The Vratix were a species of sentient insectoids from the planet Thyferra. They were the inventors of bacta, a gelatinous substance that encouraged the rapid healing of serious injuries.[1] The production of bacta gave Vratix an almost mystical pleasure. It had such an intoxicating effect on them that they almost felt the need to produce the substance.[2]

After discovering the healing properties of bacta, the Human settlers of Thyferra began to exploit the Vratix addiction. They encouraged them to produce more and more bacta, which they then sold to the general public. The Vratix eventually became a slave labor force, while the settlers made huge amounts of money.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

The Vratix were first mentioned in the new Star Wars canon in the 2019 reference book Ultimate Star Wars, New Edition.[1] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, Vratix were first mentioned in the roleplaying game article "The Business of Bacta," written by Michael Kogge and published in the third issue of the Star Wars Adventure Journal magazine in August 1, 1994.[3]
