"As fascinating as this is, I don't like it either. We should be walking through ruins, but these buildings are almost pristine"
―Doctor Chelli Aphra[2]

Vaale was a city on the planet Dianth, constructed out of living bone. The city was designed by the Architects of Vaale, who created numerous other artifacts including the Rings of Vaale, which supposedly provided their wearer with great power. The living bone matter contained a security system set in place by the Architects which emitted frequencies that targeted brain waves. The security system went rogue, driving the population of Vaale mad and causing the collapse of Dianth's society.

The rogue archaeologist Doctor Chelli Aphra visited the city alongside a crew after the Shadow University student Detta Yao hired her to find the Rings of Vaale, but were pursued by mercenaries working for the House of Tagge scion Ronen Tagge, who also wished to acquire the artifacts. Aphra and her team managed to find one of the Rings, which was subsequently stolen by her associate Just Lucky, who had been working for Tagge. After Lucky and the mercenaries left Vaale, Tagge's fleet destroyed the city.

Description[]

"I had my droid run test on the bone matter comprising the city. It's alive. And it's singing, Emitting frequencies that target our brain waves."
―Okka[5]

Vaale's structures were made of "living bone."

Vaale was a city located on the planet Dianth and built by the Architects of Vaale. The walls were made out of living bone that caused the inhabitants of the city to go insane and cause a collapse of the city.[3] The walls contain artwork that described the history of the city. Vaale was made up of many large white buildings but also a network of tunnels and sewers. Located in the city was the Workshop of the Architects of Vaale[2] and the Architects' Mausoleum. Many traps laid across the city to prevent individuals from discovering the hidden secrets of the city.[4]

History[]

Early history[]

"Every legend about the Rings of Vaale mention a haunted city made of living stone and an ancient sect dedicated to guarding them."
―Eustacia Okka[3]
CurseOfVaale

Dianth fell to ruin because of the curse of the Rings of Vaale.

The architects create Vaale out of "living bone" matter[3] that also contained a security system.[5] According to legend, the curse from the Rings of Vaale were so powerful that they corrupted the city and the entire planet. Explorers who visited the planet and the city often returned mad if they ever returned at all.[3] At one point, the walls emitted a frequency that caused the population of Vaale to go mad and collapse Dianth's society.[5]

Imperial Era[]

"I hate to break the news to everyone, but this place is giving me the creeps."
―Just Lucky[2]

In 3 ABY,[1] Doctor Chelli Lona Aphra was hired by Detta Yao, a Shadow University student, to locate the rings.[3] When the crew arrived on Dianth, they were all in shock to discover the city was real. But while studying the "living bone" structures, a face leaped out at Detta Yao. As they continued exploring, a high-pitched sound rang throughout the city but only Just Lucky was effected by it. The group then realized they had lost Professor Eustacia Okka and went on a search for her.[2]

WorkshopOfVaale

Workshop of the Architects of Vaale

They found her in the Workshop of the Architects of Vaale, where there was a map of the rings but the workshop was located underneath the floor. The crew traveled down a staircase with art of the rings from the High Republic Era located on the walls. The workshop lied behind a large door that was locked. Once again, the high-pitched noise hurt Lucky's ears but then a mummified individual appeared and warned the crew to leave the cursed city before it was too late. The faces on the door started move and make noise too, under the influence of the rings. As they searched for a key to open the door, Yao believed she found one in a wall, but the set off a loud noise that hit the entire crew. But after destroying it, the floor gave way but only Okka fell through.[2] Krrsantan and Lucky arrived to help her.[4] But then the mercenaries of Ronen Tagge appeared and forced the crew at gunpoint to led them to the rings.[2] Aphra then revealed she was working with the Tagges. Krrsantan, Okka, and Lucky traveled through a tunnel and realized that the bones were fused with the walls to prevent them from being stolen.[4]

One of the mercenaries activated another trap, causing multiple large arms to reach out of the floor and grabbed some of the mercenaries. The other group was attacked by the mummified civilians but they quickly disappeared. They entered down a large corridor with multiple statues and other artifacts. Lucky once again heard the large pitched noise, with Okka realizing that they had finally reached their position under the Workshop.[4]

Vaale destroyed

Vaale destroyed by Tagge's fleet

Meanwhile, Aphra and Yao were thrown back by the arms and crashed at the entrance of the Architects' Mausoleum, the rings were created. One of the statues held the Ring of Fortune. The group rejoined with each other but Aphra discovered the Ring of Immortality was missing. The group got into an argument and Lucky revealed he was in charge of Tagge's mercenaries.[4]

Looking for a way to escape, Aphra and her group travelled through the sewers of the city and discovered that the walls emitted frequencies targeting their brain waves. Okka discovered that this was what drove the population of Vaale made instead of the rings. Eventually, the group was guided out of the city and arrived at the Ark Angel III. But all of the sudden, starfighters from Tagge's fleet arrived and destroyed the remains of lost city of Vaale.[5]
