- "We wanted to do The First Jedi. Basically how the Jedi Order came to be, why it came to be, the first lightsaber…"
- ―David Benioff
The First Jedi was the first Star Wars film of a planned series of films to be helmed by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, which was first announced by Lucasfilm on February 6, 2018.[2] However, on October 28, 2019, it was reported that Benioff and Weiss had exited the film series due to scheduling conflicts.[3][4] On October 30, Variety reported that the plans Benioff and Weiss had for the film series involved the exploration of the origins of the Jedi. On January 10, 2024, the duo confirmed that their project was focused on exploring how the Jedi Order began, why it began, and exploring the first lightsaber and they confirmed that Lucasfilm ultimately passed on the project and were not interested. During the interview they also revealed the film's original title The First Jedi, and that they abandoned the title when their longtime friend Rian Johnson titled his film The Last Jedi.[1]
Despite the cancellation of the project by Benioff and Weiss, a new Star Wars film that is set to explore the dawn of the Jedi era was announced on April 7, 2023 to be directed by James Mangold.[5]
