"Lord Vader has also revised the targeting list. Have the operations people retarget probe droids for the planets Allyuen, Tokmia, and Hoth."
―Captain Lorth Needa, Star Destroyer Avenger[4]

Tokmia was a mostly icy, snow-covered planet in the Anoat sector of the Outer Rim Territories. Home to the primitive, barely-sentient Oku species, Tokmia featured bountiful crystal and ore deposits, from which the Figg Excavations mining company earned a fortune before abandoning the planet. In 3 ABY, during the Galactic Civil War, Tokmia was one of three worlds in the Anoat sector, including Hoth, to which the Galactic Empire sent reconnaissance probe droids in search of the hidden Rebel Alliance base.

Description[]

Tokmia was a frigid, frozen tundra world covered with vast flatlands of snow and ice,[5] as well as lush forests and oceans.[3] The planet was located in the Tokmia system of the Anoat sector, within the Greater Javin region of the Outer Rim Territories'[1] Western Reaches.[2] It was positioned at the virtual center of the Anoat sector, at the terminus of a minor hyperlane connected to the major Corellian Trade Spine by way of the Ione system.[1]

Tokmia numbered among a cluster of three other nearby, similarly mineral-rich planets—Burnin Konn, Allyuen, and Isis—collectively known as the Mining Worlds.[1] Tokmia boasted rich crystal and ore deposits, an enticing draw for mining prospects.[5] A day on Tokmia lasted eighteen standard hours, and a year 220 local days. The planet had 90 percent standard gravity and a Type I atmosphere breathable for Humans.[1]

History[]

Mining operations[]

Figg Excavations, the mining subsidiary of the Outer Javin Company, once turned Tokmia into a hugely lucrative money-making venture by exploiting the planet's crystal and ore deposits.[1] The Tokmia mining enterprise earned Figg Excavations a fortune, and company employees distributed handouts to the planet's native Oku species during each operation.[5] Once the planet's mines ran dry, Figg Excavations pulled out and abandoned Tokmia, leaving behind a strange cargo cult among the Oku, who, remembering the gifts they had been given, burned huge fires to resemble landing lights in prophesy that the magical starships of the offworlders would one day return.[1]

Search for the Rebel base[]

This map shows the Imperial probe droids' launch trajectories, targeting Tokmia, Allyuen, and Hoth.

In 3 ABY,[6] during the Galactic Civil War, Tokmia briefly attracted the interest of the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire.[4] As part of his search for the hidden Rebel Alliance base following the Battle of Yavin, Vader ordered[5] his personal Star Destroyer fleet, the Imperial Death Squadron,[2] to dispatch reconnaissance Viper probe droids[6] to three planets in the Anoat sector to which the Empire suspected the Rebellion may have relocated: Tokmia, Allyuen, and Hoth.[5]

The Imperial Star Destroyers Avenger and Stalker,[2] the former under the command of Captain Lorth Needa,[4] both sent out probe droids assigned to the Tokmia system.[2] Vader's directive to search Tokmia, Allyuen, and Hoth was a departure from the Avenger's original target schedule.[4] The Empire ultimately discovered that Hoth was the planet hosting the Rebellion's new base.[2]

Inhabitants[]

Tokmia was the homeworld of some 400,000 Oku, a barely-sentient, primitive species of white-furred aliens who governed themselves in tribal councils. The abandonment of Figg Excavations' mining operation on Tokmia had a deeply profound impact on the Oku mythos, in which the Oku prophesied that their benevolent offworld visitors would return to their planet again.[1]

Locations[]

Figg Excavations left behind an abandoned mining colony on Tokmia complete with a starport after exhausting the planet's crystal deposits and then moving on to other endeavors.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

The planet Tokmia was first mentioned in the script for the 1983 radio adaptation of Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, written by Brian Daley. Tokmia is one of three planets, Hoth included, to which Captain Needa of the Star Destroyer Avenger is assigned to send probe droids in search of the secret Rebel base.[4] However, the dialogue portion of this scene that mentioned Tokmia was cut from the final version of the radio adaptation[7] and appears only in the script's 1995 publication, The Empire Strikes Back: The National Public Radio Dramatization.[4]

Tokmia was later one of 200 playable worlds included in the 1998 PC game Star Wars: Rebellion, which provided the planet's only visual depiction, an image also used to illustrate twenty-one other planets of similar composition in the game. Star Wars: Rebellion described Tokmia as a lush forest planet,[3] but the 2004 Wizards of the Coast online roleplaying supplement Galactic Gazetteer: Hoth and the Greater Javin described Tokmia as a snow-covered world, in the same vein as Hoth,[1] which was repeated by all subsequent sources detailing the planet.[2][5] In addition, Star Wars: Rebellion and its accompanying strategy guide originally placed Tokmia in the Churba sector,[3][8] but Hoth and the Greater Javin changed its location to the Greater Javin region.[1]

Star Wars: Rebellion cartography[]

Star Wars: Rebellion provides hyperspace travel times between each planet in the game. However, in several instances these times are significantly longer than those in other Star Wars Legends sources, which seems to reflect the Star Wars: Rebellion hyperspace times as game mechanics rather than actual figures. Tokmia's intra-sector hyperspace times and distance from Coruscant according to Star Wars: Rebellion using the game's fastest capital ship hyperdrive are as follows. Note that this chart only includes planets that were canonically located in the Anoat sector with respect to the Legends continuity, excepting Coruscant.
