An election for the role of Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic was held by the Galactic Senate in the standard year 36 BBY.[1] The sitting chancellor, Finis Valorum, won a second four-year term by a slim margin.[2] Around the time of the election, many members of the Senate had doubt's about Valorum's leadership. Several opposition parties began drawing up lists of possible replacements, many of which suggested Senator Palpatine of the planet Naboo[1]—one of Valorum's oldest friends[2]—as a candidate.[1]
As he commenced his second term, Valorum increasingly relied on Palpatine's counsel, unaware of the senator's true intentions.[3] Palpatine would later orchestrate a Vote of No Confidence against Valorum in 32 BBY, ousting him from office. Palpatine was victorious in the subsequent election. Valorum's victory in 36 BBY would later be mentioned in a historical document compiled by the Galactic Federation Historical Council by 36 ABY.[1]
