"The Dragonsnake Saves R2-D2" is a short comic strip written and illustrated by Katie Cook and published in the 2020 anthology book From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back. In the comic, R2-D2 falls into a bog and is rescued by a dragonsnake.

Plot summary[]

A dragonsnake sleeps in the Dragonsnake Bog on[1] the planet[6] Dagobah,[7] with a fish smiling behind it. Suddenly, a T-65B X-wing starfighter, Red Five, lands atop the dragonsnake, waking and hurting the creature. The X-wing partially sinks into the water, and the rebel pilot[1] Luke Skywalker[7] disembarks to survey the scene.[1]

Still aboard the starfighter is an R2 series astromech droid named R2-D2. The dragonsnake looks on angrily until the pilot calls out in anguish, as the droid has fallen into the swamp. The dragonsnake dives underwater to clutch the R-series droid in its mouth, brings him to the surface, and spits him out. The dragonsnake and R2-D2, now safe on dry land, wave goodbye to each-other.[1]

Development[]

"The Dragonsnake Saves R2-D2," a short comic strip, was published as part of the anthology book From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back on November 10, 2020.[3] The comic strip, written and illustrated by Katie Cook,[1] was the 13th of 40 short stories in the anthology book,[4] and was announced by publisher Del Rey on November 6, 2020.[2]

Continuity[]

The comic adapts a scene from the 1980 film Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back,[7] set in 3 ABY.[5] The comic's tone is more-lighthearted than the scene, as it depicts R2-D2 and the dragonsnake waving good-bye, which did not occur in the movie.[7]
