Publisher's summary[]
A handful of Tatooine outlaws and a mountain full of Imperial weaponry are a deadly combination—deadly enough to make allies of X-wing Rogue Squadron and a troop of Imperial Special Forces! The hot desert sands really heat up in the explosive conclusion to Battleground: Tatooine, as Wedge and crew attempt to take back the galaxy, one planet at a time!
Plot summary[]
The members of Rogue Squadron that had gone to Ryloth return to Tatooine. The other Rogues are shocked to see Imperial troopers emerge from Winter's freighter, but Winter offers an explanation while they travel. Elsewhere on Tatooine, Captain Marl Semtin explains to Firith Olan that Imperial official Sate Pestage embezzled funds from an Imperial military operation to build a private retreat on Tatooine. After flying into a rock face that was actually a holographic cover, Semtin and Olan enter Eidolon Base, with the Eidolon cruiser supposedly housed on Tatooine being a fake. The base is stocked with art, wealth and weaponry, and Semtin explains that Lirin Banolt died after threatening to expose the base. Semtin offers for Olan to manage the base and become the de facto governor of Tatooine, which Olan accepts.
Rogue Squadron and the defected Imperials fly to Eidolon Base and watch TIE Interceptors fly out of the holographic mountainside. The defectors, led by Sixtus Quin, storm the base on foot. Olan, who had deployed his forces for an aerial attack, panics; not wanting to risk Olan falling into Alliance hands, Semtin stabs him. Olan crawls out of the holographic wall, falling to the ground to be met by Bib Fortuna's droid-walker.
In the air, Rogue Squadron battles the TIEs. Tycho Celchu's X-Wing is hit, and despite Winter's pleas, he "goes out with a bang", much to Winter's shock. Against Wedge Antille's orders, Elscol Loro flies out of atmosphere to attack the orbiting Star Destroyer Harrow, entering its docking bay and causing a catastrophic decompression by destroying its containment field. Plourr Ilo crash-lands on the surface and is rescued by Kapp Dendo. Quin finds Semtin, who offers to make Quin rich, but is killed by Quin, who is insulted by his lack of honor. With the last TIEs destroyed and the base secured, the Rogues emerge victorious.
Back at base, Antilles consoles Winter concerning Celchu, revealing that "going out with a bang" is code for ejecting and letting the X-Wing's R2 unit go for a suicide run. At Huff Darklighter's estate, the Rogues celebrate and Winter finds Celchu, giving him the kiss she promised him when they first arrived on Tatooine. Antilles offers Elscol Loro a position as leader of Tatooine's government-backed liberation force, armed by the captured Imperial weaponry; Loro gratefully accepts.
At Jabba's palace, Fortuna, whose brain has been placed in Olan's body by the B'omarr monks, awakes fully recovered. Fortuna expresses his happiness at being organic again and continuing to work with Olan, whose brain was placed in a walker-droid of its own, and declares that the name of Bib Fortuna will once again ring proudly throughout the galaxy.
