The credited author is Shep Steneman. As with all of the Star Wars adaptations in the "storybook" category, this is aimed at younger readers and is lavishly illustrated with many movie stills, including stills from some cut scenes, such as the Rebel medical droid examining the remains of Luke's tauntaun.
