History

Forgotten times

"Long ago in forgotten times, when the Sith and Jedi fought for control of the galaxy, weapons there were, of unimaginable power."
Yoda[src]

Superweapons were used in ancient wars between the Jedi and the Sith.[8] Retold in legends, superweapons of the Sith were powered by massive kyber crystals.[1]

Malachor

Kanan Jarrus: "Malachor has always been off-limits to Jedi."
Ezra Bridger: "Why?"
Kanan Jarrus: "Old legends. Stories told to us as younglings in the temple."
Ahsoka Tano: "There's always a bit of truth in legends."
Kanan Jarrus, Ezra Bridger, and Ahsoka Tano discuss Malachor[src]
Momin city destruction

Momin's superweapon was unleashed upon a city centuries before the time of the Galactic Empire.

One such weapon existed on the Sith planet Malachor, the site of an ancient battle.[9]

Momin

"I designed a great engine. It was a weapon, of course, powerful enough to burn the city to ash."
―Momin, to Darth Vader[src]

The Sith Lord Momin also constructed a superweapon, one with the ability to raze an entire city. He used this weapon to destroy a city before he and his acolytes were defeated by the Jedi.[5]

Clone Wars

"Finding it is one thing. Finding a way to stop it is another."
Mace Windu, on the superweapon Malevolence[src]

The Subjugator-class heavy cruiser Malevolence used by the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars was considered to be a superweapon,[10] as was the defoliator and the Galactic Republic's electro-proton bomb[11] developed by Sionver Boll.[12]

Age of the Empire

"One of history's tall tales? Maybe."
Rebel Alliance documentation, The Rebel Files[src]

The Galactic Empire created, or was believed to have devised and possibly made, many other types of superweapons:[13]

The Death Stars

"This station is now the ultimate power in the universe! I suggest we use it."
―Conan Antonio Motti[src]

Imperial Admiral Conan Antonio Motti loved technology that created devastating superweapons, specifically the Death Star project, which consisted of a superlaser.[14]

The Arc Pulse Generator

"…the Arc Generator's energy pulse is drawn to the beskar alloy in the Mandalorians' armor, superheating it and instantly vaporizing the target, and all the while, doing no harm to our Imperial stormtroopers."
Tiber Saxon, to Grand Admiral Thrawn[src]

The Arc Pulse Generator, invented by former Imperial Sabine Wren, was classified as a superweapon.[15]

Other projects

"I've been monitoring equipment suppliers and I'm telling you we should be worried."
Colonel Haxen Delto, in a Rebel Alliance report on Imperial activities to General Airen Cracken[src]

The firing of an Onager-class Star Destroyers' weapon

The Galactic Empire developed and produced, or was rumored to have, many other superweapon projects. Such include the Onager-class Star Destroyer, was a type of capital ship that utilized a kyber crystal superweapon; The rumored Mass Shadow Generator, which would have existed in both realspace and hyperspace; The Torpedo Sphere, a siege platform and space station. The Omega Frost, a rumored interstellar freeze ray; and the Electro-Proton Bomb/Defoliator, based off the electro-proton bomb and the defoliator from the Clone Wars.[13]

Behind the scenes

Earlier versions of the 2015 film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens had the Resistance developing a superweapon known as the War-Hammer. In those versions, the War-Hammer would've been several times the size of a Star Destroyer and had the form of a massive ship with a huge front that could penetrate any shield and was able to deploy ships through it.[16]
