Plot summary[]
"Street rats"[]
In a bustling city, two Duros children run past pedestrians. One of them named Colby has blue skin while the other Niro has green skin. After eyeing a tray of red fruits, Colby digs food out of a rubbish bin while Niro watches a television news report about gang warfare in their city. The two Duros then move away from the store window. Niro digs through a trash can while Colby touches a machine. Another Duros child named Blik approaches the two Duros boys. His parents soon follow and his mother tells him to get away from the other two Duros boys, whom she describes as "street rats." Blik looks back at them before walking away.
Colby leads Niro towards a grocery store. While peering at fruits through a store window, they are noticed by the Aqualish storekeeper, who shoos them away. The two children flee down an alleyway. They find a green cylindrical fruit in a trash can and start to share it. Shortly later, a Rodian man is tossed out of a door by an adult Duros man and a Twi'lek woman, who tell him not to come back till he has settled his debts. The Duros man shoos the children away and they run out of the alleyway laughing. They run past a Duros man sporting a cowboy's hat. He watches the kids while chewing a toothpick.
The "businessman" and his gift[]
Later, the children continue scavenging through trash cans for food. They spot a RA-7 protocol droid named CB who is carrying fruits in a grocery bag. The two boys converged on CB, who attempts to shoo them away. When Colby bumps into him, the boys pretend to help him but steal his fruits. The boys are watched by the man, who shadows them. While the boys are eating their stolen fruits in an alleyway, the man approaches them. Though the boys are startled, he reassures them that he is not a police officer and gives them a coin.
Niro takes the coin and attempts to eat it but is stopped by Colby. When Colby asks what it is, the man replies that it is an investment. Later that night, the boys roam through the streets and decide what to do with the coin. They enter a grocery store full of fruits and various goods. The two boys eye a dispenser. An Aqualish store clerk watches the boys warily. A human man with brown hair enters the store and knocks on the door. Someone opens an eye slit in the door and permits the man inside. The fat Duros man and his Twi'lek associate greet the man and welcome him inside. The door shuts.
Colby motions to Niro as they approach several dispensers full of candy. The two boys grab their candy and head to the counter. The store clerk asks if the stole the coin from someone. Colby says they did not steal the coin but earned it. The Aqualish inspects the coin and accepts their payment. The cheerful kids leave with their candy and celebrate their meal on a rooftop. Niro shares one of his candies with Colby. Colby tosses his box towards a rat, which scurries away. When Niro asks if he missed his parents, Colby replies that he never really knew them.
Hearing a police siren, they run to the edge of the roof. They see two police landspeeders chasing another speeder through the streets of the city. One of the police speeders loses control and crashes into a building. The chase continues and the boys watch as the commotion unfolds.
The second job[]
The following morning, the Duros "businessman" wakes Colby and Niro up. When the boys asks what he wants, the man replies that he is a businessman, who describes them as his investment. The man offers them a taste of the "good life" and follow him through the streets. When Niro notices his right leg limping, the man replies that the "first rule of business" is not to ask questions. The Duros businessman leads them to the grocery store which they visited. When Colby recalls that the Duros business owner doesn't like them, the businessman explains that he also does not like the business owner because his side business interferes with his operations.
When Niro asks what the man what he wants from them, the businessman offers to pay them five times the money he gave them yesterday in return for an errand. Niro places his hand on Colby and speaks with him privately. Niro is concerned about working with the man but Colby sees an opportunity and successfully negotiates for ten coins. The Duros man smiles.
Later that night, the brown haired human visits the grocery store and knocks on the inner door. He is greeted by the fat Duros man and his Twi'lek associate, who welcome him inside. Meanwhile, Colby and Niro throw garbage at the backdoor. This attracts the attention of the Duros man, who complains that they are disturbing his customers. Colby and Niro chuckle. While a gang wielding blasters move down the streets, the man summons two skeletal security droids, who corner the boys. The multispecies gang force their way into the grocery store.
The gang rob the Duros businessman's secret business, which turns out to be a casino. The droids return with the Duros casino owner to deal with the intruders, who run off with their loot. The cession owner gives chase but is shot through the chest by the Duros "businessman" who recruited the boys earlier. The Duros man clutches his smoking wound before falling to the ground. The "businessman" tells the boys to flee. Colby grabs Niro and they flee through the streets.
Separated, and a new "family"[]
Police speeders arrive and police droids jump out in pursuit of the Duros "businessman." The boys head towards the businessman's speeder. However, a police car pulls up on the road between them and the speeder. Colby manages to jump over the police speeder's bonnet but Niro is captured and handcuffed by a police droid. Following a gunfight, the gangsters flee in their getaway vehicle. Colby watches as the landspeeder drives away. The Bith associate pats him on the shoulder while the human stretches his legs.
The Duros "businessman" says the bad news is that his friend got caught but the good news is that Colby gets to keep Niro's share. The "businessman" welcomes Colby to his family and lifts his hat. Colby stares at the ten coins while the speeder soars down the streets.
