Supreme Commander, also referred to as the supreme commander of the Imperial military, was a military title given to the senior-most officer in Imperial High Command, who also held direct authority over the entirety of the Imperial Military.
Powers[]
The responsibilities of the military-industrial complex fell to the Supreme Commander, who was briefed daily by the Joint Chiefs, created the agenda of the armed forces to fulfill the Emperor's galactic strategy, and managed Imperial High Command. The individuals who achieved the rank of Supreme Commander reportedly did not retain it for long, as the Emperor promoted infighting and competitiveness among the senior officers, and shifted assignments and responsibilities frequently.[2]
Historian Beaumont Kin noted in The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire that he was unsure if Darth Vader's later position of supreme commander of the Imperial fleet was synonymous with that of the Imperial Military's overall leader.[3] In stripping the rank[4] of supreme commander of the Imperial military[3] from Tagge, Galactic Emperor Sheev Palpatine indeed granted all of Tagge's control to Vader.[4]
History[]
After the Battle of Yavin, General Cassio Tagge was simultaneously promoted to the military rank of Grand General and elevated by Emperor Palpatine to the office of Supreme Commander,[5] thus granting him authority over the Sith Lord Darth Vader and putting him in charge of overseeing the war effort against the Rebellion and the cracking down of criminal elements like the Crymorah Syndicate and the Son-tuul Pride.[6] General Tagge held the position until he was stripped of his new rank by Emperor Palpatine and subsequently killed by the intolerant Lord Vader for his multiple blunders during the Shu-Torun War and his misplaced trust in the rogue Doctor Cylo.[4]
Behind the scenes[]
The Databank establishes that Tagge was named leader of the Imperial Military, thereby making Tagge the Supreme Commander as per the definition laid out by Dawn of Rebellion.[5] Alternatively, the in-universe history book Star Wars: The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire stated Tagge became "effective" Supreme Commander. Other moments in the text refer to the rank as a definitive position Tagge held, however.[3] As such, this article assumes Tagge indeed, formally, became Supreme Commander.

General Tagge in the Databank (backup link) states that the title of Supreme Commander was established and given to Grand General Cassio Tagge in the aftermath of the Battle of Yavin, which Star Wars: Galactic Atlas places it in 0 ABY.

General Tagge in the Databank (backup link) and Darth Vader (2015) 2 establishes that Cassio Tagge was given the rank of Grand General and placed in charge of the Imperial Military. Since the individual in command of the Imperial Military is the Supreme Commander per Dawn of Rebellion, it can be deduced that Grand General Tagge was the Supreme Commander of the Imperial Military.
