This page or section is an official policy on Wookieepedia.

It has wide acceptance among editors and is considered a standard that everyone must follow. Please use the Consensus track to propose changes to this policy.

This Layout Guide is an official guide as to how an in-universe article should be structured. Feel free to discuss the Layout Guide on the talk page.

Top template

  • The Top template should be placed at the top of every in-universe article. Depending on parameters added to the template, Top will insert navigation symbols and the continuity indicator into the title bar of an article, display tabs linking to an article's counterpart in the alternate continuity, and modify various other aspects of an article, such as its displayed title and the table of contents.
  • The following order should be used for parameters on the template:
    1. Article status. These are to show if an article has previously been reviewed and approved as a status article, so should only be used if an article has previously passed a Featured, Good, or Comprehensive article nomination. These parameters should only be added or modified by members of the Inquisitorius, AgriCorps, or EduCorps. Status parameters are: "fa" (if the article is a Featured article), "ffa" (if the article used to be a Featured article but has since been delisted by the Inquisitorius), "ga" (if the article is a Good article), "fga" (if the article used to be a Good article but has since been delisted by the AgriCorps), "ca" (if the article is a Comprehensive article), and "fca" (if the article used to be a Comprehensive article but has since been delisted by the EduCorps). Only the most recent applicable parameter should be used, so if a Good article had its status removed but later became a Featured article, it should only use "featured."
    2. Protection level. These are to show if an article has been protected by an Administrator. Articles should only have one parameter for the level of edit protection, although articles can have both edit and move protection, in which case the edit protection should come before the move protection. Protection parameters are: "fprot" (full protection), "sprot" (semi-protection), "ssprot" (super-semi-protection), and "mprot" (move protection).
    3. Continuity label. By default, Top displays an article as canon. If an article is non-canon, "noncanon" should be used. If an article is Legends, the Legends banner is automatically displayed if an article has "/Legends" in its title, a canon counterpart with "/Canon" in its title, or if the parameter "canon=" is used in Top. If a Legends article does not fit any of these criteria, "leg" should be used to display the Legends banner.
    4. Continuity tabs. If a subject exists in both continuities under the same name, with those articles only being disambiguated via a "/Legends" or "/Canon" suffix, their tabs will automatically link the two articles together. However, if two counterpart articles have different names, the canon article needs to use "legends=LEGENDS ARTICLE TITLE" and the Legends article "canon=CANON ARTICLE TITLE" to link the articles together. If two articles in different continuities share the same name but are not counterparts, "hide=1" should be used to remove the tabs system.
    5. Title formatting. The title of an article can be formatted through Top; for example, to add italicization. However, Top should not be used to modify the title text itself, only format it. The primary parameter is "title=FORMATTED TITLE," although "title2=FORMATTED TITLE" should be used as well if part of an article's title contains parentheses. "title" will modify all non-parenthesized elements of the title, and "title2" will modify all parenthesized elements. If the formatted title contains the entirety of the original title, PAGENAME should be used in lieu of typing out the title. For example, Executrix should use "title=PAGENAME," not "title=Executrix." "notitle=1" should be used to prevent the automatic shrinking of text inside parentheses on pages where parentheses are part of the in-universe title (e.g. How to Get Banned (Have a Mind)).
    6. Table of contents. Use "notoc=1" in Top to remove an unwanted table of contents. The table of contents should only be removed if an article has no in-universe prose sections (e.g. "History" or "Powers and abilities"). This means articles that have content sections other than "Behind the scenes," such as "History" or "Powers and abilities," should not remove their table of contents, whereas articles whose only prose section is "Behind the scenes" should remove their table of contents.

Hypothetical complete order of IU Top template:

Note: In-universe articles may not use parameters pertaining to Legends publishing eras in the Top template. Those parameters may only be used on out-of-universe articles.

See Forum:CT:Era tags, Forum:CT:MOS and LG updates, Forum:CT:Eras and Displaytitle, Wookieepedia:Mofferences/July 25, 2020, Wookieepedia:Mofferences/February 27, 2021

Otheruses or Youmay tags

Example:

Katarn

Another example:

the type of warship

Spoiler tag

A spoiler tag on an article alerts users to any plot spoilers from new sources. See Wookieepedia:Spoilers for more information.

Example:

Spoiler

  • This header template is to be used at the tops of articles to indicate that a given article contains spoilers from a certain product.
  • See Template:Spoiler

Example:

Moviespoiler

  • This template should be used on articles for subjects original to major movie releases such as the sequel trilogy or the Star Wars Anthology Series as well as their directly related material, such as novelizations. Articles about subjects not original to major movie releases but contain spoilers from them will continue to use Spoiler.
  • See Template:Moviespoiler

Maintenance templates

Example:

Citation

Header templates

Example:

Noncanon

  • These tags are used to indicate an article's level of canonicity, or if an article is about a subject from a cancelled or future source.
  • See Category:Header templates.

Infobox

Example (for an article about a Jedi character):

  • Used to present vital statistics of subject. Various infoboxes can be accessed by using the standard preloads just below the "Save page" button.
  • See Wookieepedia:Template messages/Infoboxes and Category:Infobox templates
  • All infobox material must be detailed in the article proper, with the following exceptions:
    • The "prev," "conc," and "next" fields of event infoboxes, which are not necessarily relevant to the article
See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/November 11, 2012
See Forum:CT:Utilizing Atlas grid coordinates
See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/March 7, 2020
  • Organizations in any character infobox that are inherently implied by a stated role (examples: Stormtrooper Corps does not need to be linked within a character article body if the article states that the character is a stormtrooper; Imperial Officer Corps does not need to be linked in the article body if the article states that the subject is an Imperial officer).
See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/July 25, 2020
  • The "owners" field of Armor, Device, and Weapon shall only be used for unique items
See Forum:CT:"Owners" field of the Weapon infobox, Wookieepedia:Mofferences/February 27, 2021
  • Conjecturally-titled articles will always include parenthetical descriptors in the infobox name field as standard; parenthetical descriptors will be excluded from the infobox name field for articles with canonical names
See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/February 12, 2012
  • When denoting an item's cost in credits, use the term "credit" as standard rather than the credit symbol (AurebeshSans-Serif credit).
See Forum:CT:Standardizing the use of "Credits" in infoboxes, Forum:CT:Standardizing the use of "Credits" in infoboxes, part 2
  • When listing multiple items in a single infobox field, including cascading items, use bullets to offset each item, including the first item listed. Do not use blank indentations. Additionally, the "Affiliations" field of infoboxes shall list sub-bullets to a maximum depth of one (example: *Galactic Empire **Stormtrooper Corps). This is done for aesthetic reasons with regard to article presentation in the Fandom skin.
See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/June 29, 2014
See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/March 4, 2018
  • Articles should not contain empty infoboxes. An empty infobox is defined as one in which no fields can be filled out other than the name of the subject due to limited information. Such infoboxes should be removed from the article until such time as more information can be added.
See Forum:CT:Empty infoboxes
  • For Star Wars Legends articles, if any infobox date field employs a BBY/ABY date, a corresponding GrS date may only be added to that field if the GrS month is known for a given event. For example, do not list Made Jade's infobox birth date as "17 BBY (18)"; but do list Luke Skywalker's birth date as "19 BBY (16:5:24)". Additionally, when listing a corresponding GrS date when a BBY/ABY date is also being used, always place the GrS date in small text via the C template.
See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/March 4, 2018
  • Approximate dates shall be denoted using "c. 25 ABY" formatting rather than using the Circa template.
  • Infoboxes may not contain any field listing individual examples of an article subject, such as members of a species or organization.
See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/November 7, 2020

Main image

  • Images used in infoboxes will be scaled to 250px (the minimum size to fit the infobox width in desktop view) for all infoboxes except conflict infoboxes (battles, wars, etc.), which use either 300px, 350px, or 400px, depending on specific template size. Larger default sizes are identified on the respective template pages. Images smaller than the default infobox size should not be scaled up.
See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/June 23, 2013
  • Main infobox images shall be at least 400px in width whenever possible. This is done to accommodate the infobox's minimum width on most mobile devices in vertical view. Note that conflict infobox images do not currently show in mobile skin.
See Forum:CT:Infobox image size for mobile skin

Opening quote

Example:

  • An opening quote is welcome for almost any type of article.
  • Quotes can be said by the article's subject, or said by someone else about the article's subject.
  • Do not use links within a quote, unless it is the only mention in the article of a certain subject.

Introduction

Articles shall only have an introduction section, commonly called an "intro," if the article body reaches 165 words in length, not counting the "Behind the scenes" section or any other content (infobox, captions, quotes, etc.). Such articles will then employ sectioning in the article body.

Article body

Article bodies of Star Wars Legends articles will comprehensively cover all content from applicable officially-licensed sources that Lucasfilm did not declare non-canon within the Legends continuity. Please see Wookieepedia:Canon policy#Reliable sources for a list of officially-licensed sources considered applicable to the Legends continuity.

Canon and Legends mainspace articles shall not document content from Star Wars "parody" projects (examples: Family Guy: "Blue Harvest," Phineas and Ferb: Star Wars, and Robot Chicken: Star Wars) unless there is a specific referential need in the article's "Behind the scenes" section.

Example (for an article about a Character):

Joe Bloggs was... (insert introductory sentence or paragraph)

Biography
Early days
...
...
...

Clone Wars
...

Duel with the Dark Lord
...

Back from the dead
...

  • headings and subheadings are usually not required for very small articles.

Images

Example:

  • Images should be placed where they are most relevant and should not interrupt the flow or the aesthetics of the article.
  • Placing them immediately underneath a heading or subheading usually works quite well.
  • Images should typically alternate from the right-side to the left-side. If there is a long infobox at the start, multiple images can be left aligned until the infobox ends.
  • Image caption punctuation (i.e., a full stop, or period) is determined by whether the caption uses a complete sentence. Example: "Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight" does not receive a full stop, whereas "Luke Skywalker was a Jedi Knight." does.
See Forum:CT:Punctuation in image captions
  • Images placed in articles must be as high quality as possible, as source availability and technical restraints permit. For example, certain leeway may be granted to video game screenshots, which present particular difficulty for obtaining high-resolution images.
See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/March 6, 2016
  • Images are to be formatted for ideal presentation in the Fandom skin, also known as Oasis.
See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/March 4, 2018

Quotes

Example:

…he's my brother.

  • In addition to the introductory quote, further quotes may be used throughout an article.
  • Although quotes may be placed in the body of the article, a maximum of one quote is allowed only at the beginning of each section.
  • Quotes are included "as-is", with the original spelling and formatting found in the source of the quote. In the case of a typo or other error, [sic] may be included to indicate that the error is from the original source and not the article.

Star Wars Tales and unlicensed sources

Star Wars Legends articles will comprehensively cover all non-contradictory stories from Star Wars Tales issues 120 in the article body. Content from Tales 1–20 stories that were referenced in no other Legends source must be clearly labeled with the following advisory tags:

Talesstart
...
Talesend

Star Wars Legends articles will comprehensively cover all relevant unlicensed sources within the article body. This content must be clearly labeled with the following advisory tags:

Unlicensedstart
...
Unlicensedend

See Forum:CT:Non-canon Legends content

Spoiler sections

Example:

upcoming media title
...
...
Endspoiler

Stub

Example (for a stub about a creature):

Creature-stub

Character articles

Character articles

Character Articles

Character articles are to be organized using the following sections. Each of these sections may be subsectioned as necessary.
  1. Biography provides an account of the notable events in the character's life. The level of detail in this section is up to the individual author. However, a middle ground between succinct and lengthy is generally preferable. It is generally expected that this section will be divided into subsections on lengthy articles, though the appropriate sectioning of this is left to the author.
  2. Personality and traits describes personality traits evident in the source material and how these influence the character's behavior. Examples should be given where possible.
  3. Skills and abilities or Powers and abilities for Force-sensitive characters is intended to show any notable abilities possessed by the character. This section is particularly appropriate for Force-sensitive characters and can include any Force powers for which the character demonstrates an aptitude.
  4. Equipment can be used to give a brief description of any notable ships, weapons, or other equipment associated with the character.
Each of these sections may be further subdivided as appropriate.

Droid character articles

Droid Character Articles

Droid character articles are to be organized using the following sections. Each of these sections may be subsectioned as necessary.
  1. Biography provides an account of the notable events in the droid character's career. The level of detail in this section is up to the individual author. However, a middle ground between succinct and lengthy is generally preferable. It is generally expected that this section will be divided into subsections on lengthy articles, though the appropriate sectioning of this is left to the author.
  2. Characteristics describes personality traits evident in the source material and how these influence the droid character's behavior. Examples should be given where possible. Specific programming abilities and physical technical specifications are described here as well, subdivided as necessary.
  3. Equipment can be used to give a brief description of any notable ships or external weapons and equipment associated with the droid character.
Each of these sections may be further subdivided as appropriate.

Planet and moon articles

Planet Articles

Planet articles are to be organized using the following sections. Each of these sections may be subsectioned as necessary.

  1. Description will include any information on the characteristics of the planet itself, such as its location, its geological trends, its climate and ecosystem, and native vegetation. Also, any non-sentient fauna is to be described here. The key is to give a general overview of the planet and its characteristics.
    • Note: When a planet has particularly notable flora and fauna, an individual section can be created for such.
  2. History will cover all notable points in the planet's history. Individual periods and major events can receive subsections.
    • Note: Planet articles will not document chronological territorial affiliations unless the planet, moon, etc. is explicitly identified on a map as belonging to a given territory. For example, The Essential Atlas and The Essential Guide to Warfare document the many shifting territorial boundaries throughout Star Wars history on galactic maps. Unless a planet is explicitly identified on one of these maps as belonging to a territory, such as the Imperial Remnant or Darth Krayt's Galactic Empire, do not list the territory among the planet's affiliations in the article's infobox or body.
  3. Inhabitants includes a description of the planet's native or resident sentient species (where applicable) and any other notable inhabitants.
    • Note: If the planetary government is notably unique or of particular import, an individual section on it may be added. Furthermore, if the economy of the planet plays a significant role, it can be given its own section. Planetary culture and religion, apart from species culture, may also play a large role, and could then receive a section of its own, as well.
  4. Locations is set aside for notable specific locations on the planet's surface or in orbit, such as cities, bases, geological formations, and orbital facilities.

Each of these four sections may be further subdivided as appropriate. Note: if anything in particular is of overwhelming significance concerning the planet, or a preponderance of information is available, a section of its own can be created.

Starship and vehicle class articles

Starship and Vehicle Class Articles

Starship and vehicle class articles are to be organized using the following sections. Each of these sections may be subsectioned as necessary.

  1. Characteristics includes any descriptive information about the class, as well as any statistical information provided.
  2. Role encompasses the duties the vessel or vehicle type was designed and/or used for. Strengths and weaknesses in application are laid out here, as well.
  3. History covers the known operational history of the class, arranged in chronological order. Ideally, all appearances of the type in canon are described here.

Each of these three sections may be further subdivided as appropriate. Note: if anything in particular is of overwhelming significance concerning the class, or a preponderance of information is available, a section of its own can be created.

Individual Starship and Vehicle Articles

Individual starship and vehicle articles are to be organized using the following sections. Each of these sections may be subsectioned as necessary.

  1. Description contains all the details of the design of the ship or vehicle.
  2. History chronicles the known history of the craft in chronological order. Ideally, all appearances of the type in canon are described here.
  3. Commanders and crew (or a similar title such as Owners and operators) provides brief summaries of any individuals of particular import that owned, commanded, or crewed the vessel or vehicle.

Each of these three sections may be further subdivided as appropriate. Note: if anything in particular is of overwhelming significance concerning the ship or vehicle, or a preponderance of information is available, a section of its own can be created.

Species articles

Sentient species articles

Sentient Species Articles

Sentient species articles are to be organized using the following sections. Each of these sections may be subsectioned as necessary.
  1. Biology and appearance deals with the physical characteristics of the species. This includes descriptions of both their physical, instinctual and mental abilities, with particular emphasis on unique factors.
  2. Society and culture deals with the sociological organization of the species, including such features as language, temperament, and family and societal structures.
  3. History covers the major historical events of the species on its homeworld. This includes such events as wars, discovery by the galactic community, and other important epochs.
  4. [Species] in the galaxy provides an overview of the species' involvement in the galactic community outside of its homeworld, with particular emphasis on species trends and notable individuals. Depending on the available information, this section in particular may be incorporated into the earlier sections.
Each of these four sections may be further subdivided as appropriate.

Non-sentient and semi-sentient species articles

Non-Sentient and Semi-Sentient Species Articles

Non-sentient and semi-sentient species articles are to be organized using the following sections. Each of these sections may be subsectioned as necessary.
  1. Biology and appearance deals with the physical characteristics of the species. This includes descriptions of both their physical, instinctual and mental abilities, with particular emphasis on unique factors.
  2. Behavior (and intelligence) deals with the behavior and organization of the species, including such features as temperament along with societal, relational, reproductive and habitual characteristics. Any discussion on potential sentience or semi-sentience should be included in this section; Addition of "and intelligence" can be used in such articles to further explain the discussion.
  3. History covers the major historical events of the species on its homeworld. This includes such events as wars, discovery by the galactic community, and other important epochs.
  4. [Species] in the galaxy provides an overview of the species' involvement in the galactic community outside of its homeworld, with particular emphasis on species trends and appearances. Depending on the available information, this section in particular may be incorporated into the earlier sections.
Each of these four sections may be further subdivided as appropriate.

Battle, mission, and duel articles

Battle Articles

Battle articles are to be organized using the following sections. Each of these sections may be subsectioned as necessary.
  1. Prelude gives a brief description of the events leading up to the event as information is available. The level of detail in this section is up to the author, but should not take away from the article's subject of the actual event.
  2. The battle describes the event from all related source material. All information should be written from a neutral perspective, with none of the narrative focusing exclusively on the perspective of one side of the conflict. Alternatively, this section can be renamed to more appropriately reflect on the article's name.
  3. Aftermath can be used for any information related to the event that took place after its conclusion as it is available. As with the Prelude, however, the level of detail should not take away from the article's subject, which is the event itself.
Each of these sections may be further subdivided as appropriate. Note: if something else of significance concerning the event is relevant, a section of its own can be created.

Force power articles

Force Power Articles

Force power articles are to be organized using the following sections. Each of these sections may be subsectioned as necessary.
  1. Description gives a detailed description on what the power is and does.
  2. Applications describes how and why the power is used.
  3. Users details the specific instances of the power's use, and by whom.
Each of these sections may be further subdivided as appropriate. Note: if something else of significance concerning the Force power is relevant, a section of its own can be created.

Weapons, armor, technology, and equipment articles

Weapons, Armor, Technology, and Equipment Articles

Weapons, armor, technology, and equipment articles are to be organized using the following sections. Each of these sections may be subsectioned as necessary.
  1. Description will include any information on the characteristics of the item, such as design, utilization, and variants.
  2. History covers the known use of the item, arranged in chronological order. Ideally, all appearances of the item in canon are described here. Also included are users of the item, detailing the specific instances of the item's use, and by whom.
Each of these sections may be further subdivided as appropriate. Note: if something else of significance concerning the item is relevant, a section of its own can be created.
See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/July 25, 2020

Behind the scenes (notice the capitalization)

The "Behind the scenes" section (notice the capitalization) details the development of an in-universe subject from a real-world, out-of-universe perspective. This section may discuss a number of varying topics, including but not limited to a subject's origin, actor portrayal information, significant additions made to a subject's in-universe continuity, and storyline contradictions affecting a subject's in-universe continuity. The following is a more detailed list of potential "Behind the scenes" topics:

  • Origin of subject: In what Star Wars project did the subject first appear or was first mentioned, first pictured, or first named? Was the subject named after a real-world person or based upon a real-world subject or event? For film articles, detail a subject's real-world filming location.
  • Portrayal information: For character articles, detail which actor(s)/actress(es) portrayed the subject in films, television series, video games, radio dramatizations, etc.
  • Canon development: Chronicle a subject's development through Star Wars continuity in different source material. Discuss any significant changes made to a subject, including retcon information. For example, Boba Fett's Legends continuity was heavily retconned with the release of Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones. How did this change in his character's background affect previously released stories?
  • Contradictions: Detail any significant contradictions affecting a subject's continuity. Were any stories rendered non-canon by contradictory higher canon sources?
  • Authorial intent: Authors occasionally release statements outside of their published stories to detail information they intended to convey in their projects without necessarily being spelled out in a given source.

Publication dates

All articles shall document the real-world publication date(s) of the source(s) in which the article subject was first released, named, and/or pictured. A full date (example: January 1, 2020) should generally be provided for sources that are part of a series, while only the year should be provided for standalone sources and sources that are part of a longer-running series, such as a book trilogy or video-game series.

This means that films, novels, video games, reference books, card sets, and roleplaying or tabletop game products should only provide a publication year, while comic-book issues, television episodes, and magazine issues should provide a full date. The exception to this rule is when two sources are being discussed in tandem. In such a case, the month and/or full date may be provided as necessary, particularly if both sources were released in the same year.

Non-canon material

  • For Legends articles, material that Lucasfilm declared to be non-canon within the Legends continuity, including Infinities stories, certain cut content, and material irreconcilably contradicted by higher canon sources, will be covered exclusively in the "Behind the scenes" section. Cut content from Star Wars Legends sources that was not referenced in other source material was considered non-canon. The only exception to cut content are the deleted scenes of the six films of the Star Wars original trilogy and prequel trilogy. According to Leland Chee, deleted film scenes that were publicly released were G-canon in the Legends continuity "unless they conflict with something else seen in the films or if the reasoning behind deleting the scene keeps it from being continuity."
  • The "Behind the scenes" section need not document any content from Star Wars "parody" projects (examples: Family Guy: "Blue Harvest," Phineas and Ferb: Star Wars, and Robot Chicken: Star Wars) unless there is a specific referential need.
See Forum:CT:Non-canon Legends content, Wookieepedia:Mofferences/September 10, 2016

Appearances

Articles on topics within a specific continuity should only list appearances that are fall under that specific continuity. For example, the Canon version of the Jedi Order article should not list issues of Star Wars: Republic or the video game Star Wars: The Old Republic, and the Legends version of the Anakin Skywalker article should not list Tarkin or Lords of the Sith.

See Forum:CT:MOS and LG updates

Wookieepedia treats the film novelizations and junior film novelizations of the Star Wars original trilogy and prequel trilogy and the Star Wars: The Clone Wars film novelization as non-canon Legends material. Therefore, Canon articles will not list these novelizations within the Appearances section.

See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/June 29, 2014
  • Bulleted list of films, novels, comics, cartoons, roleplaying adventures, and computer games that the subject has appeared in
  • These are de facto references or sources, but they are listed separately because they are in-universe
  • Includes even the smallest mentions in dialogue, narration, or visual appearance
  • Should be sorted in order of in-universe chronology
  • For novels, make reference to the actual book, not the trilogy.
  • Comic books will be listed strictly by individual issue. Do not list comic story arcs, even if a subject appears in every issue of the arc.
  • Format: name of title only, e.g.:

Audiobooks

  1. When multiple audiobook editions of a single story are listed, differentiate between editions by specifying the audiobook's publisher within C:
  2. When a single audiobook edition of a story is listed, the publisher shall only be specified if the listed edition is not the audiobook's mass-market edition, primarily from publishers Random House Audio and Bantam Doubleday Dell Audio Publishing:
See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/July 25, 2020

Template usage

The ID template may be used to denote when an appearance uses an alternate name for a subject.

  • Common usage examples include:
    • Misspellings (example: (as Dack Ralter))
    • Indirect appearances (example: (Indirect appearance only) (as snowspeeder))
    • Call signs used in conjunction with Imo (example: (Indirect mention only) (as Rogue Eleven))
    • Ambiguous proper-noun references (example: Galaxy Guide 2: Yavin and Bespin refers to Olys Corellisi using the phrase "from the Corellian"; thus, (as Corellian))
  • ID may not be used:
    • If the subject is referred to by the actual Wookieepedia article title or an abbreviation, alternate capitalization, nickname, or shortened version of its name (example: Jek Tono Porkins vs. Jek Porkins)
    • For names already presented in the article using
    • On articles with conjectural titles
    • For general phrases and terms (examples: (as Rebel soldier) for a named character; (as attack on Hoth) for Battle of Hoth)

Note: C may not be used in substitution of ID or to circumvent the listed usage rules.

See Forum:CT:Template:ID usage

Non-canon appearances

An article subject's non-canon appearances will be listed in a subsection of the Appearances section titled "Non-canon appearances." This subsection will list non-canon appearances in in-universe chronological order, regardless of any relationship between stories, or lack thereof (example: LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga shares no connection with Star Wars: Tag & Bink, but they are listed together nonetheless).

This section will not list Star Wars "parody" projects that were created entirely or primarily outside of Lucasfilm's purview, such as Family Guy: "Blue Harvest," Phineas and Ferb: Star Wars, and Robot Chicken: Star Wars.

See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/September 10, 2016

Mediacat

In the instance two or more images and/or sound files on Wookieepedia feature the article's subject, corresponding categories must be created. These must be linked to via the Mediacat template, which ideally shall be placed immediately below the title of the "Appearances" section (or the "Sources" section in the absence of an "Appearances" section) of the respective article. If the template interferes with the presentation of media titles in the aforementioned sections, it shall be placed immediately below the subsequent section of the article ("Sources" or, ultimately, "Notes and references").

See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/March 7, 2020, Wookieepedia:Mofferences/July 25, 2020

Sources

The Sources section is a bulleted list of officially-licensed Star Wars reference material typically presented from a non-narrative, "out-of-universe" perspective. Common examples include West End Games and Wizards of the Coast sourcebooks (ex: Shadows of the Empire Sourcebook, The Clone Wars Campaign Guide), reference books (ex: The New Essential Chronology, The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia), Star Wars Insider articles, StarWars.com encyclopedic entries (ex: Databank, Encyclopedia, and New Databank), and other official non-fiction sources. Note, however, that while the Sources list includes items that are published as real-world canon reference material, many of these sources are nonetheless written as though by an "in-universe" author, such as historian Voren Na'al.

General rules

  • The Sources list is ordered chronologically by real-world publication date
    • List items according to the publisher's officially announced American release date, even though sources frequently hit the open market earlier than their announced release dates. Items may be listed by foreign release dates if there is a considerable gap between the subsequent American release date, such as several weeks or months, or if no American release date exists.
    • If only an item's publication month and/or year are known, place that item at the end of the month or year. Example: If Source A was published on March 15, 2005 and Source B's publication date is only known as March 2005, list Source A first.
      • However, if an item with only a known publication month and/or year is confirmed to be released by another source, place the first item at the date that the second source was released. Example: If Source A was published in December 2018, but Source B was published on December 15, 2018 and includes confirmation that Source A was released, then list Source A as if its publication date was December 15, 2018 and before Source B.
  • Listed items include even the smallest mentions of given subjects
  • Listed items are italicized by default, except where differentiated in citation templates
  • Star Wars Blog posts are only listed in the Sources section if they contain unique canonical information. Other Blog posts may be listed in the "External links" section as appropriate.
  • Beginning with Star Wars Insider 150, non-fiction Insider articles are divided among Canon and Legends articles:
    • Non-fiction Insider articles that mention subjects that remain canon or have been re-canonized in the new canon will be listed in Canon articles' Sources lists
    • Non-fiction Insider articles that mention subjects by their Legends names that have not been re-canonized will be listed in Legends articles' Sources lists until such a time that the subject is re-canonized, at which point all subsequent Insider mentions will be listed within a subject's Canon article. Previous Insider mentions in a Legends Sources list will not be moved to a subject's Canon Sources list.
    • Non-fiction Insider articles that mention subjects that remain canon or have been re-canonized may still be listed in Legends articles' Sources lists if the mention exclusively pertains to a subject's Legends history. For example, the Star Wars Insider 150 article Authors of the Expanded Universe mentions the planet Onderon in respect to its history in the Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi Legends series. Although Onderon remains part of the new canon, its Tales of the Jedi history is exclusively Legends; therefore, that Insider article is to be listed in Onderon's Legends Sources list.
    • If a non-fiction Insider article mentions a subject from both Canon and Legends perspectives, that Insider article is to be listed in both the subject's Canon and Legends Sources lists

Template usage

The Sources list identifies certain continuity developments for a given subject, such as when a subject was first mentioned in canon, first identified by name, or first pictured. The following templates are used for this purpose: (First mentioned), (First identified as [Subject name]), and (First pictured). Note the following specifics for determining when to use these templates:

  • Sources templates work in conjunction with Appearances list templates
  • If an article uses both (First appearance) and (First mentioned), that means the "mention" came first. An article will not use (First mentioned) if the "appearance" came first.
  • may be used to specify that a subject's first mention was featured in multiple sources simultaneously (example: (First mentioned, simultaneous with Star Wars: The Force Awakens: The Visual Dictionary)). When using this template to specify multiple simultaneous items, the template shall only be listed once and on the first applicable item in the Sources list. See Afterburner#Sources as an example.
  • (First identified as [Subject name]) and (First pictured) are primarily used if a subject was first identified by name or pictured in a Sources list item subsequent to the subject's first appearance. For example, Gial Ackbar's first name was revealed in The Essential Guide to Warfare subsequent to the character's appearance in Return of the Jedi. Therefore, his Sources list is formatted like so: *The Essential Guide to Warfare (First identified as Gial)

The (Mentioned only) tag may not be used in the Sources list, as all Sources list items are "mentioned only" by default. The (Indirect mention only) tag may be used, however. Additionally, items in the Sources list typically should never use the (First appearance) tag, which is primarily used in the Appearances list. Other templates may be used as necessary to denote certain specifics, such as C (for manual notation), (Picture only), (Quote only), (Cover only), (In flashback(s)), and (Appears in hologram). See a full list of these templates here.

The ID template may be used to denote when a source uses an alternate name for a subject.

Canon

The following section identifies additional specific rules for Canon articles.

Legends

The following section identifies additional specific rules for Legends articles.

Non-canon sources

An article subject's non-canon sources will be listed in a subsection of the Sources section titled "Non-canon sources." This subsection will list non-canon sources chronologically by real-world publication date.

See Forum:CT:Modernizing Layout Guide Sources section, Forum:CT:Star Wars Blog, Wookieepedia:Mofferences/September 10, 2016, Wookieepedia:Mofferences/January 6, 2019, Forum:CT:Template:ID usage

Succession box

Succession boxes serve two purposes: to list the time period for which an individual held a certain post/title, and to provide links to the next known predecessor and/or successor. Due to the tendency of contributors to insert speculation and fanon into succession boxes, part of the Wookieepedia community dislikes them. To avoid issues and disputes, it is best to follow these "do nots":

  • Do not insert succession boxes for titles that were unique to a certain individual and, therefore, result in no predecessors or successors. The same applies if the individual is the only known holder of the title.
  • Do not insert succession boxes if the individual's position in the succession sequence is unclear. This applies, for instance, for such out-of-chronology Dark Lords of the Sith as Tulak Hord and Darth Andeddu.
  • Do not insert succession boxes for something that is not a proper title. For example, a succession box for Palpatine where the title is "Secret de facto leader of the Separatists" (this is a real precedent on Wookieepedia) is most likely to be deleted.

All succession boxes should be contained within two templates: Start box and End box. This ensures that there are no line breaks within succession boxes. Within the Succession box, there are six possible fields to insert information, all of which must be sourced:

  • title: This field is for the title of the succession box. It is required.
  • years: This field is for the years the position was held or the events occurred. Please limit this to one tenure, and repeat succession boxes as necessary. This field is also required.
  • before: This field is for the nearest known predecessor. See below for conditions.
  • before-years: This field is for the years of the nearest known predecessor.
  • after: This field is for the nearest known successor. See below for conditions.
  • after-years: This field is for the years of the nearest known successor.

If the individual was the first (last) person to bear a certain title, the "before" input ("after" input) should list "None" without any punctuation. If there are no known predecessors/successors, the corresponding fields should be left blank. However, if there are some known predecessors/successors, the section should read "Eventually <name of the chronologically nearest individual>". (Example: Darth Revan's immediate predecessor as Dark Lord of the Sith is unknown; therefore, the succession box reads "Eventually Exar Kun".)

In contrast, "Unknown" should not be used in the dates of succession boxes. (Example: "Unknown–0 ABY" should only be "—0 ABY.") See Wookieepedia:Manual of Style/Proper use of the dash for more information.

Notes and references

Relevant policy: Wookieepedia:Sourcing
  • List of sources for information in the "Behind the scenes" section.
  • Items are added to the list by placing after the information tidbit in question.
  • To get the references to show up in this section, use the Reflist template.
  • Reference lists may not be multi-columned. This feature has been removed from Reflist.
See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/August 30, 2019
  • References will only use periods at the end of the citation if the citation is a complete sentence. References that are not complete sentences will not use periods.
See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/February 12, 2012
  • As a general rule, Wookieepedia recommends reserving scroll boxes for reference lists to articles that employ no less than forty to fifty individual references. However, this is by no means a hard figure, and final decisions for the use of scroll boxes should be determined by what best suits each individual article.
    • The standard scroll box size may be enlarged for certain articles, but this should be done only in rare cases for presentation purposes. Requests to do so should be made on the article's talk page or article review pages.
See Wookieepedia:Mofferences/November 11, 2012

External links

The External links section is a bulleted list of out-of-universe links from websites outside of Wookieepedia. These links are commonly unlicensed and/or unofficial sources of information, such as product pages, fan websites, and Wikipedia articles.

  • The section is called "External links," even if the article only has one external link
  • For Wikipedia articles, use the WP template (example: Star Wars gives you: WPfavicon Star Wars on Wikipedia)
  • Star Wars Blog posts may be listed in the External links as necessary to supplement an article's coverage, but restrict Blog listings to posts of critical relevance. Any Blog post that is cited in the course of the article must be listed in the External links if not already listed in the Sources section.
  • Do not list StarWars.com Databank or Encyclopedia entries here; those belong in the Sources section
See Forum:CT:Star Wars Blog, Wookieepedia:Mofferences/September 10, 2016

Interwiki links

  • Links to Star Wars wikis in other languages
  • Interwiki links should be listed in the Interlang template placed before an article's categories. The "xxFA=" operator will indicate that an article has reached "featured" or equivalent status on its host wiki.

Category

  • Every article must have all applicable categories.
  • Categories should be listed in alphabetical order.
  • MediaWiki allows use of the DEFAULTSORT magic word to eliminate unnecessary coding while still achieving the desired result of categorizing articles by last name (ie, one need not use ; use the below method)

  • Articles beginning with an article ("a," "an," or "the") should be categorized by the first significant word; for example, .
  • Articles placed in categories should not also be placed in that category's parent category; for example, articles in Category:Aquatic sentient species should not also be placed in Category:Sentient species.
  • RelatedCategories is used to include a category in the category listing at the bottom of an article without actually including the article in that category. For example,

can be included at the bottom of Atrivis sector. The sector is neither a planet nor a system, but including links to the two categories helps readers find related content. RelatedCategories should be placed below the actual categories.

See Forum:CT:Layout Guide change for categories, Wookieepedia:Mofferences/September 10, 2016

Miscellaneous

  • No artificial white spaces are to be added to mainspace articles.
