Introduction and infobox

Infobox

  • All infobox material must be detailed in the article proper, with the following exceptions:
See Forum:CT:Utilizing Atlas grid coordinates
See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/March 7, 2020
  • Organizations in any character infobox that are inherently implied by a stated role (examples: Stormtrooper Corps does not need to be linked within a character article body if the article states that the character is a stormtrooper; Imperial Officer Corps does not need to be linked in the article body if the article states that the subject is an Imperial officer).
See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/July 25, 2020
  • The "owners" field of {{Armor}}, {{Device}}, and {{Weapon}} shall only be used for unique items
See Forum:CT:"Owners" field of the Weapon infobox, Wookieepedia:Mofferences/February 27, 2021
See Forum:CT:Infobox exclusivity for alternate calendar dates
  • No additional alternate name may be listed in the name field of the infobox, with the following exceptions:
    • The numerical designation of clone troopers (e.g. the infobox for Fives will feature CT-5555 written below his name) or their name if the article is titled after their number (e.g. if the clone preferred their designation, their number would be written first, with their name written below it)
    • Chiss core names (e.g. "Thrawn" for Mitth'raw'nuruodo)
    • Darth titles of Sith individuals (e.g. "Darth Vader" for Anakin Skywalker) or birth names for Sith individuals (e.g. "Jacen Solo" for Darth Caedus)
    • Droid names whose nicknames are not a mere phonetic pronunciation of their name (e.g. "Red" for R5-D4).
    • Mandalore titles of Mandalorian leaders (e.g. "Mandalore the Protector" for Canderous Ordo) or birth names for Mandalores (e.g. "Shae Vizla" for Mandalore the Avenger)
  • These articles may only list one such alternate name.
See Forum:CT:Alternate names in the infobox, Forum:CT:Clone trooper name discussion part 3, Forum:CT:Mandalore names/titles in the infobox
  • When denoting an item's cost in credits, use the term "credit" as standard rather than the credit symbol (AurebeshSans-Serif credit).
See Forum:CT:Standardizing the use of "Credits" in infoboxes, Forum:CT:Standardizing the use of "Credits" in infoboxes, part 2
  • The "Affiliations" field of infoboxes shall list sub-bullets to a maximum depth of one (example: *Galactic Empire **Stormtrooper Corps). This is done for aesthetic reasons with regard to article presentation in the Fandom skin.
  • For Star Wars Legends articles, if any infobox date field employs a BBY/ABY date, a corresponding GrS date may only be added to that field if the GrS month is known for a given event. For example, do not list Mara Jade's infobox birth date as "17 BBY (18)"; but do list Luke Skywalker's birth date as "19 BBY (16:5:24)". Additionally, when listing a corresponding GrS date when a BBY/ABY date is also being used, always place the GrS date in small text via the {{C}} template.
See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/March 4, 2018
  • Approximate dates shall be denoted using "c. 25 ABY" formatting rather than using the {{Circa}} template.
  • Infoboxes may not contain any field listing individual examples of an article subject, such as members of a species or organization.
See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/November 7, 2020
  • The "prev", "conc", and "next" fields of event infoboxes shall only be used for events that are relevant to the article's subject and are mentioned in the article's text.
See Forum:CT:Infobox-exclusivity of prev, conc, and next fields for conflicts/battles, Part 2

Article body

Coverage

Article bodies of Star Wars Legends articles will comprehensively cover all content from applicable officially licensed sources that Lucasfilm did not declare non-canon within the Legends continuity. Please see Wookieepedia:Canon policy#Reliable sources for a list of officially licensed sources considered applicable to the Legends continuity.

Canon and Legends mainspace articles shall not document content from unlicensed Star Wars "parody" projects (examples: Family Guy: "Blue Harvest," Spaceballs) unless there is a specific referential need in the article's "Behind the scenes" section. Licensed parody content, such as Phineas and Ferb: Star Wars and Robot Chicken: Star Wars, may be covered in mainspace articles, with content regarding pre-existing Canon and Legends subjects covered in the "Non-canon history" sections of articles' "Behind the scenes" sections, and original content covered on their own pages with {{Noncanon}} at the top of the pages.

See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/September 10, 2016, Forum:CT:Phineas and Ferb

Star Wars Tales and unlicensed sources

Star Wars Legends articles will comprehensively cover all non-contradictory stories from Star Wars Tales issues 120 in the article body. Content from Tales 1–20 stories that were referenced in no other Legends source must be clearly labeled with the following advisory tags:

 {{Talesstart}}
 ...
 {{Talesend}}

Star Wars Legends articles will comprehensively cover all relevant unlicensed sources within the article body. This content must be clearly labeled with the following advisory tags:

 {{Unlicensedstart}}
 ...
 {{Unlicensedend}}

Sectioning

In-universe sections

Articles on certain types of subject have an established layout. These are listed below.

Character articles

Character Articles

Character articles are to be organized using the following sections. Each of these sections may be subsectioned as necessary.
  1. Biography provides an account of the notable events in the character's life. The level of detail in this section is up to the individual author. However, a middle ground between succinct and lengthy is generally preferable. It is generally expected that this section will be divided into subsections on lengthy articles, though the appropriate sectioning of this is left to the author.
  2. Personality and traits describes personality traits evident in the source material and how these influence the character's behavior. Examples should be given where possible.
  3. Skills and abilities or Powers and abilities for Force-sensitive characters is intended to show any notable abilities possessed by the character. This section is particularly appropriate for Force-sensitive characters and can include any Force powers for which the character demonstrates an aptitude.
  4. Equipment can be used to give a brief description of any notable ships, weapons, or other equipment associated with the character.
Each of these sections may be further subdivided as appropriate.

Droid character articles

Droid Character Articles

Droid character articles are to be organized using the following sections. Each of these sections may be subsectioned as necessary.
  1. Biography provides an account of the notable events in the droid character's career. The level of detail in this section is up to the individual author. However, a middle ground between succinct and lengthy is generally preferable. It is generally expected that this section will be divided into subsections on lengthy articles, though the appropriate sectioning of this is left to the author.
  2. Characteristics describes personality traits evident in the source material and how these influence the droid character's behavior. Examples should be given where possible. Specific programming abilities and physical technical specifications are described here as well, subdivided as necessary.
  3. Equipment can be used to give a brief description of any notable ships or external weapons and equipment associated with the droid character.
Each of these sections may be further subdivided as appropriate.

Group and organization articles

Group and Organization Articles

Organization and group articles are to be organized using the following sections. Each of these sections may be subsectioned as necessary.

  1. Description details the structure and other properties of a group. Additional subsections can be included if enough information is available. Below are some suggestions for subsections.
    • A section on the ideology/purpose of the group, possible titles including Ideology, Politics, and Religion, describes the views of the group.
    • Organization (or a similar title such as Government) details the structure of the group.
    • Role (or a similar title such as Operations) covers what kind of missions the group, or members of the group, undertook.
    • Equipment (or a similar title such as Complement) details possessions of the group, in terms of tools, weapons, machinery, vehicles, and more.
    • Products describes merchandise an organization created, bought, and sold.
    • Skills and training covers what skills group members possessed and what training may have been provided for them to have received those skills while within the group.
    • Locations covers where the group operated, including aspects like headquarters, outposts, safehouses, and more.
  2. History chronicles the known history of the group in chronological order. Ideally, all appearances of the group in canon are described here.
  3. Members (or a similar title such as Commanders and crew, Leadership, Staff or Leaders and members) provides brief summaries of any individuals of particular importance that were part of, or led, the group.

Each of these three sections may be further subdivided as appropriate. Note: if anything in particular is of overwhelming significance concerning the group or organization, or a preponderance of information is available, a section of its own can be created.

Planet and moon articles

Planet Articles

Planet articles are to be organized using the following sections. Each of these sections may be subsectioned as necessary.

  1. Description will include any information on the characteristics of the planet itself, such as its location, its geological trends, its climate and ecosystem, and native vegetation. Also, any non-sentient fauna is to be described here. The key is to give a general overview of the planet and its characteristics.
    • Note: When a planet has particularly notable flora and fauna, an individual section can be created for such.
  2. History will cover all notable points in the planet's history. Individual periods and major events can receive subsections.
    • Note: Planet articles will not document chronological territorial affiliations unless the planet, moon, etc. is explicitly identified on a map as belonging to a given territory. For example, The Essential Atlas and The Essential Guide to Warfare document the many shifting territorial boundaries throughout Star Wars history on galactic maps. Unless a planet is explicitly identified on one of these maps as belonging to a territory, such as the Imperial Remnant or Darth Krayt's Galactic Empire, do not list the territory among the planet's affiliations in the article's infobox or body.
  3. Inhabitants includes a description of the planet's native or resident sentient species (where applicable) and any other notable inhabitants.
    • Note: If the planetary government is notably unique or of particular import, an individual section on it may be added. Furthermore, if the economy of the planet plays a significant role, it can be given its own section. Planetary culture and religion, apart from species culture, may also play a large role, and could then receive a section of its own, as well.
  4. Locations is set aside for notable specific locations on the planet's surface or in orbit, such as cities, bases, geological formations, and orbital facilities.

Each of these four sections may be further subdivided as appropriate. Note: if anything in particular is of overwhelming significance concerning the planet, or a preponderance of information is available, a section of its own can be created.

Starship and vehicle class articles

Starship and Vehicle Class Articles

Starship and vehicle class articles are to be organized using the following sections. Each of these sections may be subsectioned as necessary.

  1. Characteristics includes any descriptive information about the class, as well as any statistical information provided.
  2. Role encompasses the duties the vessel or vehicle type was designed and/or used for. Strengths and weaknesses in application are laid out here, as well.
  3. History covers the known operational history of the class, arranged in chronological order. Ideally, all appearances of the type in canon are described here.

Each of these three sections may be further subdivided as appropriate. Note: if anything in particular is of overwhelming significance concerning the class, or a preponderance of information is available, a section of its own can be created.

Individual Starship and Vehicle Articles

Individual starship and vehicle articles are to be organized using the following sections. Each of these sections may be subsectioned as necessary.

  1. Description contains all the details of the design of the ship or vehicle.
  2. History chronicles the known history of the craft in chronological order. Ideally, all appearances of the type in canon are described here.
  3. Commanders and crew (or a similar title such as Owners and operators) provides brief summaries of any individuals of particular import that owned, commanded, or crewed the vessel or vehicle.

Each of these three sections may be further subdivided as appropriate. Note: if anything in particular is of overwhelming significance concerning the ship or vehicle, or a preponderance of information is available, a section of its own can be created.

Sentient species articles

Sentient Species Articles

Sentient species articles are to be organized using the following sections. Each of these sections may be subsectioned as necessary.
  1. Biology and appearance deals with the physical characteristics of the species. This includes descriptions of both their physical, instinctual and mental abilities, with particular emphasis on unique factors.
  2. Society and culture deals with the sociological organization of the species, including such features as language, temperament, and family and societal structures.
  3. History covers the major historical events of the species on its homeworld. This includes such events as wars, discovery by the galactic community, and other important epochs.
  4. [Species] in the galaxy provides an overview of the species' involvement in the galactic community outside of its homeworld, with particular emphasis on species trends and notable individuals. Depending on the available information, this section in particular may be incorporated into the earlier sections.
Each of these four sections may be further subdivided as appropriate.

Non-sentient and semi-sentient species articles

Non-Sentient and Semi-Sentient Species Articles

Non-sentient and semi-sentient species articles are to be organized using the following sections. Each of these sections may be subsectioned as necessary.
  1. Biology and appearance deals with the physical characteristics of the species. This includes descriptions of both their physical, instinctual and mental abilities, with particular emphasis on unique factors.
  2. Behavior (and intelligence) deals with the behavior and organization of the species, including such features as temperament along with societal, relational, reproductive and habitual characteristics. Any discussion on potential sentience or semi-sentience should be included in this section; Addition of "and intelligence" can be used in such articles to further explain the discussion.
  3. History covers the major historical events of the species on its homeworld. This includes such events as wars, discovery by the galactic community, and other important epochs.
  4. [Species] in the galaxy provides an overview of the species' involvement in the galactic community outside of its homeworld, with particular emphasis on species trends and appearances. Depending on the available information, this section in particular may be incorporated into the earlier sections.
Each of these four sections may be further subdivided as appropriate.

Battle, mission, and duel articles

Battle Articles

Battle articles are to be organized using the following sections. Each of these sections may be subsectioned as necessary.
  1. Prelude gives a brief description of the events leading up to the event as information is available. The level of detail in this section is up to the author, but should not take away from the article's subject of the actual event.
  2. The battle describes the event from all related source material. All information should be written from a neutral perspective, with none of the narrative focusing exclusively on the perspective of one side of the conflict. Alternatively, this section can be renamed to more appropriately reflect on the article's name.
  3. Aftermath can be used for any information related to the event that took place after its conclusion as it is available. As with the Prelude, however, the level of detail should not take away from the article's subject, which is the event itself.
Each of these sections may be further subdivided as appropriate. Note: if something else of significance concerning the event is relevant, a section of its own can be created.

Force power articles

Force Power Articles

Force power articles are to be organized using the following sections. Each of these sections may be subsectioned as necessary.
  1. Description gives a detailed description on what the power is and does.
  2. Applications describes how and why the power is used.
  3. Users details the specific instances of the power's use, and by whom.
Each of these sections may be further subdivided as appropriate. Note: if something else of significance concerning the Force power is relevant, a section of its own can be created.

Weapons, armor, technology, and equipment articles

Weapons, Armor, Technology, and Equipment Articles

Weapons, armor, technology, and equipment articles are to be organized using the following sections. Each of these sections may be subsectioned as necessary.
  1. Description will include any information on the characteristics of the item, such as design, utilization, and variants.
  2. History covers the known use of the item, arranged in chronological order. Ideally, all appearances of the item in canon are described here. Also included are users of the item, detailing the specific instances of the item's use, and by whom.
Each of these sections may be further subdivided as appropriate. Note: if something else of significance concerning the item is relevant, a section of its own can be created.

Stub

The stub template, if applicable, is placed immediately before the Behind the scenes section.

Behind the scenes (notice the capitalization)

The "Behind the scenes" section (notice the capitalization) details the development of an in-universe subject from a real-world, out-of-universe perspective. This section may discuss a number of varying topics, including but not limited to a subject's origin, actor portrayal information, significant additions made to a subject's in-universe continuity, and storyline contradictions affecting a subject's in-universe continuity. The following is a more detailed list of potential "Behind the scenes" topics:

  • Origin of subject: In what Star Wars project did the subject first appear or was first mentioned, first pictured, or first named? Was the subject named after a real-world person or based upon a real-world subject or event? For film articles, detail a subject's real-world filming location.
  • Portrayal information: For character articles, detail which actor(s)/actress(es) portrayed the subject in films, television series, video games, radio dramatizations, etc.
  • Canon development: Chronicle a subject's development through Star Wars continuity in different source material. Discuss any significant changes made to a subject, including retcon information. For example, Boba Fett's Legends continuity was heavily retconned with the release of Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones. How did this change in his character's background affect previously released stories?
  • Contradictions: Detail any significant contradictions affecting a subject's continuity. Were any stories rendered non-canon by contradictory higher canon sources?
  • Authorial intent: Authors occasionally release statements outside of their published stories to detail information they intended to convey in their projects without necessarily being spelled out in a given source.

Publication dates

All articles shall document the real-world publication date(s) of the source(s) in which the article subject was first released, named, and/or pictured. A full date (example: January 1, 2020) should generally be provided for sources that are part of a series, while only the year should be provided for standalone sources and sources that are part of a longer-running series, such as a book trilogy or video-game series.

This means that films, novels, video games, reference books, card sets, and roleplaying or tabletop game products should only provide a publication year, while comic-book issues, television episodes, and magazine issues should provide a full date. The exception to this rule is when two sources are being discussed in tandem. In such a case, the month and/or full date may be provided as necessary, particularly if both sources were released in the same year.

Non-canon material

  • For Legends articles, material that Lucasfilm declared to be non-canon within the Legends continuity, including Infinities stories, certain cut content, and material irreconcilably contradicted by higher canon sources, will be covered exclusively in the "Behind the scenes" section. Cut content from Star Wars Legends sources that was not referenced in other source material was considered non-canon. The only exception to cut content are the deleted scenes of the six films of the Star Wars original trilogy and prequel trilogy. According to Leland Chee, deleted film scenes that were publicly released were G-canon in the Legends continuity "unless they conflict with something else seen in the films or if the reasoning behind deleting the scene keeps it from being continuity."
  • The "Behind the scenes" section need not document any content from unlicensed Star Wars "parody" projects (examples: Family Guy: "Blue Harvest," Spaceballs) unless there is a specific referential need.
See Forum:CT:Non-canon Legends content, Wookieepedia:Mofferences/September 10, 2016, Forum:CT:Phineas and Ferb

Article indexing

Appearances

Articles on topics within a specific continuity should only list appearances that are fall under that specific continuity. For example, the Canon version of the Jedi Order article should not list issues of Star Wars: Republic or the video game Star Wars: The Old Republic, and the Legends version of the Anakin Skywalker article should not list Tarkin or Lords of the Sith.

See Forum:CT:MOS and LG updates

Wookieepedia treats the film novelizations and junior film novelizations of the Star Wars original trilogy and prequel trilogy and the Star Wars: The Clone Wars film novelization as non-canon Legends material. Therefore, Canon articles will not list these novelizations within the Appearances section.

See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/June 29, 2014
  • Bulleted list of films, novels, comics, cartoons, roleplaying adventures, and computer games that the subject has appeared in
  • These are de facto references or sources, but they are listed separately because they are in-universe
  • Includes even the smallest mentions in dialogue, narration, or visual appearance
  • For novels, make reference to the actual book, not the trilogy.
  • Comic books will be listed strictly by individual issue. Do not list comic story arcs, even if a subject appears in every issue of the arc.
  • Webcomics or manga released online in short individual chapters do not have articles for individual issues and should be listed by the overall series instead of any trade paperbacks collecting the issues.
  • Format: name of title only, e.g.:
  • Appearances should be sorted in order of in-universe chronology, with earlier sources listed before later ones.
    • Use the timeframe of the beginning of the source's "main events" (defined below) for this purpose.
    • For sources that take place in a short timeframe, sort by the beginning of the source's events.
    • For sources that span large timeframes in-universe, use the timeframe of the beginning of the source's "main events" (defined below) for this purpose.
    • Even if a subject appears in a source at a date different from its main events, sort the source by the time of its main events in the "Appearances" section.
See Forum:CT:Manga volumes - revisited

For the purposes of ordering the narratives chronologically in the "Appearances" section, a source's "main events" is defined as follows:

  • For sources without prologues, epilogues, flashbacks, flash-forwards, interludes, or multiple interwoven timeframes; the main events are the events of the narrative.
  • For sources with prologues, epilogues, flashbacks, or flash-forwards, we consider the "main events" to exclude those segments of the narrative.
    • Example: Queen's Shadow has a prologue set in 32 BBY, an epilogue set in 19 BBY, and main events set in 28 BBY. Sort Queen's Shadow as 28 BBY in the Appearances section of articles even those which were only mentioned or only appeared in its epilogue or prologue.
  • For sources with multiple timeframes, a timeframe labeled as "now" or "present" shall be considered to form the "main events" of that narrative over other timeframes.
    • Example: Thrawn: Alliances has a timeframe labeled "then" taking place in 19 BBY and a "now" timeframe taking place around 2 BBY. The "main events" are considered to take place in the "now" timeframe. Therefore, even though Padmé Amidala's appearance in that novel takes place in 19 BBY, Thrawn: Alliances should be sorted as 2 BBY in the Appearances section of her article.
  • For sources whose main events span a large time frame, even factoring in the above two stipulations, we use the earliest chronological point of those “main events” for this purpose.
    • Example: Rebel Rising, which begins c. 13 BBY and ends 0 BBY. Sort the novel as 13 BBY in the Appearances section. (Jyn's time in prison on Wobani prior to the end of the novel is considered a "flash-forward" for this purpose.)
    • Example: Star Wars Battlefront II, which portrays events ranging from 32 BBY to c. 34 ABY. Sort the video game as 32 BBY in the Appearances section; even on articles such as Ben Solo (who was born in 5 ABY).
See Forum:CT:Clarifying the Appearances section in the Layout Guide

Audiobooks

  1. Audiobooks should be listed in the Appearances section, after the book that they are adapting, and ordered by publication date in the case of multiple audiobooks.
    • Audiobook editions that are not commercial releases, such as the accessibility versions published by Talking Book Publishers, should not be listed in the Appearances.
    • Audiobooks of story anthologies should use {{StoryCite}} to list the specific short story from the audiobook, and be listed immediately following the story listing from the text version of the anthology.
  2. When multiple audiobook editions of a single story are listed, and they do not all share the same publisher, differentiate between editions by specifying the audiobook's publisher within {{C}}.
  3. When multiple audiobook editions of a single story are listed, and they share the same publisher, differentiate between editions by whether or not they are abridged, and then differentiate by publication year:
  4. Audiobook editions need not differentiate if they do not compete for the same title (example: Heir to the Empire: The 20th Anniversary Edition audiobook).
See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/July 25, 2020, Forum:CT:Non-commercial audiobook versions, Forum:CT:Using Shortstory with audiobooks

Template usage

The {{ID}} template may be used to denote when an appearance uses an alternate name for a subject.

  • Common usage examples include:
    • Misspellings (example: (as Dack Ralter))
    • Indirect appearances (example: (Indirect appearance only) (as snowspeeder))
    • Call signs used in conjunction with {{Imo}} (example: (Indirect mention only) (as Rogue Eleven))
    • Ambiguous proper-noun references (example: Galaxy Guide 2: Yavin and Bespin refers to the Olys Corellisi language using the phrase "from the Corellian"; thus, (as Corellian))
  • {{ID}} may not be used:
    • If the subject is referred to by the actual Wookieepedia article title or an abbreviation, alternate capitalization, nickname, or shortened version of its name (example: Jek Tono Porkins vs. Jek Porkins)
    • For names already presented in the article using {{1stID}}
    • On articles with conjectural titles
    • For general phrases and terms (examples: (as Rebel soldier) for a named character; (as attack on Hoth) for Battle of Hoth)

Note: {{C}} may not be used in substitution of {{ID}} or to circumvent the listed usage rules.

See Forum:CT:Template:ID usage

Non-canon appearances

An article subject's non-canon appearances will be listed in a subsection of the Appearances section titled "Non-canon appearances." This subsection will list non-canon appearances in in-universe chronological order, regardless of any relationship between stories, or lack thereof (example: LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga shares no connection with Star Wars: Tag & Bink, but they are listed together nonetheless).

This section will not list unlicensed Star Wars "parody" projects that were created entirely or primarily outside of Lucasfilm's purview, such as Family Guy: "Blue Harvest," and Spaceballs.

This subsection should also include content such as Star Wars: Visions, which was expressly created to not conform to the canon continuity but has not been outright declared non-canon. The {{Ambig}} template should be used to denote such appearances.

See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/September 10, 2016, Forum:CT:Handling Visions, Forum:CT:Phineas and Ferb

Mediacat

When one image and/or sound file on Wookieepedia features the article's subject, a corresponding category may be created. If there are two or more images and/or sound files, corresponding categories must be created. These must be linked to via the {{Mediacat}} template unless the media category features only one file that belongs to the article's continuity and the file is already presented in the article. The template ideally shall be placed immediately below the title of the "Appearances" section (or the "Sources" section in the absence of an "Appearances" section) of the respective article. If the template interferes with the presentation of media titles in the aforementioned sections, it shall be placed immediately below the subsequent section of the article ("Sources" or, ultimately, "Notes and references"). Finally, if an infobox on an article with an "External links" section would interfere with the placement of the Mediacat template in "Notes and references," the template shall instead be placed in "External links."

See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/March 7, 2020, Wookieepedia:Mofferences/July 25, 2020, Forum:CT:Mediacat for single-image categories, Forum:CT:Single-image categories, Forum:CT:Mediacat in External links

Sources

The Sources section is a bulleted list of officially licensed Star Wars reference material typically presented from a non-narrative, "out-of-universe" perspective. Common examples include West End Games and Wizards of the Coast sourcebooks (ex: Shadows of the Empire Sourcebook, The Clone Wars Campaign Guide), reference books (ex: The New Essential Chronology, The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia), Star Wars Insider articles, StarWars.com encyclopedic entries (ex: Databank, Encyclopedia, and New Databank), and other official non-fiction sources. Note, however, that while the Sources list includes items that are published as real-world canon reference material, many of these sources are nonetheless written as though by an "in-universe" author, such as historian Voren Na'al.

General rules

  • Mentions of an in-universe subject in any non-fiction material released after the April 25, 2014, establishment of the separate canon and Star Wars Legends continuities is to be listed in sources based upon the canon status of media it is mentioned in relation to. This applies to all non-fiction articles in Star Wars Insider magazine starting with Star Wars Insider 150. All prior Star Wars Insider articles up to and including those in Star Wars Insider 149 are to be listed exclusively on Star Wars Legends articles with the exception of articles mentioning canon exclusive media like Star Wars Rebels that was in production prior to the Legends announcement.
  • Star Wars Blog posts are only listed in the Sources section if they contain unique canonical information. Other Blog posts may be listed in the "External links" section as appropriate.
See Forum:CT:In-universe Layout Guide General Rules rewrite

Template usage

The Sources list identifies certain continuity developments for a given subject, such as when a subject was first mentioned in canon, first identified by name, or first pictured. The following templates are used for this purpose: (First mentioned), (First identified as [Subject name]), and (First pictured). Note the following specifics for determining when to use these templates:

  • Sources templates work in conjunction with Appearances list templates
  • If an article uses both (First appearance) and (First mentioned), that means the "mention" came first. An article will not use (First mentioned) if the "appearance" came first.
  • {{1stm}} may be used to specify that a subject's first mention was featured in multiple sources simultaneously (example: (First mentioned, simultaneous with Star Wars: The Force Awakens: The Visual Dictionary)). When using this template to specify multiple simultaneous items, the template shall only be listed once and on the first applicable item in the Sources list. See Afterburner#Sources as an example.
  • (First identified as [Subject name]) and (First pictured) are primarily used if a subject was first identified by name or pictured in a Sources list item subsequent to the subject's first appearance. For example, Gial Ackbar's first name was revealed in The Essential Guide to Warfare subsequent to the character's appearance in Return of the Jedi. Therefore, his Sources list is formatted like so: *The Essential Guide to Warfare (First identified as Gial)

The (Mentioned only) tag may not be used in the Sources list, as all Sources list items are "mentioned only" by default. The (Indirect mention only) tag may be used, however. Additionally, items in the Sources list typically should never use the (First appearance) tag, which is primarily used in the Appearances list. Other templates may be used as necessary to denote certain specifics, such as {{C}} (for manual notation), (Picture only), (Quote only), (Cover only), (In flashback(s)), and (Appears in hologram). See a full list of these templates here.

The {{ID}} template may be used to denote when a source uses an alternate name for a subject.

    • Ambiguous proper-noun references (example: Galaxy Guide 2: Yavin and Bespin refers to Olys Corellisi using the phrase "from the Corellian"; thus, (as Corellian))
  • {{ID}} may not be used:
    • If the subject is referred to by the actual Wookieepedia article title or an abbreviation, alternate capitalization, nickname, or shortened version of its name (example: Jek Tono Porkins vs. Jek Porkins)
    • For names already presented in the article using {{1stID}}

Non-canon sources

An article subject's non-canon sources will be listed in a subsection of the Sources section titled "Non-canon sources." This subsection will list non-canon sources chronologically by real-world publication date.

Succession box

Succession boxes serve two purposes: to list the time period for which an individual held a certain post/title, and to provide links to the next known predecessor and/or successor. Due to the tendency of contributors to insert speculation and fanon into succession boxes, part of the Wookieepedia community dislikes them. To avoid issues and disputes, it is best to follow these "do nots":

  • Do not insert succession boxes for titles that were unique to a certain individual and, therefore, result in no predecessors or successors. The same applies if the individual is the only known holder of the title.
  • Do not insert succession boxes if the individual's position in the succession sequence is unclear. This applies, for instance, for such out-of-chronology Dark Lords of the Sith as Tulak Hord and Darth Andeddu.
  • Do not insert succession boxes for something that is not a proper title. For example, a succession box for Palpatine where the title is "Secret de facto leader of the Separatists" (this is a real precedent on Wookieepedia) is most likely to be deleted.

All succession boxes should be contained within two templates: {{Start box}} and {{End box}}. This ensures that there are no line breaks within succession boxes. Within the {{Succession box}}, there are six possible fields to insert information, all of which must be sourced:

  • title: This field is for the title of the succession box. It is required.
  • years: This field is for the years the position was held or the events occurred. Please limit this to one tenure, and repeat succession boxes as necessary. This field is also required.
  • before: This field is for the nearest known predecessor. See below for conditions.
  • before-years: This field is for the years of the nearest known predecessor.
  • after: This field is for the nearest known successor. See below for conditions.
  • after-years: This field is for the years of the nearest known successor.

If the individual was the first (last) person to bear a certain title, the "before" input ("after" input) should list "None" without any punctuation. If there are no known predecessors/successors, the corresponding fields should be left blank. However, if there are some known predecessors/successors, the section should read "Eventually <name of the chronologically nearest individual>". (Example: Darth Revan's immediate predecessor as Dark Lord of the Sith is unknown; therefore, the succession box reads "Eventually Exar Kun".)

In contrast, "Unknown" should not be used in the dates of succession boxes. (Example: "Unknown–0 ABY" should only be "—0 ABY.") See Wookieepedia:Manual of Style#Hyphens and dashes for more information.
