Caught by surprise[]
Aboard the Great Hall of the Nihil, Eye of the Nihil Marchion Ro corresponds with Tempest Runners Zeetar and Lourna Dee via holoprojector. Zeetar tries to take credit for protecting the space station but Ro reminds him that fortifying the hall was Dee's idea. When Ro credits Zeetar with rebuilding the Storm, Zeetar castigates Ro for not delivering on his promise to protect them for the Jedi. Zeetar says he expects Ro to be physically present with them at the Great Hall.
Dee opines that Ro is more interested in charting his own course than caring for the rest of the Nihil. Before Ro can respond, Quin Carree reports a Path opening nearby. Marshal Avar Kriss's starship Ataraxia exits hyperspace using a Path engine. Quin doesn't recognize the ship and Zeetar deduces that the Jedi have found them. Ro orders his lieutenants to defend the Great Hall before terminating his connection. Zeetar is angry that Ro has abandoned them and orders Quin to raise the alarm for the Nihil to retreat. Dee denounces Zeetar as a coward and issues a new order to deploy starfighters against the Nihil. Zeetar warns about the danger of the Jedi starship but Dee counters that the Jedi never fire first. However, the Ataraxia bombards the Great Hall, prompting Dee and Zeetar to realize that the Jedi have changed their tactics.
The Jedi invasion[]
Dee orders Zeetar to defend the main entrance while she defends the launch bays. When Zeetar protests that his armor is not yet completed, Dee tells the Tempest Runner to use a flamethrower. At the main entrance, Muglan asks where Dee is. Zeetar responds that Dee is not coming while another Nihil says that she is defending the launch bays. As a defensive measure, the Nihil fighters release a war cloud.
Marshal Kriss along with Jedi Knights Keeve Trennis, Goonral Monshi and Jedi Master Sskeer board the ship, braving the war cloud gas. Kriss orders her fellow Jedi to take them. When Trennis asks if she means to take prisoners, Kriss responds with the war cry for "Light and Life." She recognizes Zeetar, who attempts to kill her with his flamethrower. However, she uses the Force to disperse his blast back at him, shattering his suit and incinerating him. Concerned about Kriss' new-found disregard for the lives of enemy combatants, Trennis follows Kriss, who remarks that she has not stayed with the others.
Steps into darkness[]
Trennis says that she is keeping a watch on her because she is concerned about her aggression. Trennis reminds Kriss that she confiscated Sskeer's lightsaber for killing in cold blood. Trennis explains that Sskeer is sick and his judgment is clouded by pain before demanding to know Kriss' excuse. In rage, Kriss engages Trennis in a lightsaber fight, saying that she will not be lectured by a Jedi whom she knighted. She criticizes Trennis for doubting her abilities and questioning the Song of the Force. Trennis asks if Kriss is practising what she preaches before throwing her down with a Force push.
With Kriss on the ground, Trennis reveals that Masters Stellan Gios and Estala Maru have tasked her with watching Kriss and that their concerns have been validated. Kriss attempts to warn Trennis but she is struck down by Dee, who is donning Zeetar's power armor. Kriss fights back with her lightsaber and damages Dee's vibroblade. Kriss vows to make Dee pay for her crimes on Xais and Valo but Dee asks about her own crimes. Dee orders the Nihil starships to fire on the Great Hall in a scorched earth attack.
When Kriss responds with horror that she would fire on her own people, Dee counters that she is prepared to sacrifice cannon fodder in order to win. Seeing an unconscious Trennis, Kriss summons the Force, which she uses to tear apart Zeetar's armored suit. Dee escapes the disintegrating armored suit but refuses to yield. Armed with Terec's green lightsaber, she engages in a brief duel with Kriss. Enraged that Dee is using a Jedi weapon, Kriss slices off Dee's left hand. As Dee grips her severed armed, Kriss speaks of her covenant to protect people and denounces Dee for making her a liar.
Believing the time for self defense is over, Kriss raises her lightsaber and prepares to strike down Dee with her lightsaber. At that moment, Trennis stirs and reacts with horror to her master attempting to execute Dee summarily.
