- "I am the leader of the most powerful droid army the galaxy has ever seen!"
- ―General Grievous, to Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi
Supreme Martial Commander of the Separatist Droid Armies,[4] also referred to as Supreme Commander of the Droid Army,[1] or Supreme Commander of the Separatist droid army,[5] was the title held by General Grievous during the Clone Wars. In this capacity,[1] he served as the leader of the entire Confederacy military[2] throughout the war until his demise on Utapau.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- "General Grievous… Supreme Commander of the Droid Armies. You're shorter than I expected."
- ―Anakin Skywalker, in the Revenge of the Sith screenplay
The Supreme Martial Commander of the Separatist Droid Armies position first appeared through the character of Grievous in the 2005 film Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith.[7] It received its full identification through Grievous's five star Last Stand card in Star Wars: Force Collection[4] but has also received numerous alternate names throughout canon.[1] The 2016 reference book Star Wars Character Encyclopedia: Updated and Expanded[1] and its 2019 update Star Wars Character Encyclopedia, New Edition identified the title as "Supreme Commander of the Droid Army."[8] Meanwhile, however, its 2021 update Star Wars: Character Encyclopedia, Updated and Expanded Edition identifies it as "Supreme Commander of the droid army," lower case.[9] The "The Grievous Growl" article identifies the title as the "Supreme Commander of the Separatist droid army"[5] while the novel Inquisitor: Rise of the Red Blade calls it "Supreme Martial Commander of the Separatist Army."[10]
In the original draft of Revenge of the Sith, written by director George Lucas and dated April 13, 2005, Grievous is introduced in the film's opening crawl as the "commander of the separatist armies." As of the finalized screenplay, however, his introduction in the opening crawl was simplified to just call Grievous the Confederacy's "droid leader." Nonetheless, as "Supreme Commander of the Droid Armies," the title still saw an outright use in the finalized screenplay: Jedi General Anakin Skywalker refers to Grievous by his Supreme Commander title during their meeting aboard the Invisible Hand.[6] However, that mention was not used in the final film.[7]
