Some populations of a single species were considered subspecies because of different characteristics in different places. The Esral'sa'Niktos, Kadas'sa'Niktos and Kajain'sa'Niktos, for example, were subspecies of the Nikto species because of different colors. Esral'sa'Niktos were gray, Kadas’sa'Niktos were green, and Kajain'sa'Niktos were red. That’s because they adapted in different habitats.
Regional isolation[]
Some populations of a single species were considered as subspecies because of isolation in different places. Many planetary cultural groups of Humans outside of Coruscant, for example, were considered subspecies because of planetary isolation, like the Naboo, the Alderaanians, the Corellians and the Chandrilans.
