Plot summary[]
Magnanimity in victory[]
In No-Space, Nihil starships bombards the Great Hall of the Nihil, killing several of their own comrades. Some are sucked out into zero gravity space but Jedi Knight Goonral Monshi uses the Force to pull some to safety. Jedi Master Sskeer activates the energy fields and contacts the Ataraxia, asking why they were bombarding the Great Hall at the risk of friend casualties. Jedi Knight Nooranbakarakana responds that the Nihil are the ones firing on their own station while OrbaLin suggests that the Nihil are engaging in scorched earth tactics. Nooran opens fire on the Nihil flagship, immobilizing it.
After Nooran updates Master Sskeer, Monshi tells the surprised Nihil survivors that they spared them because they are Jedi who serve life and never death. Meanwhile, Jedi Knight Keeve Trennis blocks Marshal Avar Kriss's lightsaber with her lightsaber, preventing her from killing Tempest Runner Lourna Dee. Trennis says she won't let Kriss kill a disarmed and wounded prisoner, stressing that she has already won. Kriss accepts that she has lost control.
However, this moment of hesitation allows Dee to take Trennis hostage with her own lightsaber. When Dee says that the Jedi belief in mercy is a weakness. Kriss uses the Force to hurl Dee against a wall, knocking her unconscious. Having the final word, Kriss says that mercy is the Jedi's strength. Trennis checks Dee's pulse and concludes that the Twi'lek Tempest Runner is unconscious. Speaking to Kriss, Trennis says that nobody can be perfect. Kriss agrees and says that believing one is infallible only leads to the dark side of the Force. When Kriss asks how she got so "wise," Treniss says that she was lucky to have some of the best teachers in the galaxy.
Homeward bound[]
The Ataraxis uses its Path engine to jump into hyperspace. Following a rough jump, Monshi hopes that they do not have to use the dangerous Path drive again and says they are lucky the ship did not break apar. Kriss replies that their survival is due to the will of the Force. Kriss is triumphant, believing that she has captured the Nihils' leader Dee. Kriss uses her comlink to keep in touch with Master Sskeer, who is keeping watch over the Nihil prisoners with Trennis. Trennis notices that his right arm is bleeding but the Trandoshan says that it is shrapnel wound that he will survive. When Trennis asks about Sskeer's Magrak Syndrome, Sskeer says that the Jedi Council will accept his fate and believes that this will be his last mission.
Trennis disagrees but Sskeer believes his condition is incurable. He tells Trennis that he is proud she has becoming the Jedi he knew she would become. Dee speaks to someone, warning them to keep the noise down or they will clean vomit off the floor of their shiny new cell. Sskeer wants to return to the flight deck and let the guards take over. Trennis tells her master to wait, saying that whatever the Council decides she will make him proud and be his legacy. Sskeer disagrees and counsels Trennis to carve her own path and legacy, stating that this is the rewards of every master since the dawn of the luminous.
As the Ataraxis approaches Starlight Beacon, Kriss opens the comm only to encounter Master Stellan Gios via holoprojector. Gios reveals that he has become the head of Starlight Beacon. When Kriss expresses surprise and suggests this is temporary, Gios explains that the Jedi Council has appointed him as the head of the space station permanently and suspended her for abandoning her post. He chastises her for defying the Council to go on a "wild mynock chase." Kriss disagrees, claiming her mission was a success but an explosion rocks the base of Starlight Beacon.
Trouble at home[]
The explosion unleashes a shockwave that knocks the deflectors aboard the Ataraxis offline and Marshal Kris to the ground. OrbaLin tells Marshal Kriss that the emergency generators are coming online. Dee smiles upon hearing the explosion and seeing the emergency generators come online. Nooran tells Kriss and Monshi that an explosion has rocked the Starlight Beacon's engineering section, knocking the station's communications systems and power offline. When Kriss asks if he can fly them inside the station, Monshi responds that the Starlight Beacon's bay doors are not responding. Watching the disaster unfolding, she observes that the space station is drifting towards the planet Eiram. The other Jedi deduce that Starlight Beacon's stabilizers have been disabled.
Sskeer estimates that Starlight Beacon will enter the planet's atmosphere within an hour. He wonders if the explosion was caused by the stresses of towing the station through the galaxy. Nooran says they should focus on stopping the station's descent into Eiram's atmosphere. Kriss asks if Nooran can bring the Ataraxia along the space station and extend a docking tube. Kriss says that it will be trick but agrees to make an attempt.
Kriss tasks the Archivist OrbaLin with watching over the prisoners while she and the other Jedi board the Starlight Beacon to rescue people. Kriss, Trennis, Sskeer and Monshi don rebreathers. Unable to open the airlock, Kriss uses her lightsaber to force her way inside the station. The four soon encounter several frightened crew and passengers. Kriss tells the people to calm down and promises that they will evacuate them to safety. She tasks Monshi with evacuating the civilians.
Later, Sskeer along with Monshi and Trennis reach the security tower. Sskeer attempts to contact Master Estala Maru. Monshi doubts that they can reach Maru and consults a datapad, which reveals that the entire midsection juncture is flooded with radiation. He notices the top and bottom halves of the station are almost cut off from each idea. Sskeer asks Kriss for ideas. Kriss decides they will devote their energies to helping those in the top half of the Beacon. They will then try and find a way to reconnect the two.
The Nameless[]
Monshi asks about the stabilizes but the Jedi sense a disturbance in the Force. Trennis begins panicking and frothing in the mouth. Monshi also begins frothing. Sskeer asks Trennis what is wrong. Under the influence of the Nameless, Kriss panics and points her lightsaber at Sskeer. Sskeer reacts with shock. Trennis realizes that Sskeer is not the threat but that the "thing" that attacked her and Terec is on Starlight Beacon.
