"Dead...! An entire Rebel information retrieval team wiped out...! By someone who found this outpost ahead of us!"
―Darth Vader upon landing on Ultaar[2]

Ultaar was a planet in the Mid Rim Bortele sector, covered in jungles of towering giant blossoms that covered the world with a thick scent. Ultaar was home to the four-armed sentient species known as the Ultaarian Greenback. During the Galactic Civil War, Ultaar became host to a small Rebel presence, which was wiped out in 0 ABY by cyborg bounty hunter Beilert Valance.

A planet covered in thick jungle,[4] Ultaar was located in the Ultaar system of the Mid Rim's Bortele sector.[1] Ultaar was covered in giant blossoms that locals grew for harvest, dominating the planet's skies and filling the air with a powerful, ripe scent.[2] Ultaar was the home of a species of powerful four-armed sentient bipeds known as the Ultaarian Greenback.[3]

History[]

During the time of the Galactic Civil War between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance, Ultaar became the site of a small Rebel outpost. That was, until the year 0 ABY, when cyborg bounty hunter Beilert Valance came to the world seeking information on an unnamed young man who had aided in the Rebel rescue of Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan the previous year. Although the Rebels didn't know anything about the man's identity or location, one of them dared to draw a blaster on Valance—in response, the hunter viciously mowed down the entire Rebel cell, and moved along on his search. Not long after, the Sith Lord Darth Vader arrived on Ultaar with a complement of Imperial stormtroopers, seeking the same information. Vader arrived to find the entire Rebel team slaughtered, save for one grievously wounded survivor. The lone remaining Rebel revealed what had happened in their encounter with Valance, before Vader put him out of his misery.[2]

While the episode was an instance of outsiders coming to Ultaar, in turn, some Ultaarian Greenbacks made their way offworld by the time of the Galactic Civil War. One Greenback[3]—referred to by smuggler and Rebel hero Han Solo as the "living windmill"—entered the gladiatorial competition known as The Big Game on the space station The Wheel. Wielding a poisonous dagger thorn in each hand, the Greenback met his end while fighting Solo, after accidentally pricking himself with his own venom-coated weapon.[5]

Behind the scenes[]

The planet Ultaar first appeared in Star Wars (1977) 21, written by Archie Goodwin and released in 1978. In its sole appearance in the Marvel Comics Star Wars comic series, Ultaar was illustrated by Carmine Infantino.[2]
