"To those who act as agents of chaos, I say this: I stand resolute and unyielding. And if you strike my voice down, know that a chorus of thousands shall rise up in its place, for you have no dominion over the righteous. We are the defenders of truth."
―Padmé Amidala[1]

WookieeProject: Democracy is a WookieeProject focusing on all things related to democracy in Star Wars and beyond. We aim to improve Wookieepedia's coverage of in-universe politics, encompassing the people and ideas involved as well as the events and movements they inspire or respond to. From there, the project also gives a home to articles with the theme of democratic organizations and societies across both canon and Legends continuities, including states such as the Galactic Republic, the New Republic, and the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances and resistance movements such as the Alliance to Restore the Republic and the Resistance.

This project also aims to research and document the real-world contexts behind Star Wars, particularly in the "Behind the scenes" sections of in-universe article topics that have been inspired by political and historical democracy-related developments.

Goals and scope[]

"The whole point of the movies, the underlying element that makes the movies work, is that you, whether you go backwards or forwards, you start out in a democracy, and democracy turns into a dictatorship, and then the rebels make it back into a democracy. That's one of the uber-issues that everyone is dealing with."
―George Lucas, in 2005[2]

What is democracy? Star Wars sources often do not define or explicitly state their terms, but it is evident that the representative systems, free and fair voting procedures, due process, and respect for rights in the Galactic Republic, the New Republic, and the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances across both the new canon and Legends continuities make them democratic states in-universe.

Practice and procedure are paramount, so while not every Republic or Alliance building, starship, or citizen may fall under this project's scope, articles with content focusing on the maintaining of democracy and/or defense of democratic values do qualify—such as soldiers loyal to the Republic, like Fideltin Rusk, and their senators, including Supreme Chancellors ranging from Tarsus Valorum to Mon Mothma, as well as Republic laws, governmental organizations, parties, and caucuses; also, democratic revolutionary movements such as the Alliance to Restore the Republic and Resistance with their personnel and key assets, such as the ship Independence; and even the Bakuran Malinza Thanas who led local protests against the New Republic and Galactic Alliance. Likewise, the project includes articles that address events in which democratic principles are articulated, such as the Great Galactic War with its Senate emergency defense session and the debates that arose in response to the Battle of Alderaan.

Democratic backsliding is a key theme of Star Wars, so this project also targets articles that discuss elements of democracy, such as the rule of law and freedom of expression, including legislatures and courts eroding under illiberal regimes such as the Separatist Senate and Imperial Senate. Not every act of rebellion may qualify under the scope of this project, but protests indicative of public opinion against authoritarian oppression and events that light the sparks of a rebel movement intended to oppose tyranny and restore democratic governance, like the Ghorman Massacre and the massacre at Terrina Square, are also of interest to this project.

In an age of political uncertainty worldwide, this project seeks to research and highlight the real-world contexts behind Star Wars in an accurate and nonpartisan manner. This may mostly involve expanding the "Behind the scenes" sections of in-universe articles like the Proclamation of the New Order and Declaration of Rebellion, both of which are topics inspired by real-world political histories of democracy and dictatorship. Additional research that may not neatly fit an encyclopedic entry on the wiki can be collated as essays on the Discussions forum. Contributors should strive to maintain accurate political science terminology (e.g. "government," "organization," and "state" are different things) while ensuring that writing is clear and plainly understandable for all readers.

Please do keep in mind that all content on the wiki should adhere to Wookieepedia policies of attribution and neutral point of view, and refrain from sharing partisan political opinions. We are here to document democracy (and also practice it, per Wookieepedia's Consensus policy) in a fictional franchise, so take it easy and, above all, have fun working together!

"To champion democracy is no brave thing. For eons, politicians have done so as naturally as they draw breath. To suggest there is a point beyond which democracy collapses on itself, yielding stagnation and eventually ruin? That demands a degree of political courage so rare as to border on the theoretical."
Tarsus Valorum, Official Record of the Ruusan Deliberations[3]
