Name?[]

I am highly confused on why this article claims "Ogl'woxz" was a randomly generated name? Could the Gran scientist have different names? If he was always "Ogl'woxz" then that is his name, I feel like something is missing here and no explanation is being given. ralok (talk) 05:56, February 6, 2016 (UTC)

  • Lots of NPCs in SWG (not all), when they spawned, would have randomly generated names. So when one player played this quest, it may have been Ogl'woxz, but when another player played this quest, it might have been like... Oniateoly... or something. Granted, there is a chance I may be mistaken and this character was always called Ogl'woxz on all the servers when any player played this quest. But so far, the only mention I can find of Ogl'woxz is on the SWGWiki, which while very often accurate, cannot be relied on as a definitive source. I've scoured the game files for any mention of Ogl'woxz in the quest dialogue, and have yet to find any. The game's creature database also does not refer to this character as Ogl'woxz, but rather simply "a scientist." A search on Google does not yield any results for Ogl'woxz, other than what was pulled from the SWGWiki. However, if this character was always called Ogl'woxz, we should definitely change it back. But I feel like we need to locate a game file, or more screenshots of this character to know for sure. StarsiderSWG (talk) 15:53, February 6, 2016 (UTC)
    • However, I did just find a site written in Japanese back in 2005 that referred to this character as Ogl'woxz... so I will admit it may have actually been a permanent name, but I'm going to investigate a bit further before changing it back. StarsiderSWG (talk) 16:06, February 6, 2016 (UTC)
    • I... do not believe even remotely, that any SWG character has randomly generated names. I think you are confusing the fact that they had randomly generated bodies, with randomly generated names. Surely people spawn as different people, but never with a different name.... can you provide any proof whatsoever taht there are randomly generated names? ralok (talk) 16:53, February 6, 2016 (UTC)
      • I'm busy at the moment, but I'll point out some examples later this afternoon. I will say randomly generated names were more predominant prior to the NGE. StarsiderSWG (talk) 17:43, February 6, 2016 (UTC)
  • Alright. Before I go on, I just want to reiterate that you very well may be right that Ogl'woxz was a permanently assigned name for the Gran scientist. While I'm inclined to move it back, I just want to outline in some detail why I'm a little hesitant to do so. For starters, some NPCs did indeed have randomly generated names. This was mostly the case prior to the NGE when you'd see Stormtrooper have random "TK" designations, or dynamic Rebel soldier NPCs have random names like "Ogeopa Aegibea" (just as an example). After the NGE, the developers changed a lot of this, so that Stormtrooper would just be labeled "A stormtrooper", and Rebels would just be labeled a specific title, like "A Rebel guerrilla fighter." There were also instances, even post-NGE, where certain static NPCs would have a specifically tailored appearance, but have a randomly generated name. Orqiti Aneofo is one example (I have at least a couple screenshots of her with different names), and her article is only titled as such because her randomly generated name was used on an online source material. An Unidentified Death Watch Overlord was another example. The article creator originally titled the article Teti Viba, but if you go to the SWGWiki article for that page, you'll see that the image just identifies him as a "Death Watch Overlord," as post-NGE, the developers did away with lots of random designations. Another example is the Unidentified Rebel contact. Her page was originally titled Mygi Oci, but there was another online player guide which noted her name as Eucoaschlif Agogho. So how does this relate to Ogl'woxz exactly? Well...
    • For one, unlike most other NPCs involved with THIS quest, such as Kkrax and Wuioe Opca, "Ogl'woxz" was not a static NPC fixed to a specific location. Rather, he would spawn only when players selected a terminal as part of the quest. In my experience playing the game, it was usually the non-static NPCs that seemed most prone to having randomized elements (be it name, appearance, etc).
    • Secondly, unlike the quest NPCs Wuioe Opca and Kkrax, I can find nothing on Ogl'woxz's name in my directory tree files or on any GitHub repository. While repositories for SWG emulation projects aren't complete, and can't always be relied on as a source, it raises red flags in my mind when his name isn't in the repositories, but many other NPCs are. As you can see HERE, the NPC in question does not have "Ogl'woxz" listed as the assigned name, while if you look HERE, characters like Kkrax do. Again, I have noted instances where these GitHub repositories simply lack comprehensive information. Even though the game's source code has been leaked, it's illegal to host or disseminate it due to copyright issues, so all the emulation projects have to go on is client-side code, and not server-side code which may offer more insight into the name of this NPC.
    • Thirdly, we lack a lot of screenshots of this character. There is one on SWGWiki, but it's just of the graphical model, and does not contain the name.
  • With all of the above said, there is some reason to believe his name really was Ogl'woxz. THIS Japanese site back in August, 2005 listed his name as Ogl'woxz and THIS English forum also does so in October, 2005. Given that it appears neither of these sites copied information from one another, this seems to be enough proof in my mind that the name can be sufficiently corroborated. I just write this, because sometimes you have to be skeptical when it comes to making/editing SWG articles here on Wookieepedia. I've encountered so much erroneous information on this site that people have claimed was from SWG. Even I have made the mistake of creating articles with erroneous information (since corrected), all because the game was really confusing on how it did things. The fact that the game is no longer around doesn't help at all either, so often all we have to go on is the raw game files or spotty online forum material to corroborate information (assuming we lack sufficient screenshots). I will move the article back now, but I believe that in most cases it's best to sacrifice comprehensiveness for accuracy, unless we have supporting evidence (which in this case, I still find very spotty, but perhaps sufficient). At least we have this discussion on record in case any other information about this character comes up in the future. StarsiderSWG (talk) 00:01, February 7, 2016 (UTC)
    • Okay... further proof HERE that the name was randomly generated. I will move back to "Unidentified Gran scientist" during the week. StarsiderSWG (talk) 06:31, February 22, 2016 (UTC)
      • Just so it's on record, I can finally conclude that Ogl'woxz is in fact this guys name, according to a TRE game file titled npc_names.stf StarsiderSWG (talk) 19:32, June 9, 2017 (UTC)
