The Viceroy of the Trade Federation was the senior executive position of the Trade Federation conglomerate. By the time of the Eriadu Conference in 33 BBY[1] the Sith Lord Darth Sidious had manipulated Nute Gunray's rise to the position, that would allow the megacorporation's invasion of the planet Naboo[3] in the following year,[2] Gunray served as Viceroy of the Trade Federation during the invasion[5] and, despite facing several trials in the Supreme Court,[4] kept the title during the subsequent Clone Wars. The Viceroy was killed on Mustafar[6] in 19 BBY by Sidious' new apprentice, Darth Vader.[2]

The Viceroy of the Trade Federation title first appeared through Nute Gunray in the 1999 film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, the first installment of the Star Wars prequel trilogy.[3]

"A Certain Point of View" — Star Wars Insider 200 states that the Eriadu trade summit disestablish the Directors of the Trade Federation in favor of the Viceroy and that took place 33 years prior to the events of Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope, which took place in 0 BBY according to Star Wars: Galactic Atlas. Therefore, the role of Viceroy of the Trade Federation must have been established in 33 BBY.
