Plot summary[]

Lula Talisola meditates, but struggles to find peace; she feels that something is wrong, coming from within rather than the world around her. Zeen Mrala asks her what's wrong, and Talisola tells her it's nothing, though they both know it's a lie. They are interrupted by a commotion, and Talisola realizes that it is the Great Jedi Rumble Race. Jedi Masters Torban Buck and Kantam Sy introduce the rules of the race, primarily that there are no rules.

On Corellia, Krix Kamerat speaks to Respriler, and assures him that he has everything under control with the help of Sabata Krill, despite Respriler's attempted warning about the current state of Coronet City politics. As they leave, Kamerat notes that Krill has been quiet, and asks what's on her mind; she claims to be thinking about the Gus Talon plan. Kamerat does not believe her, and as he leaves, he warns her not to betray him. Krill proceeds to rejoin Respriler, who notes that the real planning can now begin.

Sy explains that they and Buck ran the Rumble Race as Padawans on Endovar, though the tradition has since faded, and they wished to revive it. They ask if there are any questions before the race; Mrala asks if the non-Jedi can participate, and Ram Jomaram asks if he can ride on his droid, to both of whom Buck answers that there are no rules. Bibs noted that Jomaram could not actually do so, as they had replaced V-18's fuel with bantha milk. With no other questions forthcoming, Buck announces the beginning of the race.

On Corellia, Respriler discusses the nuna fight they are watching with Krill, and claims that if the leader of a nuna pack becomes lazy, the rest of the pack will band together and eat the leader. Krill informs him that is untrue, as nunas are not pack animals and eat mostly fruits and grains, but notes that he is an asset to the Nihil and she respects his political maneuvering, and she agrees with his larger point: Kamerat must die, and she is already planning to ensure it.

As they run the race, Talisola contemplates her emotions, and feels that her emotions have been overwhelming and uncontrollable lately. Meanwhile, Jomaram passes them riding KC-78, but quickly crashes. Farzala Tarabal points out that Qort is much faster than the rest of them, and asks why he is not far ahead; Qort agrees but says it is more fun with friends. As he passes, Jomaram greets Stellan Gios and Emerick Caphtor, who he recognizes, and Sian Holt, who he does not.

Krill tells Respriler that she will not have to act to take out Kamerat, and that he will take out the Jedi with him. When Respriler asks why she's so certain of this, she answers that she has paid attention to the Jedi, and despite their efforts they are emotional and hubristic. She predicts that the Jedi will attempt to capture Kamerat alive, and Mrala will choose not to kill him only for Kamerat to kill her as soon as he gets a chance. After that, she believes that the Jedi will kill Kamerat immediately in retaliation. Respriler asks why she's so certain they will cross paths, and Krill tells him that she will make sure of it.

Talisola thinks about her rage, sadness, and fear at the recent fighting, despite her attempts at meditation, and thinks that she doesn't know what she would do if something happened to the people she loves. The racers, noticing they are approaching the finish line, suggest they all cross it as one and win it together; however, Buck uses a Force push to slow them and declares himself the winner. Jomaram, confused, points out that Buck was cheering them on, and he says he was cheering them for second place. They agree they should have seen it coming, since there are no rules.

Respriler says he's glad Krill agrees with him, and notes that Kamerat is too shortsighted and driven by rage rather than ambition. He claims that Corellia, while it will help the Nihil with their plans in the Outer Rim, is also useful in its own right. Looking out over the shipyards, he asks Krill to imagine what they could accomplish.
