THE HIGH REPUBLIC
BALANCE OF THE FORCE
Chapter IV: THE HERALD OF THE OPEN HAND
Tensions are rising as Jehda's Festival of Balance
approaches. The Convocation of the Force hopes
the festivities will bring the various churches and
religions of the Holy City together, but mistrust
and hostility run wild.

Jedi Vildar Mac and Matty Cathley were caught
sneaking into the Temple of the Kyber with
disgraced former Guardian of the Whills Tey
Sirrek. Sirrek was expelled, leaving Vildar and
Matty to investigate the alleged robbery of a
Kyber statue from the Temple's corridors.

But you can't keep a good Sephi down. Tey snuck
back into the Temple with his faithful droid,
SK-0T, only to discover a bomb planted outside
Archivist Zumeg's office, a bomb that seconds
later tore a hole in the Temple's wall….

Plot summary[]

Jedi Master Vildar Mac wakes in the Convocation Chambers after being injured by an explosion in Temple of the Kyber archivist Zumeg’s office. Padawan Matthea Cathley and Lonto representative Susalee, who had been healing Mac with tragia leaves, inform Mac that the explosion killed Zumeg, but thanks to Mac’s quick action, there were no other casualties. The Guardians of the Whills have Tey Sirrek, who was seen holding the bomb right before the explosion, in custody. Sirrek’s scout droid, SK-0T, had its holocams and memory core damaged in the explosion, making it impossible to search its recordings and prove Sirrek’s innocence. Mac is not convinced that Sirrek was behind the bombing, though, and says as much to the Convocation of the Force when questioned. The Convocation agrees to tell the public that the explosion was due to a build-up of gas within the Temple, hoping to avoid disrupting the Festival of Balance on Jedha.

Path of the Open Hand Herald Werth Plouth arrives for an audience with the Convocation, accompanied by space prosector Radicaz “Sunshine” Dobbs and Path member Yana Ro. The Herald first demands that the Convocation be disbanded, as the Path believes that all who use The Force are abusing it and throwing it out of its natural balance. When the Council refuses, citing a lack of proof for The Path’s beliefs, he then demands an immediate prohibition of any use of The Force until those beliefs can be proven correct. Plouth storms out of the Convocation building and delivers an incendiary speech to the pilgrims assembled outside of it, revealing the Convocation’s plan to cover up the bombing. Sorcerers of Tund representative Tarna Miak and a handful of Guardians of the Whills attempt to quiet Plouth, while Yana Ro sneaks away to summon The Leveler, a Force-devouring beast the Path is in possession of. Under the influence of the Leveler, Miak hallucinates and sees the faces of the crowd around him morph into monsters. Out of confusion and panic, Miak unleashes a massive pyrokinetic attack on the crowd.
