"The New Republic is alive and well!"
―Zaina — 20?cb=20250116042720 ▶️ (file info)[1]

Zaina was a human veteran of the Rebel Alliance and a member of the New Republic[1] following the fall of the Galactic Empire.[3] She wielded a blaster pistol and possessed cybernetic legs.[1] She participated in the Hunters of the Outer Rim tournament on the planet Vespaara.[1] Her fellow Hunters considered the story of her civilian life before coming to Vespaara embarrassing, something for which they teased her often.[4]

Biography[]

Early life and the Rebellion[]

Zaina joined the Alliance to Restore the Republic to fight against the tyranny and reign of the Galactic Empire,[1] becoming a hero amongst the rebellion during her service.[5] Throughout the Galactic Civil War, she often watched replays of Huttball, which kept her going. During the Battle of Endor, she did not participate, though she had heard stories about the alliance between Ewoks and the Rebellion.[1] Following the victory of the Rebel Alliance, she became a veteran, who then continued to serve under the nascent New Republic.[6]

Hunters of the Outer Rim[]

Around 9 ABY,[7] when Rieve first joined the Hunters of the Outer Rim roster, Zaina worked to befriend the newcomer. She, Imara Vex, and Grozz joined Rieve at the Oasis Cantina one evening to listen to a gonkrock concert. Zaina herself preferred older styles of music, such as droidpop and electro-twang. Nevertheless, she thoroughly enjoyed herself and was surprised when Rieve joined the gonkrock band onstage to perform a song. Zaina and Imara Vex later invited Rieve to other outings, but in those early days she turned them down. When a mysterious man began appearing in the Grand Arena, Zaina was the first individual to believe Rieve. She saw the man herself during a match, standing in the team entrance to the battlefield.[4]

Zaina considered the Hunters a family. She encouraged Rieve to not run from the support of their Hunter family, and eventually led her roster of Hunters to an underground fighting ring where she rescued Rieve from an Iktotchi male fighter by shooting him with her blaster. After protecting the arena from the mysterious man's goons, she grew closer to Rieve. She, Imara Vex, and Grozz frequently got Rieve to join them for evenings of entertainment at the Oasis Cantina.[4]

Sometime later, Grozz handcrafted a doll in the likeness of fellow Hunter Aran Tal, as a gift for the warrior. Grozz and Zaina placed the wrapped present in Tal's dressing room, but, assuming a trap, the Mandalorian incinerated the gift. Zaina explained that Grozz was disappointed, but not mad.[8]

Grozz told Zaina that he had been receiving cryptic, threatening messages on the HoloNet from an old enemy who was coming to find him. The enemy in question would be revealed to be K-A0S, a KX-series security droid and the Arena's newest Hunter.[9] As the feud between K-A05 and Grozz intensified, Boz Vega hosted the Wookiee in an interview, translated by Zaina. Grozz was reluctant to comment on K-A0S, so the topic turned to Huttball. Grozz spoke passionately, commenting that the importance of teammates in both Huttball and Hunters of the Outer Rim, leaving Zaina touched. When Vega brought up a rumor that Grozz pulled off K-A0S's arms because she stole his favorite Huttball club, Grozz grew annoyed and stormed off through a hole in the door that K-A05 had blasted earlier. Zaina apologized to Boz on behalf of Grozz.[10]

Balada teased a new Hunter coming to the Arena. As usual, she refused to divulge many details before the official reveal, although she did reveal that while while Imperial loyalist Sentinel would be displeased about the latest addition to the roster, Zaina would not be.[11] The Hunter in question would turn out to be Pilbush, and Ewok with a deep reverence for the Rebel Alliance. After losing a Clash with Sentinel, Pilbush continued training with Zaina and her other friends. Pilbush was irritated by Sentinel's continued remarks, but Zaina eventually convinced her to ignore him.[12]

Personality and traits[]

"A leader may carry a blaster, but diplomacy is their first weapon of choice."
―Zaina[1]

Zaina was a human with black hair, brown eyes, and dark skin. She had small triangular design tattoos underneath her eyes. Being a veteran of the Rebel Alliance, Zaina had a strong sense of leadership, bravery, and respect. She also admired the work of the senator of the planet Naboo, Padmé Amidala, wishing that she could meet the senator. Zaina also respected the Ghost and looked up to its pilot, General Hera Syndulla.[1]

At least in her Arena persona, Zaina considered Sentinel to be her archnemesis due to his ostensible loyalty to the Empire. She claimed his zeal ignites her own for the dream of the New Republic.[1]

Equipment[]

Zaina wore a blue vest with the Rebel Alliance starbird crest on it and a tan tunic underneath. She used the Veteran Blaster, a modified DL-44 heavy blaster pistol, as her primary weapon. Zaina also had sticky bombs and bacta bombs to support her allies.[1]

Zaina is a playable character in[1] the 2024 competitive combat game Star Wars: Hunters, published by Zynga and Lucasfilm Games.[3] She is considered a level-two difficulty Support-class Hunter. She has two active abilities. Her first, Bacta Bomb, is thrown at her feet, releasing a burst of healing to nearby allies. Her other active ability is the Dodge Roll, allowing her to avoid incoming fire and move more quickly. It has two charges and resets weapon overheat when activated. Zaina has a passive ability called Combat Medic, which increases the healing effect of her bacta bombs when an ally is at low health. Zaina's Ultimate is Rallying Cry, in which she plants a flag and lets out a defiant yell. This gives allies in range a large amount of temporary health.[1]

  7. Hunters: Battle for the Arena takes place after the fall of the Galactic Empire, which Star Wars: Galactic Atlas dates to 5 ABY. In the story, Rieve is around 21 years old, but in a flashback, which takes place during the Imperial Era, she is 16 years old. So the novel cannot take place more than four-five years after the Fall of the Empire. As it also takes place after Aran Tal joined the Hunters of the Outer Rim, which Star Wars: Timelines dates to 9 ABY, the book must be set around that year.
