Wookiee Chieftain

A Wookiee Chieftain, also known as a Wookiee Elder, was a Wookiee with the ability to lead and to command troops on the battlefield. Chieftains also played roles in some government issues such as battles or war. Notably, they had the right to cancel the festivities of Life Day, the most important Wookiee holiday.^[1] At the time of the Galactic Republic, a council of venerated Elders accompanied Kashyyyk's representative to the Galactic Senate on Coruscant.^[2]

Merumeru was a Chieftain at the time of the Battle of Kashyyyk and, at 250 years old, was one of the youngest to have held the title.^[3] About two decades later, during the Galactic Civil War, the female Wookiee Ovarra acted as a Chieftain.^[4]
