Sandage was the first pilot overtaken by the human Anakin Skywalker, but eventually overtook his competitor Neva Kee before crashing into a sandcrawler off course during the third lap and ending up inthe Mos Espa medical center.
Biography[]
- "I see the contestants are making their way out on to the starting grid."
- ―Fodesinbeed Annodue commentating on Wan Sandage and the other podracers before the Boonta Eve Classic
Wan Sandage was a Devlikk podracer from the remote Outer Rim planet Ord Radama.[1] In 32 BBY,[4] he participated in the Boonta Eve Classic podrace on the desert planet Tatooine. As one of the less skilled participants, little was known about him at the time.[2] The Devlikk's podracer was pulled out onto the starting grid at the Mos Espa Grand Arena by a ronto, with Sandage starting in the farside position on the fifth and final row. A human carried Sandage's flag in the procession across the grid before the race began, with the Troig Fodesinbeed Annodue providing commentary on the racers.[3]
Once crime lord Jabba Desilijic Tiure signalled the start of the race, Sandage left the grid with the other racers, but remained at the back of the pack. He was the first competitor to be overtaken by the human racer Anakin Skywalker after Skywalker initially had engine trouble that prevented him from leaving the grid.[3] Sandage at some point overtook the racer Neva Kee and left him in last place before completing his second lap,[1] but in the middle of third lap,[5] Sandage flew off-course and collided with a Jawa sandcrawler, resulting in him failing to complete the race.[6] Sandage ended up in the medical center in the city of Mos Espa, where he was soon joined by fellow pilots Dud Bolt and Ark Roose.[1]
Personality and traits[]
Sandage was not a very good podracer.[2] He had green hair, tan skin, and red eyes.[1]
Equipment[]
During the Boonta Eve Classic, Sandage flew a podracer with TurboDyne 99-U engines that were green and tan in color.[7] The Devlikk's flag consisted of a large rectangular yellow flag with a thin tapered white flag both above and below it.[6]
Behind the scenes[]
Wan Sandage was created for the prequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace,[3] which released on May 19, 1999.[8] Concept art of Sandage was created by Terryl Whitlatch, who created a colored orthographic diagram of the Devlikk on September 9, 1996 and a sketch of Sandage's head and face on November 7 that year. Concept art of different headgear and neckwear for Sandage including goggles and an eyepatch were also created.[9] The film's art department crafted a detailed maquette of Sandage with an elaborate paint scheme, but as the character is not seen close-up in the film, Industrial Light & Magic only created a fairly low-resolution digital model of Sandage to be used in distant shots[10] were the Devlikk is visible in the cockpit of his vehicle.[3]
The name Sandage originally appeared as Count Sandage in George Lucas' rough[11] and first drafts[12] of the 1977 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, although the character did not make it into the final version of the film.[13] The name Wan Sandage then appears as early as Lucas's revised rough draft of the script for The Phantom Menace, which listed his homeworld as Umboo rather than Ord Radama.[9] In the current Star Wars canon, the name was first used in "Sebulba and Rival Pilots," and article published in the "Weapons & Uniforms" department of Star Wars Helmet Collection 17, a magazine published by De Agostini[14] on August 24, 2016.[15] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, Sandage appeared prior to the release of the film in its novelization by Terry Brooks,[16] which was released on May 3, 1999.[17]
