A translating vocoder,[1] also known as a voice-translator box,[2] vocoder speaker,[3] or vocalizer,[4] was a type of electronic translator used by members of species that could not speak Galactic Basic Standard. The vocoder translated words from their native language to Galactic Basic.
Translating vocoders were used during New Republic Senate hearings in order to make sure that senators could understand what other species were stating.[1]
Some, like the Gigoran Moroff[2] and many Anomids, wore vocoder masks on a daily basis.[5] Ithorian translator collars, worn by members of the species on their necks, were another example of such a device.[6]
