"Have you checked out the new T-17s?"
"The T-17s, as far as I can tell, are a great improvement."
"Yeah. That's what they tell you. But believe me, they don't hold up."
"They don't?"
"No."
―A pair of stormtroopers discuss the T-17[1]

Rey once overheard a pair of First Order stormtroopers discussing the new T-17 while on Starkiller Base. One of them thought that they were a "great improvement," though the other replied that "they don't hold up," and implied he knew from personal experience.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

The T-17 mentions in Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens and Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi were added by voice actor Sam Witwer as a reference to a conversation in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope between two stormtroopers who are discussing the BT-16 while Obi-Wan Kenobi disables the tractor beam. Witwer also added similar lines in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story, which mention the T-15, and in Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker which mentions the T-18. Similar reference to the T-16 was added in "Part III" of the series Obi-Wan Kenobi. The mention depended on the era.[2]
