"Yoda was really strong in the Force! Luke could not believe it. That was why he had failed. He did not believe in himself. He did not believe in the Force. Luke trained even harder. He listened to Yoda and practiced day and night."

Use the Force! is a young readers story from Disney–Lucasfilm Press, released on April 7, 2015. It tells the story of Luke Skywalker learning the ways of the Force from Jedi Master Yoda, as retold from the film Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back.

Publisher summary[]

Before Luke can be a Jedi, he needs to learn from Yoda! This fully-illustrated level 2 reader retells the classic scenes from The Empire Strikes Back where Luke learns to use the force for the very first time.

Plot summary[]

Wanting to become a Jedi Knight, Luke Skywalker flies in his X-wing starfighter with R2-D2 to the planet Dagobah. There, he seeks the wise Jedi Master, Yoda. After crashing his starfighter in a swamp, he swims to shore and finds a small, green alien who turns out to be Yoda. While not carrying the appearance of a mighty warrior, Yoda agrees to the teach Skywalker the ways of the Force.

Skywalker begins his Jedi training. He endures grueling physical exercises that include doing cartwheels with Yoda strapped to his back, vigorous runs through swamps and handstands. Next, Skywalker encounters a mysterious cave that reeks with the power of the dark side of the Force. Bringing his lightsaber, Skywalker ventures inside the cave, where he discovers the dreaded Darth Vader. The two duel, but when Vader vanishes, Skywalker realizes that Vader was never really there and he has failed the test that was set for him by Yoda.

Skywalker redoubles his efforts in training, but then R2-D2 alerts him that the X-wing starfighter that had crashed into the swamp is sinking. Skywalker is uncertain how to get it out of the swamp, so Yoda tells him to use the Force. Skywalker uses the Force and the vessel begins to rise, but he is unable to pull it out of the swamp. He gives up and begins to walk away, but then, to his surprise, Yoda himself uses the power of the Force to raise the starfighter. Luke is awed, unable to believe what he just saw. He resolves to train even harder, listening to Yoda's instructions and practicing at all hours. He becomes powerful in the Force, learning to lift objects of all sizes using only the Force. During his training, he has a powerful vision of his friends in danger, having been captured by Darth Vader. Though he knows it is a trap, he is resolved to save them. He departs Dagobah in his starfighter, ready to use the Force, but promises Yoda that he will return.[3]
