- "Utooni would jump in a trash heap with a dianoga in it if it meant getting to the best salvage!"
- ―Sprocket
Utooni was the name taken by a pair of Jawa brothers[3] and scrappers[1] active following the fall of the Galactic Empire.[4] The two Jawas participated in the Hunters of the Outer Rim tournament on Vespaara.[1] As they were too small to compete, the Jawa stacked one atop the other's shoulders in order to fit the height requirement.[5] In the competition to win in the hopes of acquiring stuff, the Utooni brothers used an arsenal of oversized weaponry which they kept under their long cloak, but frequently argued about which weapon to use first.[3] Over the various fights in the arena, the Jawa brothers gained a rivalry against fellow competitor Dizzy and his droideka, as they always targeted the droid who Dizzy saw as family.[6]
Biography[]
- "So the first question is one that the audience has requested extensively - what are your individual names?"
(Unintelligible; sniffing noises)
"For those of you at home, Jawaese is not easy to learn for non-Jawas. Part of the language itself involves emitting and detecting certain scents. Hence in some cases, I am only able to offer limited translations." - ―L-X1 and Utooni
When the Kubaz Glikkin joined the ranks of the Hunters, he quickly noticed that his dual vibroblades had gone missing. As he searched for them, Utooni passed by, nonchalantly whistling and juggling the vibroblades to themselves. Glikkin immediately snatched his weapons back and insulted the Jawas in his native tongue. Glikkin brought the issue up to Arena co-owner Balada the Hutt, who proposed a scavenger hunt between the two thieves to compete in, with the winner receiving the Arena Master Thief title, delighting the three Hunters.[8]
As part of the hunt, Utooni stole one of fellow Hunter Grozz's most prized possessions, a plush doll that the Wookiee had crafted in his own image.[9]
During the scavenger hunt, Utooni sat down for an interview with L-X1, one of the Arena's announcers. However, Utooni entered the room holding tightly onto the Arena's trophy droid, TR0-F33, and L-X1 steadfastly refused to begin the interview until they released him. Utooni was reluctant, as TR0-F33 was on the scavenger hunt list, but acquiesced when L-X1 promised to inform Balada that the Jawas had captured him. L-X1's first question for the brothers was that of their true names. The duo readily answered but as their Jawaese names could not be translated into Basic, L-X1 continued to refer to them as Utooni, although their vague response to the meaning of that word frustrated her. They explained how they enjoyed taking things that had been left laying around, seemingly unaware that taking things that were laying around in someones pockets constituted theft. They went on to explain that their favorite acquisition was TR0-F33, but they would never sell him, and they began sobbing as they referred to him as their "pet." L-X1 lost her temper and the interview ended as Utooni ran out of the room after TR0-F33 and L-X1 ran out after Utooni.[7]
The scavenger hunt eventually resulted in a draw. As a tiebreaker, Balada declared that the Hunter that could claim Arena co-owner Daq Dragus' championship belt first would be the winner. The Hunters took off, with Utooni picking the lock on Daq's office door, but unfortunately for all involved, Dragus was still wearing the belt. He grabbed Utooni and Glikkin by the scruffs of their necks, dangled them near his open window and scolded them for the chaos they had caused during the scavenger hunt. He demanded that they settle their issue with a Pinnacle Event. Taking stock of their precarious position, the Hunters readily agreed.[10]
Shortly afterward, Glikkin crept up on Utooni at the training ground, vibroblades in hand. L-X1 ran to intervene, but Glikkin had only intended to bestow a compliment to Utooni. He sincerely praised Utooni's skill at thieving and fighting, humbly acknowledging that he had underestimated the Jawas. Utooni responded in kind, earnestly complimenting Glikkin's gear, specifically his Sinrich optical dephaser.[11]
Personality and traits[]
- "Okay, we will have to keep it at 'Utooni' for now. So - does the name have a particular meaning?"
"«Brothers.»"
"Utooni means brothers? Or, you are brothers?"
(Nods 'yes')" - ―L-X1 and Utooni
The true names of the individual Utooni brothers were unable to be translated to Basic from Jawaese. The pronunciation of their names in their native tongue involved a series of emitted scents and much sniffing to detect the scents.
The Jawaese word "Utooni" may have meant "brothers," although it was unclear if it actually meant that or if Utooni was simply affirming that they were brothers.[7]
