This enthralling follow up to Path of Deceit finds cousins Marda and Yana Ro bound by blood but driven apart by faith.
Marda and Yana belong to the Path of the Open Hand, a group led by a charismatic woman called the Mother, which believes the Force must not be used by anyone. While Marda joins a perilous expedition to Planet X in search of more mysterious creatures to use against the Jedi, Yana finds herself forming an unexpected alliance with the father of her dead lover in attempt to wrest the Path from the Mother's control. These two young women will face a crossroads, forced to choose not only their own fates, but that of the galaxy itself.

Development[]

Continuity[]
- During the prologue, on page 4, Yana states that the Mother had betrayed four of the Children of the Open Hand on their last doomed mission. In The High Republic: Path of Deceit, only three Children of the Path went on this mission: Yana, Kor and Treze. Chapter 3, page 39, states that Yana is the only survivor of the original Children. The character of Cincey, who served as a member at the start of Path of Deceit, is finally mentioned in Chapter 61, page 511, and is implied to be dead, even though they did not take part in the Children's final mission in the previous book.
- On page 282 in chapter 27, it is claimed that, according to Ric Farazi's contact and Ric Farazi herself, the Path abandoned Dalna "a week or so" before the Battle of Jedha. Other moments in the book imply a much longer passage of time between the Path's fleeing of Dalna and the battle, however. Indeed, Azlin Rell recalls that two months have passed since the events of Path of Deceit on page 387 in chapter 40.
