"My mother was drunk when I got married. This room. Right here. Just like this. I was so angry I don't think I ever forgave her. But I could never understand why she'd done it until just now."
―Mon Mothma, to her daughter Leida[2]

Tanis[3] was a female Chandrilan and the mother of Mon Mothma.[1] She served as the governor of[3] the Chandrilan capital[4] Hanna City,[3] as well as her home planet of Chandrila. Her husband, who was also the father of her daughter, served the Galactic Republic as an arbiter-general.[1]

On the day of her fifteen-year-old daughter's wedding to Perrin Fertha, Tanis got drunk. In her state, she failed to give the bride the chance to back out of an arranged marriage that would ultimately make her unhappy, which became the root of Mon's enduring resentment towards her mother.[2]

Toward the end of her life, Tanis fell ill. The last time Mon Mothma and her husband Perrin visited her, the former governor was withering away in bed, arguing about her appetite and refusing her medication.[5]
