"The Droid with a Heart" is a short story that was published in Myths & Fables. The story was authored by George Mann, illustrated by Grant Griffin, and published on August 6, 2019. The tale is about a Tactical droid that disregards orders and its programming to protect its fellow droids.
Plot Summary[]
A solider admired the cold logic of droids and over time had replaced nearly all of his 'weak' generic material with droid parts. Rising through the ranks the solider was promoted to the rank of General during the war between the Republic and the Separatists.
On the frigid world of Alamass, the General was task with destroying a enemy stronghold. After deploying probe droid the General spotted a tactical weakness in the Republic's defenses. The Republic forces had left their western flank exposed believing it was protected by ice storms, ammonia vents and alien beasts. The General knew that though an approach from that direction would result in certain victory it would cost of thousands of battle droids, nearly one third of his army. But to him droids were mere machines so he began deployment of his army. The general has planned to send a smaller second force from the south to attack the enemy while it was fighting the surprise force from the west.
However a tactical droid advisor had grown tried of the way the General treated his troops. Despite knowing that the General's plan was the only way path to victory the tactical droid made the active decision to violate its programming and orders. It sent orders for the second force to engage early. Having easily defeated the second force the Republic was ready for the main attack force. The General was forced to admit defeat and withdraw his main force, though the droid losses were much less then what was expected. Discovering that the tactical droid had processed the orders incorrectly The General cut it to pieces. But many droids still remember its bravery and decision to protect its fellow droids.

During the events of "Destroy Malevolence," which takes place during the Clone Wars and can be dated to 22 BBY per the reasoning here, Grievous loses the Malevolence, which Dooku describes as the Confederacy of Independent Systems's "prized warship." As "The Droid with a Heart" states that the Battle of Alamass was Grievous's first major loss during the Clone Wars, it must occur after the conflict began but before he lost the Malevolence, placing the battle in 22 BBY.
