Please ask questions about Wookieepedia not related to the Main Page in the Senate Hall, and questions about Star Wars in general in the Knowledge Bank.

New changes

Several users and I have put together some minor changes for the Main Page, and I will outline each one:

  • Social media icons. We've moved our social media icons out of the Official Friends template at the bottom of the page and placed them prominently at the top of the page. They replaced the interwiki links template, which is just redundant and not as important. In Oasis, the interwiki links are already listed at the bottom of the page, and in Monobook, they're listed in the toolbar on the left side of the page. The social media icons will appear in grayscale until a user hovers over them with their cursor, then they will be highlighted in color. We also added a link to StarWars.com as a courtesy and out of fairness, since they link to us.
  • New messages. We added the following messages. The first is an expansion on the spoilers warning: "Warning: This wiki contains spoilers, and not all content is appropriate for all ages!" This was done partly in response to some of the flak we've taken over the years for some of our more sensitive subject matter, such as the breast article. While we certainly will not bend to cries for censorship, we felt it was nonetheless appropriate to leave a notice, since Star Wars is a "family franchise." This way, people can't claim they weren't forewarned. The other message is an official recommendation to use Monobook instead of the default Wikia skin: "For an optimal viewing experience, Wookieepedia recommends using the Monobook skin. For help changing your skin preferences, see Help:Skin." Note that this message's existence on the Main Page is policy that was ratified here, but for some reason we never implemented it. We tried to see if there was a way for it to only show up in Oasis view, but we couldn't find a better option other than putting it in the Community Corner, which is not clearly visible, or as a popup, which Wikia Staff frowns upon. This is the best option we settled with.
  • Click for navigation. We also performed a major update of the navigation dropdown feature, which was in desperate need.

Feel free to comment. We have more ideas in the works, and we can always make tweaks. Toprawa and Ralltiir (talk) 05:54, April 3, 2014 (UTC)

  • I like the changes. I've implemented a bit of CSS that will hide the skin notice in Monobook. Give it a few minutes (at least 10) due to caching before you say it's not working.

    • I need to go to bed, but somebody please take a look at the Main Page on a phone in the mobile skin (or switch to Oasis and use the preview function there, which gives you the option to view it in the mobile skin). The social media links are showing up twice because the mobile skin strips out virtually all CSS. I think we're going to need to use JavaScript to change the image colors rather than CSS. The skin notice might also be better added with JavaScript for the same reason, since Monobook is not phone-friendly and the same trick I used to hide the notice on Monobook won't work in the mobile skin.

      • Looks like the Article Navigation box is busted too, since dropdowns don't work. I wonder if there's a way to force mobile Wikia to fetch a completely different main page, one sans CSS. JorrelWiki-shrinkableFraajic 07:31, April 3, 2014 (UTC)
        • My only complaint would be the skin notice. Sure it is the rule, but because you have to be a registered member to change the skin and the majority of people that view the main page aren't going to be registered nor are they ever going too. Fe Nite (talk) 18:08, April 3, 2014 (UTC)
          • It is only present on the Main Page, and it was agreed upon by community consensus. Also, the Tardis Wiki uses a similar sitenotice to inform people about their choice of skin. Cade StupidRepublicEmblem-Traced-TORkit Calrayn 18:16, April 3, 2014 (UTC)
            • I understand that it was agreed upon by consensus. Not going against that. I am just saying that the majority of people who read Wookieepedia use the wikia skin because it's the default one; and unless Wikia decides to switch everything to monobook, it will stay that way. But you are right. It is irrelevant to this discussion, so I will drop it here. Fe Nite (talk) 23:30, April 5, 2014 (UTC)
          • I think the skin notice is a nice addition. Is there no way to direct the user to a link that will automatically switch skins? Anyway, I'd only suggest shortening the phrase. Something like For an optimal viewing experience, Wookieepedia recommends using the Monobook skin. To learn how to change it, click here. Stake black msg 02:29, April 4, 2014 (UTC)
    • Ok, the social media icons should be fixed now in the mobile skin. Toprawa and Ralltiir (talk) 02:14, April 4, 2014 (UTC)

A few more thoughts:

  • Eliminating the article navigation definitely cleans up the mobile version of the page. I like it.
  • The elimination of the duplicate social media icons is good, however, that leaves us with just the grayscale icons on mobile. Since there is no such thing as "hovering over them" on an entirely touchscreen mobile device, it seems that we should therefore use the colored icons on mobile. However, I'm not sure of the best way to accomplish this, or if it can be done at all without altering the behavior on desktop.
  • The skin notice probably should be hidden on mobile as well; it's a bit unreasonable to tell mobile users to use a desktop skin that is anything but phone-friendly. Trust me, I've tried to use Monobook on my phone and it's a royal pain in the ass. The mobile skin may have its flaws, but on a smartphone it is superior to Monobook.
  • In reply to Stake black:
    • Technically, we could give a link directly to Monobook, but that would only last for that one page load. The next page load would revert back to Oasis. Short of concocting some JavaScript to allow users to set a browser cookie to redirect all Oasis page requests to ?useskin=monobook (which Wikia would probably be annoyed at), the only way to get a skin change to persist past the first page is to manually change it in preferences.
    • I wouldn't object to making it shorter, but please note that "click here" is evil and should be avoided.

That's all I have to say for right now.

Round 2

For Round 2 of our Main Page changes, we've totally overhauled the navigation feature to move it out of the dropdown so that people can actually see it. We've greatly expanded it with additional sections and added a dropdown visual element. Other minor changes were made to the Random status article box, and the "Hide" feature was implemented for all of the MP's templates. Cade did most of the legwork, so I'll let him detail anything else I've missed. Feel free to comment. Toprawa and Ralltiir (talk) 00:33, April 12, 2014 (UTC)

  • I like the general idea, but it seems to clutter up the main page quite a bit. Shouldn't the default option be to hide the drop-down boxes? Adamwankenobi (talk) 00:38, April 12, 2014 (UTC)
    • Looks great on desktop, not so much on mobile, If you open the page on a phone and scroll down to below the Official Friends, you get humongous, badly-formatted lists of images that are probably a huge waste of data.

      • Um, no you don't. I've specifically designed the system to have a mobile subpage that's completely different - none of the dropdowns are included on that page. See here. Cade StupidRepublicEmblem-Traced-TORkit Calrayn 05:22, April 12, 2014 (UTC)
        • Indeed, I just found that subpage. It appears to have been a temporary Wikia problem that I encountered.

STAR WARS:The Clone Wars :Victory on Osan

I have designed a comic titled "Victory On Osan" that fits into canon of Star Wars. I would like permission to write some articles on it. Please Reply... --Tayd0gta (talk) 21:29, April 29, 2014 (UTC)

It doesn't have to be.--Tayd0gta (talk) 02:54, April 30, 2014 (UTC)

It has the potential to be canon as it does not go against anything that happens in the story of STAR WARS.--Tayd0gta (talk) 03:05, April 30, 2014 (UTC)

I'm mailing the comic.--Tayd0gta (talk) 23:46, April 30, 2014 (UTC)

  • That's a waste of time. For legal reasons, they cannot even glance at unsolicited material. If you send it to them, it will go straight into the trash can without being looked at. You can't just ask Lucasfilm to write official material; the authors that do are hand-selected by Lucasfilm/Disney based on their previously published works.

oh, is this where i put titles?

Yes i know this post is awful, but I'm not use to the mechanics. Helo, i was new hear yesterday, and I'm liking it so far, but i do have one subjection that may help make this wiki better. I'm use to pages everywhere with no purpose other then to as a group share your thoughts or ask a question and have large amounts of well scifi experted people jump in and answer them. Not quit shure i see these kind of pages though. If you see such places can you let me know? it will make conquering your galaxy so much easier.:) --. [[User:Lord of the STARS i may posably be the son of pirate prince, this is not confurmed. 05:25, May 3, 2014 (UTC)

If you mean a place to ask specific questions about canon, the Knowledge Bank forum exists for that purpose, though you are expected to read the relevant articles first. Beyond that, Wookieepedia does not allow general discussion about Star Wars, as we are an encyclopedia and not a general-purpose message board. General discussion topics should be taken to an external site such as the Jedi Council Forums.

Spark of Rebellion

Shouldn't Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion be added under the spinoff film drop-down on the main page? --{{SUBST:Dentsig}} 22:45, August 21, 2014 (UTC)

  • I think that would be appropriate but, I am not an admin, but I think it would fall under spin off films. Matt Seay (talk) 22:49, August 21, 2014 (UTC)

Template:Dropdown-IU

Two problems with the "characters" menu here that I lack the skills or knowledge to fix:

  1. Some of the era icons are transparent on the upper right and lower left corners, while others have patches of white there. All should be transparent in those two corners.
  2. The Legacy era icon is breaking onto a second line, making it difficult to navigate to since bringing the mouse over the top row of icons brings up a second menu that covers up the Legacy era icon.

If those can be fixed, I'd appreciate it. (Also, it occurs to me that we should probably add the major Rebels characters to that menu now that the season has started, but as they do not fall under publishing eras, I don't know how best to do that.) —MJ— Training Room 05:45, October 14, 2014 (UTC)

Rogue Onee

Shouldn't Rogue One be added to the drop down menu for spin off silms? Skywalker2255 (talk) 13:53, March 22, 2015 (UTC)

  • Similarly, the new canon's comics and novels should be featured. —Silly Dan (talk) 16:59, March 22, 2015 (UTC)

Yes, I agree. Unfortunatly i cwn not edit the page. Skywalker2255 (talk) 22:11, March 22, 2015 (UTC)

  • An admin will have to do it, as the Main Page is locked to prevent vandalism. I'd do it myself, but I lack the ability to do the image editing work that would be necessary. —MJ— Jedi Council Chambers 22:31, March 22, 2015 (UTC)
    • Episode VIII and Episode IX both use just plain links, so at the very least Rogue One could be added without any image work. - Brandon Rhea(talk) 22:43, March 22, 2015 (UTC)
      • True, I forgot that we don't have an image for Rogue One yet. That one has been added. —MJ— Comlink 00:38, March 23, 2015 (UTC)
        • Since we have a clear image (not just the picture taken from the show floor) for the Rogue One logo now, should it be added to the main page? --Dentface (talk) 19:14, May 16, 2015 (UTC)
          • Done. It doesn't look all that pretty, as it's a small horizontal logo next to a bunch of big vertical posters, but it's better than the text link that was there IMO. —MJ— Council Chambers 05:00, May 17, 2015 (UTC)

Why Does The Wiki Use Past-Tense

I'm not exactly sure if this is true for all the pages, but I've noticed that many of the wiki pages are in past tense. Star Wars is still going on, and so is it's universe. I wasn't sure if this was meant to be for some reason (maybe because it's "LONG AGO, in a galaxy far, far away".) or if someone made that mistake and it was just picked up. If someone could get back to me, that be great. Thanks, and may the force be with you. --Scott209 (talk) 21:59, April 28, 2015 (UTC)

  • It's because of what you said: Star Wars takes place "a long time ago." As such, even though the franchise is still going, then from an in-universe perspective these events all happened in the past. - Brandon Rhea(talk) 22:02, April 28, 2015 (UTC)
  • Ok, thanks.--Scott209 (talk) 02:04, May 9, 2015 (UTC)

But about species though? are they considered extinct? I understand the events are past tense but we don't know about if the many starwars species went extinct. Unsigned comment by Zed'drath (talk • contribs).

  • We don't know that they went extinct, but a community consensus was made that all in-universe articles, even things like water and boots, be written in past tense no matter the subject. Ayrehead02 (talk) 23:06, September 6, 2018 (UTC)

Add Siege of Lothal to spinoff tab?

Since The Siege of Lothal has been confirmed as a TV movie, shouldn't it be added to the spinoff films tab on the main page? --Dentface (talk) 15:57, May 2, 2015 (UTC)

  • Is it confirmed to be available as a stand-along home video release? Or is it really just an extra-long episode? —Silly Dan (talk) 17:25, May 2, 2015 (UTC)
    • It hasn't been confirmed for home video release, but it is a stand alone movie, just like Spark of Rebellion as per this press release. --Dentface (talk) 20:52, May 2, 2015 (UTC)
      • There comes a point where we need to be judicious regarding what we put in the nav template, because we can't fit everything. Siege of Lothal is not as notable as Spark of Rebellion nor the upcoming spin-off films, many or all of which will definitely be included in the drop down once we have images to use. Given that, not to mention we don't even have a movie poster for Siege of Lothal yet (if ever?), it's a solid candidate to omit from the template. Toprawa and Ralltiir (talk) 02:10, May 11, 2015 (UTC)

I do believe that only canon things should be present in the tabs but Legends can get its own tab. What do you think? Skywalker2255 (talk) 10:44, August 19, 2015 (UTC)

  • What exactly is the issue? From what I can see, the interlang template at the bottom of our Main Page links to Biblioteka Ossus. Toprawa and Ralltiir (talk) 16:29, June 29, 2015 (UTC)
    • Hey, I was about to point it out, but I see it was mentioned before: the current interwiki link replaces Polish alphabet signs with html substitutes which results in creating a link to nonexistent subpage. If you could replace it with "pl=Strona główna", it would be much aprreciated.--Mariobaryla (talk) 21:36, October 20, 2015 (UTC)

Star Wars reboot

I have not seen the movie, however, from what I am reading on this web site, J. J. Abrams is doing to Star Wars what he did to Star Trek. What I mean is this, everything that I have read about the main actors up until now is completely changed. For example, I recall that there was a story where Chewie had died while saving the lives of people on some planet. Now, all of that was removed and replaced with information from this new movie. All of this new stuff is already contradicting other pages that were not changed. I cannot see how Wookiepedia is going to be able to explain all this. Honestly, I think that this new story is going to be a huge mistake and should be forgotten about. Thank you. George.e.pierson (talk) 02:03, December 22, 2015 (UTC)

  • We have two types of pages: Canon and Legends. The Legends pages document the story in the now non-canon Expanded Universe (books, novels, games), which is now called Star Wars Legends. The Canon pages document the official story of Star Wars, including The Force Awakens. Each page is marked with a "Canon" or "Legends" label that will tell you whether it's canon or not. - Brandon Rhea(talk) 02:06, December 22, 2015 (UTC)

Emmy?

Okay, shouldn't the news relating to John Williams be Grammy instead of Emmy? The former is an award won for musical scores or songs, the latter is awards won relating to TV productions. Weedle McHairybug (talk) 12:21, February 13, 2017 (UTC)

IU Template To Reflect Cannon

The in-universe template is in serious need of an update--or rather, a complete overhaul--to reflect the fact that there is a new cannon (it's not "new" anymore since we're 3 years in, with 2 films so far, not to mention "Rebels," literature, comics, and so on). It's all EU material, which is now Legends and no longer canonical; it's basically meaningless. There need to be links to the characters, planets, governments/organizations, vehicles, etc. that are in the Sequel Trilogy and anthology films since this material is official. Has anyone else thought of this?Lordshadowspawn0521 (talk) 18:58, May 28, 2017 (UTC)

Legends is still part of the history of Star Wars, so it is hardly meaningless. But I do agree that update is in order.--Dionne Jinn (Something to say?) 19:30, May 28, 2017 (UTC)
  • I agree they should update the main page, giving more priority to canon content, but without disappearing completly the legends content ---DarthRuiz30 (talk) 19:35, May 28, 2017 (UTC)
  • I have an idea for this: add another layer to the drop-down, with one tab labeled canon and another labeled legends. This could be under all the individual drop-down menus.--D9328 (talk) 22:33, July 21, 2017 (UTC)d9328

Suboptimal optimal layout

Only because Wookieepedia specifically takes pains to present the Monobook skin as the "optimal" viewing experience for the site, I feel the need to point out that the "Wookieenews" box on the main page causes layout issues in narrower browser widths that don't feel especially optimal.

A couple of screenshots over at imgur easily illustrate the problem, which is that the overly-wide and exclusively fixed-width Wookieenews box will overlap the right-hand column, if the page layout isn't wide enough to accomodate it in the main column.

Not only is this not a problem using the Wikia skin at the same width (second screenshot at the link above), but with that skin the right-hand column will be Responsively moved out of the way if the window is narrowed further, ensuring that it doesn't become a problem. (A behavior that could perhaps thus be emulated for the Monobook skin? Regardless which skin is selected, the main and right-hand columns are largely unchanged; they display the same content — excepting the skin-selection notice in the Wikia skin — using similar layout, and just apply different styling.) The Wikia skin's graceful handling of width changes is what really calls into question the optimal-ness (it's a word now!) of Monobook. -- FeRDNYC (talk) 12:08, August 7, 2017 (UTC)

Issue with Solo Background on Main Page

Hey, just wanted to let someone who could possibly fix it know that there is a glitch on the main page with the background Solo image that makes it keep disappearing on the main page and be replaced by a thick grey background that cause formatting issues near the top of the page. Though someone with the ability might be able to fix this issue. Thanks.--Benjay2345 (talk) 07:03, May 26, 2018 (UTC)

  • That's intentional, if it's coupled with a larger ad unit on the Main Page. This is only to do with the Main Page. It's a FANDOM product and nothing that Wookieepedia has any control over. - Brandon Rhea(talk) 07:05, May 26, 2018 (UTC)
    • Well that's rather annoying. Do you have any idea why other wikis don't have that problem? It seems as though Wookieepedia is the only one that this is happening for? Has it always been like this? lol (I'm new to the Oasis layout after the Monobook shutdown)--Benjay2345 (talk) 07:09, May 26, 2018 (UTC)
      • It's a thing on all wikis, if that type of ad is running. But not all wikis are going to be running the same kinds of ads at all times. - Brandon Rhea(talk) 07:16, May 26, 2018 (UTC)

Hey, could someone with the ability to edit the main page change the image on the Episode IX Casting Announcement story to File:Star Wars Episode IX Updated logo (casting announcement).jpg which is an updated version of the IX logo? Thanks.--Benjay2345 (talk) 21:08, July 27, 2018 (UTC)

Colon placement in titles

Why is it this wiki has the colon in the movie titles placed after "Star Wars" instead of after the episode number? "Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope" is just plain wrong. It should be "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope". I mean, do you refer to the fourth TES game as "The Elder Scrolls: IV Oblivion"? No, it's "The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion". Do you spell the second Star Trek movie as "Star Trek: II The Wrath of Khan"? No, it's "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan". See what I mean? Jykale (talk) 13:34, January 31, 2019 (UTC)
