X-Wing Rogue Squadron 18 was the eighteenth issue in the Star Wars: X-Wing Rogue Squadron series of comics. It was released on May 7, 1997 by Dark Horse Comics.

Publisher's summary[]

It should have been a simple mission for the men and women of Rogue Squadron—an easy search-and-rescue for a group of Bothan castaways forced down on Malrev IV. But when they got to the backwater planet, the Rogues found themselves first attacked by the Irrukiine, a doglike aboriginal race, and then by the Bothans themselves. There's some strange kind of hoodoo going down on Malrev 4—this planet promotes madness and deceit, and not even the Rogues are immune!

Plot summary[]

Rogue Squadron and the Bothan passengers of the Starfaring battle the irrukiine. They are rescued by Nrin, whose perceived cowardice is revealed to be a plan to get his X-Wing and use it against the irrukiine. Following the battle, Ibitsam is profusely apologetic to Nrin. Dllr is recovering from the overpowering wave of music he heard during the battle.

Meanwhile, back at the temple, Cartariun laments to Wedge the headache Rogue Squadron has given him. He shows Wedge his fearsome armaments, before explaining how the temple was used by Emperor Palpatine as a focal point of Sith magic and how, following the Empire's abandonment of the temple, Cartariun used the magic to control the irrukiine in much the same way he had used it to heal Wedge following his crash landing. Cartariun attempts to convince Wedge to join him, promising power, but when Wedge refuses, Cartariun instead decides he will use him as bait for the rest of Rogue Squadron, and hopes to find his new disciple amongst them.

Asleep on the Starfaring, Ibitsam has a dream of Mon Cala. She dreams of Nrin speaking in the street to a crowd of fellow Quarren about the reckless spacefaring of the Mon Calamari. She later discusses the dream with Feylis, asserting the dream was impossible: the Mon Calamari had already been in space for decades before she had ever met Nrin. Feylis replies that the planet is making the whole squadron act weird, citing the amorous behaviour of Wes and Hobbie as an example, as well as the strange music Dllr hears.

Tycho leads the search party for Wedge. During the search, Herian reveals to him that she thinks the hyperdrive on the Starfaring was intentionally sabotaged by the Bothans, hinting at ulterior motives. Tycho reveals he has been having similar doubts himself and tells her to warn the rest of the squadron. Dllr exclaims excitedly to Nrin about how he not only can hear the music, but can see it as well.

One of the Bothans warns Girov of Rogue Squadron's suspicions as the search party arrives at the temple. Moments later, the irrukiine attack. Inside the temple, Wedge sees Cartariun is distracted by the fighting and makes his escape, intervening in the battle just as the search party begins to make its retreat.

Following the battle, Dllr finds himself inside the temple, where he encounters Cartariun. Cartariun assures him he will heal his wounds and encourages the Sullustan to listen to the music.
