Canon/Legends switcher

Hey :) Sorry to have had to put this on the backburner for a li'l while, but I got involved in other projects. Luckily, it shouldn't be hard to build you a system like the one at w:c:pt.starwars that will have you up and running within the next day -- at least in our Mobile Web skin, Mercury.

I'll be back to advise as to which templates and images have been added/edited so you can fully explore what changes have been made.

A typical legends page

A typical canon page

Hey hey :)
So I've installed a switcher that works quite well in Mercury. Although it kinda looks like what they've got at PT Star Wars, its code fundamentals are significantly different. It works by having a template called {{Eras-mobile}} emplaced on each in-universe infobox. Since it was working quite well on a phone -- and it only works on phones -- I went ahead and emplaced it on every in-universe infobox. This will allow you to test it broadly, but also to have something in place by Thursday night's general release of The Last Jedi which works on the vast majority of your pages.
You can read more over at the template page, but I thought I'd just share a couple of live phone-grabs with you at right.
Lemme know if you find cases where it's not working, but I don't think you'll find too many.
Oh I've also re-classified all your infoboxes as infoboxes. If they're not classed as infoboxes, they can behave oddly on Mercury.
czechout@fandom    22:42: Tue 12 Dec 2017
I have to say that I don't have an immediate solution for the app issues, no. The app is sort of a separate beast from both the Desktop and Mercury. I don't have any great control over it. But I think you'll find that there are some exciting changes just over the horizon in 2018 that might better impact the way Wookieepedia looks on mobile apps. Stay tuned! I'll be sure to advocate for Wook's special circumstances in the new year!
czechout@fandom    23:03: Tue 12 Dec 2017

Evolving the infoboxes

Hey, in my search for a solution to the above switcher problem, I was made aware of a unique approach to Star Wars infoboxes that I wanted to share with you. A Czech user, Darth Daron, has started build work on something that's really quite lovely. It has the potential to get rid of the tabber Canon/Legends buttons and offer a switcher in the infobox as well.

It's just something to think about, and I'm not at all claiming that it might work "out of the box" here, but take a gander at this sandbox. I think you'll at least be intrigued by it.

Trying to solve app issues

Sorry about the temporary dysfunction of {{eras}}. I was trying to figure out a way to get it not to display in the app and applied a change that really should not have affected the general functionality of that template. I still can't really explain why my change should have so broadly affected that template. But it's fixed now and was only a problem for an hour or so.

Unfortunately, I really have no idea how to simply remove {{eras}} -- and its non-functional canon/legend tabs -- from the app. {{eras}} works fine on desktop, of course, and on mobile web it, properly, don't exist. But in the app it's both visible and doesn't work. Which sucks, because the new switcher works on the app, but is buried underneath non-functional buttons.

A workaround would be to move all legends pages into their own namespace (Legends:), remove the tabber solution entirely from the desktop and use the new switcher within the infobox. That way, it would work on all three platforms from the same place, and in the same way. But Cav says that's a big decision, and would likely require admin discussion. So, something to think about over Christmas. :)

In any case, you should find that {{eras}} does indeed work like you expect, once again.

More on the mobile switcher

Hey, so I made a li'l change to the mobile switcher today, and I wanted to get your feedback on it. So now if it encounters a page that's legends-only or canon-only, the switcher simply disappears, as can be seen at right. This is necessary because titling is somewhat inconsistent on the wiki. A page without a subpage can be either legends or canon; there's no real way to know from the title.

Since you guys have intentionally turned off {{eras}} on mobile by marking it as a navigation template, I figured that actually labelling a topic "legends" or "canon" -- when there was no counterpart -- wasn't that important on mobile. Have I misunderstood what you guys are looking for?
czechout@fandom    21:38: Thu 14 Dec 2017

Hey :) So I've been playing around with this {{Eras}} issue for the past few hours, and I've discovered some interesting things.
First, though, it's important to understand that all templates are classified in some way. If no admin here set the class, a bot did. And {{Eras}} has been a "Navigation" type template since well before the release of TFA in 2015. That classification makes a template disappear on Mercury -- so you haven't been rocking any icon associated with {{Eras}} on mobile until I started messing around with it today. I suspect that the reason you've never heard about this from any user is because it was never there in the first place.
Nevertheless, in the past couple of hours, I've tried all template classifications to arrive at the following conclusions:
  • With most template classifications, {{Eras}} will simply not appear at all.
  • With one classification type, "Infoicon", all the icons will appear, but they're useless. They just take you to the vignette page showing the image; they don't take you to the canon page for a legends article, nor do they tell you what the era is about. They just show you the picture on a page of its own.
  • In general, the reason the buttons aren't showing is because they're actually delivered to the desktop page in part via JavaScript. Mercury, our mobile skin, just doesn't handle JS. Plus, the JS specifies classes that don't exist in the Mercury skin, even if JS worked on Mercury. Moreover, the controlling Lua module adds quite a few CSS classes to the icons to make them work, and Mercury just doesn't accept CSS like that.
  • The only buttons you can leverage from {{Eras}} that will actually work are the canon/legends tabs. With the classification type "Design", those tabs will appear and be functional, but they're not on every page. I don't know why yet, but the question is whether it's useful to have the new canon/legends switcher in the infobox, and then a smaller repeat of that just underneath the infobox.
This means that showing the various desktop era icons would require significant recoding work, and may not be easily achieveable.
So, given all this, I think our focus needs to be just on having canon/legends labels. My question now is, do we need to have single-continuity pages labelled with the continuity they're from? Is it important, for instance, that Kylo Ren's page, on mobile, says "canon"? Or can we just leave it to the article itself to explain that?
As you ponder that, I'll sneak out to enjoy Ep VIII. MTFBWY. :)
czechout@fandom    01:47: Fri 15 Dec 2017
Heya! Hope you enjoyed the film! Today I installed a bit more code that will indeed say "Canon" on a page like Rose Tico and "Legends" on one like Keleman Ciro.

Lemme know whatcha think!
czechout@fandom    21:38: Mon 18 Dec 2017

Hello, that is correct – I noticed that the page has a lot of history, however, and in that case isn't it better to delete the page first and then start over with the new topic? That was my understanding of how to treat pages. NoahR9 First_Order.svgChat with me! 21:41, December 15, 2017 (UTC)

Hello this X-Mutant

Hey you sent me a message telling me if I had any questions I could talk to you. I would like to thank you for that message you also said "I hope you enjoy editing".

Really hope that that I'm not doing anything wrong. Because so far I don't think I am off to a good start on here. The reason why I say that is of the edits that I have made. My question is what should I do because I am thinking I am just only starting mess that will probably get me into trouble in the future.

If all I'm doing is making mess on here with editing that I am doing that just really brings me down. And I don't want to get the same sad feels about this wiki just like I do with my video games. I have stopped playing video games because it just feels I can't complete anything in the games without help. And after years of playing gaming systems from the 64, to the gamecube, gameboy, wii, ds, 3ds, xbox 360, ps3, wii u and xbox one people would think that I have gotten with some of the things in the games.

Failing missions, quest, levels in video games pluse getting crushed, killed, clobbered by almost every in the games makes me think I am not good with video games. I never blame the game, the programming or the gaming system I know that I make the mistakes and that bothers me. So far I haven't been having been enjoying editing like I am not enjoying video games this year. If all I do is make mistakes with my edits than is okay to ask for advice.

The reason why I am asking to talk to you because I am worried that I am going upset someone, anyone or probably a lot of people with what I have been doing. I already have one thing bring my mood down my games so the last thing I need is something else depressing me. I already feel like I can't do anything right the last thing I want is for that feeling to grow.

Send a response message as soon as your done reading this and when you have the time. I don't know maybe I'm worring over nothing people have told me that I do that to much. I just want to find someone who can turn things around for me so I can have fun on this wiki because if I don't get any help I fear it will be a rough road ahead of me here on Wookieepedia. User:X-Mutant (talk) 3:22, December 21, (UTC)

You have been very helpful and even though I worry to much but I'm going to cut back on what I have done on here because if I don't I think I will get a warning in the future.

The part about being "bold" almost everyone in my whole life has tried to get me to be that way. But I don't think that will ever happen almost my whole I have worried, quite, shy, nervous and scared. I have always been the type to keep a low profile and always tries to stay away from people.

I always walking with my head down and stay a good distance from huge groups of people pluse having a hood to always hide my face. So having a personality like that and because of the things that I have done here on this wiki that stuff probably don't go while together.

So anyway thank you for helping and trying if you send a response message after this I will respond but it might not help my dampened spirit. I think that is just who I will probably be my whole life. I will still be doing editing on Wookieepedia but just less of it so I won't get a warning about my activities, editing and work on the wiki.

The reason why I think that I will probably get a warning if I spend more time on is because of the editing that I did. I politely thank but with sorrow in my heart I will do less on here so that I won't get a warning in the future about the editing that I have done. Re: Probed articles

Duly noted. By the way, when last meeting priority went instead to the Inq maintenance page while skipping over articles that I made notes of, are those ones saved for after the maintenance page is all reviewed? Making sure that internally notes were made about those, though there's always the possibility of going back to the meeting 87 page itself to check. Hanzo Hasashi (talk) 03:19, February 25, 2018 (UTC)

  • Thanks. Ultimately hoping that it doesn't add too much work for items reviewed in individual meetings. I pretty much made it a mission to find as many problems as I can with any of the pre-2008 FAs, and every individual one of them I have found enough issues to save for some Inqmoot. :P I think Deena Shan may be the only one to be spared probation, though not sure if Green Tentacle addressing my notes alone is sufficient or if the Inq has to nonetheless review and give their formal thoughts. Hi. See you in Inqmoot 89 on March 24 at 4 PM ET! Imperators II(Talk) 12:48, February 26, 2018 (UTC)

Lo-Taren (Oh, I guess)

I had not realized that I had not checked in for two weeks. Didn't see the objections until yesterday, started them, figured I'd have some time to finish them, then as I working on it today I noticed that it had been killed. RIP me.

Although I do not tend to re-nominate things (Or at least, have yet to do so), in case it ever does come up again:

""The following dawn, Garnac officially endorsed the beginning of the next hunt." This kind of sounds like the prisoners they dropped off the previous day don't belong to the hunt he's now endorsing."

  • Yes, this is how the episode plays it. They're dropped off, Lo-Taren starts shooting in order to get them off the beach, and kills two of them. The next time we see the Trandos is the next morning when Garnac is saying some thing like "The hunt begins." So yes, given how the episode goes, it does not seem like Vadoo and Morgo are a part of the hunt that begins later in the episode.

Not sure if I fixed the backup links correctly either. They appear to work at first, but then the screen blanks out. Might be an issue with Wayback, though. --Clonehunter(Report your W.M.D.) 23:35, February 26, 2018 (UTC)

  • The last week for me has been especially busy. Illness, more work than usual, school, sidejobs. Given that my last edit was only a few days after the objections were posted I'm not sure how I missed the first week. I may give this one a second go simply because unlike the others there does not seem to be withstanding roadblock to finishing it. However, and I don't know where I saw this since I can't re-find it, but is there a wait period between nomination failures? I know there isn't really one when it comes to an article being shot down for a GA because it's long enough for a FA, but that's sort of a special issue. I may wait until Krix passes so I can have a blank nomination slate. Thanks. Also I think I see how the backup link thing works now. Thanks. --Clonehunter(Report your W.M.D.) 02:38, February 27, 2018 (UTC)
